"It can turn the whole world upside down, shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground.
We don't have to reap the fear they sow, friends, as long as we hide our love away,
In the good they'll never know."

It was a long trip from the eastern extreme of Helovia to the far western shores where the Edge sat nestled on the high cliffs above the sea.  Iona didn’t mind the walk, though.  That, in itself, was saying a lot for the winged woman was hardly ever caught on the ground.  She much preferred the skies.  It had been that way since birth – Iona had always been drawn to the clouds and learned to be a much more adept flier than her sister, who in turn learned all the secrets the earth had to offer.  The forests of the threshold gave way to the wide meadows that spanned the interiror of Helovia, and Iona pulled her wings tightly against her sides before stepping into an easy canter.

She kept one ear flicked back towards Lithium, so as to catch any questions the young stallion may have on the journey, but for the most part the painted mare kept her thoughts to herself.  She thought she’d let him enjoy the journey across the interior of Helovia.

All the while, Iona kept her eyes on the shadows – a habit cultivated after years spent as a warrior in her own right.  One ambush was all it took to learn to keep her guard up at all times, even when they grew closer to the Edge and the promise of safety.  “It’s not far,” she called, as the trees again loomed before them.  As they broke the line of trees, Iona slowed to a trot and eventually a walk.  She knew that deathtrap of a glass wall was coming up, and she figured that it wouldn’t be the kindest welcoming to spear new recruits on the front door.

When the jagged wall loomed before them, she again looked back to Lithium.  ”Watch for glass shards. It’s all still sharp.”  The pegasus normally elected to skip the wall altogether, and the dangers associated with it, but she knew doing so today would be overtly rude so she was content to leap over the shattered bits and pieces without the aid of her wings.

Once clear, she stepped into the misty lands of the Edge.  Home.  She turned back to the young stallion in hopes of gauging his reaction to the place.  “Welcome to the World’s Edge,” she announced, with something akin to pride in her voice. “But don’t head too far west…the mists can hide the actual edge,” she added, with a smirk.

After a long travel to Helovia, Lithium was already worn out, but now the brute pushed on towards his new home, World's Edge.  Little did he know it would feel as if he was literally traveling to the edge of the world.  He had never realized how out of shape he was until he started this journey.  Now as they neared the end he felt as if he might just walk right out of his hooves.

The conversation was nonexistent which was fine with the young brute.  He abhorred small talk, such little pleasantries always left him dreadfully bored.  Though he did notice that Miss Iona stayed with him instead of taking to the skies.  His mind wandered, wondering if she ever walked much.  Surely she preferred the freedom of flying, but she didn't seem to mind having to be ground ridden because of him.

When they approached the large, glass wall that surrounded what he assumed was World's Edge, his first feeling was shock.  Shock soon turned into admiration though, as his eyes scanned the dilapidated wall that sprinkled sparkling glass all over the ground.  It glitted in the sunlight, sending a beautiful, yet deadly vibe which Lithium could definitely get on board with.

A flash of movement caught his eyes as he watched with such fascination as Iona jumped gracefully over the glass.  The slightest rustle of feathers caught his greedy eyes once more and he was overcome with a perverted thought, he could own wings if he just stole them from her.  Just for a second, his mind wandered into a daydream of him peeling the wings from her body and sticking them to his own, the large wings flapped with such might.

A blink and it was gone, back to reality as if nothing had happened.  These visions were not new to the brute, he knew they meant nothing, and instead followed behind Iona, careful not to step on too much glass.  He would be lying if he said he "accidentally" ran into a few large pieces, relishing the feeling of blood run down his white legs.  It was all he could do to keep from rubbing his maw over them.

His aud flickered in her direction as they finally paused and he took the whole area in.  "It's glorious," he said with a large smile.  "Have you found the actual edge before?" Lithium uttered with a sly grin, surely she would enjoy the rush of jumping from a cliff and stretching her glorious wings just before bottom.

Lumbering back from the cliffs in search of some herdmates— he had spent most of the morning on his lonesome and found that he wanted company for the afternoon— the giant antelope followed his ears towards the sounds of voices and hooves. His long strides swept across the warm earth, what few pieces of glass he stepped on melted beneath the crushing hooves of the Glazier. Deep blue eyes search the trees for the source of the noises. He made out a vague warning from a mare followed by a rougher, male voice.

It must be a newcomer, if the mare was warning about the sharpness of the glass. Every herd member knew to avoid it from the moment the were welcomed into the lands. Indeed there was a new arrival, as his gargantuan form finally broke through the trees, and his deep blue gaze was drawn to the small rivulets of blood spiraling down the grey colt’s legs.

