| Word of the battle had not taken long to spread throughout the lands drawing the attention of many warriors and tourists. The land that had appeared out of thin air, now if that wasn't strange he really didn't know what else was. It had taken days of begging mother for her to finally agree to letting him come out here now that the battle was behind them. She worried too much, he would be careful... when he remembered to be. New discoveries were exciting so she couldn't really blame him for forgetting to use his thinking cap on some occasions before blindly running into things. When would mother ever let him just have some fun without worrying about him all the time? He really needed to figure out where to find a new brother or sister so that mother could worry about them instead and give him a little slack. Wandering through the strange landscape the colt couldn't help but be amazed at all the strange plants and the odd giant scales that seemed to be everywhere. Rumors had said that the battle had been against something called a crocodile maybe these scales were front it. He had never seen such a creature before so all he had to go on was the many descriptions that seemed to change from one person to the next. Maybe there would be another crocodile around for him to see for himself he mused keeping his eyes peeled for anything resembling the creature he had heard about. Wading through the shallow waters the brindle colt gazed down expecting to see lots of those silver fish like he did in the ocean, only to be disappointed when nothing but sand greeted him. Why was there no life in this place? Had the crocodile eaten all the inhabitants or something? Pawing the ground when objects seemed to appear in the sand the boy found nothing but a couple boring rocks and scales. Fanning himself with his wings to cool off a little before continuing the colt tried to think of something fun he could do by himself to make things more interesting. Hide N Seek...no that needed more than one person. Finding none that he could play by himself he gave up deciding instead to go looking for one of the gods. Surely with the battle here someone had to be around somewhere and it would only make sense for it to be one of the Gods. Someday he wanted to meet them all and find out for himself what was going on around Helovia instead of always being the last to hear about things. Perhaps today was his lucky day... ----------------------------------------------------- Aeolus speaks |

E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" The heat was intense. Everywhere the air shimmered and swayed, weaving mirages and creating a sensation of being out at sea. Splashing water left her thin feathers stiff and bristly with salt. Thirst burned in her throat; the white filly had forgotten how long she had stood there, staring at the dark spot where the illusion of never-ending sky shattered. Sweat trickled down her neck and barrel in thin rivulets, like ice melting under harsh sunlight. She scratched absently at a chafe under the wing where the heavy bow rubbed her skin raw, and then continued to stare. Blinking made her eyes sting and burn too, but Erthë welcomed the pain. It was better than the numb state of disbelief she had been in for the past days, where all she could do was follow orders. Eat, sleep, go here, do this. Nothing mattered, because her mother was dead. There, alone, out on the wide stretched salt-panes. An impulse had made her take on the long journey south from the Basin, where her father now must be making the last arrangements to leave. They were moving, apparently, though she couldn't recall where or why. It didn't matter. As long as she could be with her father it was alright; he was everything she had now, all that was left. This god-forsaken land had taken it from her, and she didn't even have the courage to walk up to her mother's corpse and look at her one last time. Something, a flash of movement, made her turn her head in another direction. Someone was walking out there, in the shimmering haze. Squinting she tried to see who it was, but the light was too sharp; it gave her a blistering headache and rubbed the sensitive skin raw, making her nose flake and blister. Erthë thought she must look like one of the scaly lizards that sometimes darted about outside the Heart Caves. Ah. But that didn't matter either. "And all the pretty tulips would disappear And never disturb me again" @Aeolus - uuuh so sorry for the apathy; she might not be the most fun playmate around atm. ^^; @Random Event - because GLL and HFH >.<

Aeolus has contracted GLL.

