Areli
the flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly

It had been one of the worst nights of her young life, and as the sun began to peek over the horizon, Areli had a suspicion that it would become one of the worst mornings as well. Whimpering and exhausted, she had followed Mauja back to the Edge with the ever-suspicious Galiel in tow. Even now, the other girl lingered at the fringe of the group, looking sideways at the large stallion with decidedly shifty eyes—not that Areli paid this much mind, for she was too busy cringing and sniffling. Her sobs had quieted long ago when her throat had grown hoarse from wailing. Now only pained moans parted her lips as each boil burst and spattered the forest floor with the distasteful combination of pus and blood. And water too, thanks to Mauja’s magic, which she unwittingly succumbed to. It was good that he hadn’t asked her, for fearing the pain she would have surely declined. She trusted him to help her, but she was not immune to the fearful stubbornness of children who refuse healing antiseptic in dreaded anticipation of its sting.

Even when they crossed into the Edge, Areli’s spirits remained low. Though she had often imagined coming home to her birthplace and playing amongst the tall trees once more, she hadn’t quite envisioned it like this. The familiar old scent of the pines comforted her slightly, but it did not ease the pain that enveloped her body. Head hanging, she didn’t have the inclination to do much reminiscing.

“Hey,” the sharp whisper cut into her hazy thoughts. “Sumzing doesn’t seem to be right…” Wearily, she turned her head back, lids heavy over her gold eyes as Galiel expressed her doubts about their escort in an undertone. The other filly might be worried, but Areli merely shook her head listlessly. “He said he would help,” she replied, keeping her voice low without bothering to whisper. “Besides, I know this place. We’ll be safe here,” she added. The dark filly hesitated slightly, not knowing how else to reassure her mistrustful new companion. But she didn’t have much of a chance anyway. Without warning, the stallion’s voice was suddenly ringing through the misty wood. “NYX!” he bellowed, startling Areli. Her neck shot up and she cast her gaze about wildly, looking for the cause of the commotion. And lo and behold, out of the fog came sweeping a unicorn mare of the same color.

She only took one look at Areli before her expression furrowed into concern. Though she questions what’s going on, the yearling leaves that for Mauja to explain. He had brought them here, after all.