His eyes sweep up, first to the winged mare. He had seen her around the herdlands, but had not been properly introduced. Though he still smiled and nodded a greeting to the mare, before returning his attention to the young stallion. “Indeed, most herd members visit the Edge’s edge when they first come to the lands. It is wise to know where the sheer drop-off is,” his deep voice answers for the black-and-white painted mare, “I’m just coming from the cliffs, now. We could all head back there, if you should like to see them?”

He gestures towards their general direction with a wave of his thickly spiraled horn. Belatedly, he introduces himself, “I am Tembovu, Glazier of the herd.” He grins lopsidedly, gaze studying the electric blue markings beneath the newcomer’s eyes, “And we’ve healers if you’d like those nicks on your legs seen to?” he pauses, glancing at them, “Though they don’t seem life-threatening.”

"It can turn the whole world upside down, shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground.
We don't have to reap the fear they sow, friends, as long as we hide our love away,
In the good they'll never know."

Iona could feel the wariness in her bones.  Being unaccustomed to being earthbound for so long, such a trip took its toll on the mare.  However the burn in the lesser-used muscles was welcomed.  Though Iona was a warrior no more, she did her best to keep herself fighiting-fit.  Just in case.
“It is quite something,” she offered, glancing back to the silver stallion and beckoning him forward with a wing.

She could only imagine how tired Lithium must be – having just arrived in Helovia and then treked clear across the place.  However,  Iona knew that they wouldn’t have to wait long for the Edge’s welcome wagon to arrive.  It seemed like activity around the Edge was always stirring, despite the hour.  It was refreshing to see, not just promising for the future of the Edge, but it was quite a change from the empty ruins and overgrown streets from which she had come.  Iona had come from a land that was dying – slowly being drained of the magic that served as its lifeblood.  The Edge was the exact contast – growing, stirring, and glimmering with promise of something more on the horizion.  Iona did miss her magic, though.  It was something Aly had warned her about – that was the price of a fresh start.  Her mastery over the wind was gone, her enhanced speed had returned to the bounds of normal, and her wounds no longer healed themselves almost instantly.  Again, a necessary adjustment.  And again, the reverie made her wonder what kind of place Lithium had come from.  Had he paid such a price to come here, or was this the land of opportunity that offered such wonders for the first time?

It was Tembovu’s arrival that truly brought her back to the present. “Iona, one of the spies,” the painted mare said, with a polite dip of her head to the horned stallion whom she had seen but never formally met.  “This is Lithium, who has decided to join us. He’s hoping to become a warrior.”  Look who has manners after all!  However, at Tembovu’s mention of the wounds on Lithium’s legs, undoubtedly from the glass, Iona was somewhat abashed.  “I could certainly find my sister or one of the other healers if you need those cleaned up,”  she offered, belatedly. Iona made a note that Tembovu was one of the Glaziers.  Maybe he could do something about that health hazard of a wall…

“That doesn’t seem like a bad idea, Tembovu.  The cliff is one of my favorite places,”  there is something akin to excitement in her voice.  That and mischief. “Always good to know where the edge of the world is so you don’t go tumbling off the side,” she adds, casual as ever, with a smirk.

It was apparent to him that jokes were not totally understood in this herd. His little comment about finding the edge was taken quite seriously, which led him to a horribly lovely thought of him plunging over the edge. Perhaps it would be best to know exactly where the "edge of the world" was.

"I suppose we should. It seems to be in my best interest." he grinned.

At his introduction from Iona, he stood straighter and tried to look much more serious. If he was honest, it was extremely weird to hear his name uttered at all. Usually he preferred no one knew his name. He held the belief that if you know one's true name it gave you power over that individual. But in this case he would have never gained access to a herd without revealing his name so he considered it a necessary evil.

"Nice to meet you, Tembovu." Lithium said, giving a small bow of his head. What an exotic name, but it wasn't surprising when he studied the exotic coat that the other brute possessed. Now, he noticed the huge horn atop his head, he was starting to realize he was odd for not having anything odd about him other than his blue markings.

At the mention of his legs, Lithium instantly looked down and examined the blood. If he could blush he would have been bright red. No one would know he had drawn blood deliberately but it was like a small child getting their hand caught in the cookie jar and he was ashamed.

Lithium looked up, a small grin on his face to mask his embarrassment. "Oh no, it's nothing worth fusing over." Anger filled him, anger from his own impulses and anger at Tembovu just for noticing and fretting over something so small. What was a Glazier anyway? Some kind of male healer?

"I would love to see it then." Lithium replied to Iona at her mention of the cliff. He waited expectantly for them to show him the way to this famed cliff.