E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" The figure came closer. It was distracting enough that her intense focus on the shimmering black dot on the horizon faded slightly. As a result, she only became more aware of her physical ailments. Bruises, aches, sores, the same accursed black pus that kept rattling in her lungs and clogging the airways. Shifting her weight the girl made sure not to place any burdens on the right leg; it had been weak and unresponsive ever since the Crocodile god had thrown her to the ground. It didn't hurt much anymore, but the joint just above the cloves was oddly weak, as though it didn't resist bending anymore. The resulting limp was not only irritating, it hindered her movements too; somehow she hoped it would mend on its own in time, but so far that didn't seem to be the case. Watching the flickering, shimmering figure approach from the corner of her eye, the girl adjusted the bow beneath her wing. Not even she could say why she insisted on carrying it around. It was a vile thing, made from the bones of the thing that killed her mother. The God that had created it had thrown it at Shadow's feet without sparing a second glance at the injured, dying mare, even though it was his mistakes that caused the whole incident. It was not a show of affection towards that flaming lord that made her carry this gift. No, it probably didn't even have any deeper meaning. Mother had said to take it, so Erthë took it, and she would not let go of it. Without having a use for it or even knowing how to make it work she lugged it around, tucked beneath a wing, waiting for... something. A reason to try it out, maybe, or a chance to get rid of it without feeling any guilt. Ah, it was hot. Her mouth felt dry, the longing for water and shelter was growing harder to resist. But her mother lay out there too, alone beneath the burning sun. If she couldn't endure this, how could she ever call herself the daughter of Shadow again? The figure had come close enough to make out now. It was a horse, a brindled colt with wings the color of the sun, and he looked thoroughly lost. She tried to ignore him, but he made it very hard to do by suddenly speaking. Questions... why was it that she couldn't help but answer them, once they were posed? "I do." She eyed him for a moment, then went back to staring at the spot on the horizon. The black figure had been joined by other, smaller shapes now. They skipped and flapped around the bigger silhouette, and with a jolt of fear and revulsion Erthë realized what they might be. Vultures. "No!" she hissed, pain and grief turning in a flash into blazing, white-hot rage. "And all the pretty tulips would disappear And never disturb me again" @Aeolus

E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" "Not you" she hissed rather impatiently, "them. Vultures. But they can't, not there, not to her!" Erthë made to move forwards and chase the stinking birds away, but froze in the midst of a step as fear clasped around her heart, cold and sharp like a dagger pierced into her heart. "It's my.... my mother." The reply came slow and lingering like an afterthought, but the pain in her voice was fresh, raw and tender. What would she see if she went over there? How long had the birds been there before she arrived? How many days and nights had passed since the Blackbird fell, since the battle ended and she had to leave and walk the long road home on her own? Would she even be able to recognize the face of her mother in the dead body, or would she see... something else? Oh, it was a painful thought. It was painful to do nothing too though, and the thought of those scavengers pecking at her mother was unbearable. With mounting despair she stared through the haze at the horrible scene, tears rising into the eyes until the world became a blur of light and color. When she couldn't stand it anymore the girl tore her gaze away and stared at the boy, expression a silent scream and her voice hoarse with sadness and pain and cold, fierce anger. "What should I do? I don't want them to peck her, but I c-can't go there." It was too far for voices to carry, and no rocks lay strewn on the ground to throw. While the simplest answer would be to rush at the birds Erthë couldn't bring herself to do it... and what ways were left to choose then? She didn't know, couldn't decide, her brain felt dead and numb. Even her thoughts had frozen, halted by this seemingly insurmountable problem. E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" If ever her irate expressions had been due to the presence of the boy, they eased into heartfelt gratitude at his ready offer to help. The relief was as evident on her pale face as the frosty sigh of relief that fogged in the hot air, and for the first time since her mother's passing, the little filly smiled. "Thank you!" she breathed as the boy rushed past her, his gait colored with purpose and excitement; she could forgive him that. Actually, she was ready to forgive him just about anything as long as he chased away those foul birds from her mother's remains. Logic told her it was a pointless thing to do; once they left the scavengers would simply return and continue their meal. However, logic wasn't what ruled her heart these days. Guilt, grief, love and passion, a young heart that beat fiercely for what was right; that was who she was, what she had turned into after everything that had happened. Her heart felt torn as she watched the stranger run in her place. Relief, oh yes, and gratitude; but wasn't there some envy too? He was able to do it so easily. Even though there was some initial hesitation where he almost stopped, the colt was soon busy stomping and flapping the wings, battling the sluggish vultures with a bravery she hadn't expected. Why couldn't she be as strong, as cool, even though it was her mother and her problem? Erthë forced herself to take a step forward, and another. It wouldn't do to let him do it all on his own, would it? Those were big birds, and though he did his best they hardly moved at all. At one point a few of them took to the sky, and she whooped gleefully, pirouetting on the spot in celebration. He had magic, and it worked! The flaring fires left her in a deep sense of awe and admiration, mingled of course with intense jealousy - if she'd had magic, maybe she would have been braver too! Then she noticed more birds arrive, more and more until finally the flock in the air was as big as the one on the ground. A deep sense of unease gripped her then; they were huge, their wingspans easily exceeding her own. One or two might not be much to worry about, but twenty or thirty at once? "Hey, watch out! Above, look above!" she called, sidestepping anxiously with ruffled feathers. Would he notice them, would he come back? Oh, she hoped he wouldn't get hurt, it would be awful if he did - it would be completely her fault, for being so weak. Wasn't it enough that one life had been wasted due to her folly - please, lady of wind and moon, protect him! "And all the pretty tulips would disappear And never disturb me again" @Aeolus

