Since Shadow's death Vadim has never let his eyes stray from his child and has not allowed her to wander far on her own. Vlasi's eagle form allows her to soar high overhead and her sharp eyes allow her to keep her eyes locked on the pale child, and her bond with Vadim keeps him informed of her whereabouts. He thinks that his child is underestimating him, he thinks that she thinks she is slick and can easily go unnoticed, but she is the center of his attention. Besides Vlasi she is the only thing in his life that holds any real value and importance. The sooner she understands that, he thinks, the sooner she will understand that his dedication to her is not to be underestimated.

He is several yards behind his child, but thanks to Valsi he sees when she plunges into the water and he knows when the tide grabs hold of her tiny body and sweeps her away. Overhead Vlasi screeches and swoops down toward the child, her taloned feet ready to grab hold of the child and drag her to shore should her head dip below the water. Behind her Vadim crashes into the water and fights against the current and the waves in his attempt to catch up with his child, but her lighter body allows her to be swept away more quickly.

She reaches the shore before he does and as the child stands Vlasi assumes her usual cerberus form and growls her disapproval at the filly. "Stay with her." Vadim instructs as he continues to fight the current until he reaches the shore. Erthë and the cerberus have already reached the gathering by the time Vadim makes it to the shore. He is exhausted but does not take the time to rest, instead he presses onward until he finds his child and when he does he snorts, and frowns at the spray of black sludge that spatters through the air.

"Erthë..." He speaks her name, lowers his head to check her over, then looks at everyone gathering around the God of the Earth, then at the portal. This had to be what his child had told him about before.