E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" She hadn't gone all the way up to the boy and the crumpled, decaying form of her mother. The feeble, hesitant steps had only brought her a few meters before she stopped again, sweating profusely despite the waves of cold dread that broke across her skin. Erthë wanted nothing more than to get over there and chase the birds herself, but she just... couldn't. It was her mother lying there, only the mare that had birthed her, nursed her, taught her everything she knew - and yet it wasn't, because Shadow was gone, and Erthë didn't want to see what happened to a body when the soul had left it. Not this body, not now. So she hovered there in the shimmering heat, watching the circling vultures with bated breath. "I don't know! Be careful!" she called back, but there was worry in her voice and the tail had curled into a stiff coil around a leg, a sorry attempt to contain her internal tension. Truth be told, she hadn't the slightest idea whether those foul birds would bother going after them or not. During the travels with Shadow they had seen them circle at times, and the black mare had told her what they were doing; riding the thermal winds while looking for something to eat, pecking the dead and dying in order to sate their hunger. But did they hunt live prey? And would two young horses, healthy and vigorous, be tempting when there was an already dead carcass nearby? At the very least, the flock of scavengers seemed annoyed by the interference. The kettle of vultures came closer and closer to the ground, a veritable cloud of stinking, flapping and squawking birds with sharp claws and lethal looking beaks. A small group of individuals descended towards the sun-winged colt, while another headed straight for herself. With a thrill of fright the girl ducked as one giant bird swooped over her head, so close that the draft of the wings whistled in her ears. With a startled shriek Erthë spread her own pearly wings and flapped violently, not even noticing that things kept hidden amidst the feathers fell clattering to the ground. Not until her eyes fell upon the ivory bow. It had not fallen at all - it was hovering, bobbing up and down level with her head, its carved limbs gleaming encouragingly in the sunlight. Was it... telling her to use it? But she didn't know how, had nothing to shoot away, and how was she to figure all that out when a bloody bird kept diving after her ears? It was pure accident that made her touch the string of the bow; a last minute dive forward pushed her up against the magical weapon, she brushed across the string and noticed a bright, cold light flare up for a fraction of a second. Aaah. So simple. Understanding flooded through her mind and without a second thought the filly reached for the bow, caught the string between her teeth and pulled, as hard as she could. Again the light flared up by the arrow rest, manifesting into an arrow of light, so pure and bright that her nose prickled from the chill it emitted. Not entirely sure how she knew what to do Erthë took aim at one of her attackers and let go, the twang of the string accompanying her thrumming heart as the light shot straight from the bow, towards the bird and... Missed. But it startled the avians enough to break away and scatter, angry squawks filling the air as they flapped and strained to gain more height. Breathing quickly now, a newfound strength filling her to the brim with courage, Erthë shot a quick glance towards the young stallion to see how he fared. Please, oh Lady of all Winds, keep him safe! I don't want any more people get hurt for my sake. "And all the pretty tulips would disappear And never disturb me again" @Aeolus

E r t h ë "And now I wish to God that The earth would turn cold And my heart would forget it's made of glass" The brightness of the arrow remained emblazoned on her retina even after the cold magic had already dissolved. With the memory of light fading from her eyes Erthë made her way towards Aeolus, his triumph reflected by the grin on her lips. Yet it was not only the arousing flavor of victory that drove her to meet him; even when distances had been bridged she kept limping towards him, until her frigid chest could crash against his and winter white wings were able to close around his neck in an embrace that was at once shy and almost violent in its intensity. "Thank the Moon you're alright" she breathed, voice quivering as tension and worry bled away from the wispy frame. "You are, aren't you?" Suddenly suspicious she withdrew slightly so she could look him over, the one seeing eye raking across his body in search of injuries. The cut on his cheek made her wince sympathetically, but when it became clear that it was the only mark to mar his visage the little girl relaxed again. "I was worried, I thought you would get pecked for sure" she said and glanced up at the circling birds overhead, careful to avoid registering what was left of the dark figure on the ground. "Thank you for helping me. Though... I don't know if there was any point in the whole thing..." Because even as she spoke, even as some vultures flew off in search of easier meals, the majority was already lowering themselves down through the air again. With a lump in her throat the pale hybrid followed their descent, sorrow lining her childish features as she abruptly turned her back on the birds, the carcass, the whole mess of a situation. "Come on" she mumbled, "let's go somewhere else. I need some shade..." Tucking the enchanted bow beneath a small wing she made to lead the way off, unable to stand the sound of the corpse cleaners anymore. "And all the pretty tulips would disappear And never disturb me again" @Aeolus - so so sorry for the wait. I'll leave it to you if you want to respond or not, either way I think we can probably wrap this up soon, or what do you say. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