His large head dips sightly as Iona introduced herself— though spies left a sense of unease in his great barrel, he did not find the the winged mare’s company unsettling. His brows raise as she mentions that her sister was a healer, “You’re sister to one of the Doctors?” He questions in surprise, “Alysanne?” He guesses after glancing at both her wings and black-and-white coloring.

He nodded in agreement as the grey man, ‘Lithium,’ opted not to have his legs looked after— but was surprised by the flash of anger (is that what he had seen?) cross over the handsome blue-marked face. His own dark blue eyes study the newcomer’s for a few moments longer, curiosity and unease percolating through his large chest.

”"I would love to see it then.” His head cocked ever so slightly at the emphasis on the word in response to Iona’s smirking remark. Strange. “Well then, let us see our ‘famed cliffs,’ his deep, rumbling voice using the same vernacular as Lithium.

His sweeping strides start leading them towards the white drop off, “So, why do you wish to be a warrior, Lithium?” He spares a glance towards the grey colt, curious about his reasons.

"It can turn the whole world upside down, shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground.
We don't have to reap the fear they sow, friends, as long as we hide our love away,
In the good they'll never know."

“Smart man,” Iona offers, with a wry smile, though it certainly wouldn’t take any great powers of deduction when you saw the two sisters together.  Same height, approximately the same build – though Iona kept her frame more streamlined due to hours spent in the skies, same eyes, the only difference was in the patterns of their coats.  And just about everything in terms of personality.  Where Alysanne was compassionate; Iona was brash.  Alysanne was water; Iona was fire.  Alysanne was earth; Iona was sky.  Two halves to one whole. It made sense, all things considered.

“Aly’s my twin,” she answered, meeting the great stallion’s gaze directly. “Though she’s lived here for years.  I’ve only recently joined her here.  Retired from fighting and, well, here I am. The whole good versus evil thing was getting old.” she replied, with a dry laugh.  Her gaze again flicked between the two stallions – the silver and the mammoth.  It was obvious to most that looked at Iona she had done some sort of fighting in the past, but Iona had decided to pursue a new life when she came to join her sister here in Helovia.  Fighting for the resistance had taken its toll on the painted mare, though she’d take up arms in a heartbeat to defend her family (and her herd) if called upon.  She just didn’t want to make a life of it this time around.

This was her second chance, after all.

Her attention quickly flicked back to Lithium.  She watches the interaction between the two stallions with a guarded sense of interest before finally seizing the opportunity to jump in.  She could feel something brewing, and if Iona was anything – she was a control freak. “There are times when the cliffs are shrouded in a wicked mist, so its always good to know the boundaries and the landmarks on a clear day like today,” she says as she falls in step beside Tembovu, lengthening her own stride to match his own.

She’s interested to hear Lithium’s answer to Tembovu’s question, so she again lets herself fall quiet as she walks – her ears flicking towards the silver to pick up his answer.

As she picks out the Edge of the cliff growing on the horizon, she speaks again – this time her voice lighter, teasing. “Okay, no pushing, boys.  I’m not going over after you,” she says, with another small smile and a flicker in her bright green eyes, though they linger on the newcomer so as not to miss his reaction to the sea cliffs.

It seemed odd to Lithium that these two were herd mates yet had never met each other. How big was this herd that they wouldn't have even bumped into each other at least once? There was a good possibly that these herds were significantly larger than the ones he was used to. Plus, it wasn't like there was a huge welcome party here for him either. So if he were to meet any of the herd he would have to just run into them.

The extremely large brute, Tembovu, seemed to pick up on his slight hostility but Lithium didn't care. What he did note though, was that Tembovu used the exact words Lithium had thought. It was as if they were plucked straight from his own brain, which worried him. Could equines read minds here as well? If they could fly, have crazy colors and have horns, why wouldn't they be able to read minds? ...

Though it was annoying for Lithium to walk behind the two, as if he was a child being shown around, he took a moment to regain his composure. More than once in his life his mouth had gotten him in trouble.

Tembovu's question caught Lithium off guard. As a male he was always told that he was going to be a warrior, what else could he be?

"I suppose it's a little bit of the thrill, a little bit of the glory and a lot of the pride that comes with defending something important." Lithium said with a shrug. "I guess that is what draws me to it."

Iona's words drew him back to the present as he approached the edge. The rumbling water below was so ominous as it crashed against the edge. Beyond all he could see was the ocean, expanding out to the horizon.

"You guys were right," he said, enjoying the sound of the water, "this is beautiful."

His low, rich chuckle rumbled from his chest at Iona’s teasing words. “I wouldn’t mind being caught by those wings,” his great horn motions towards her impressive ebony and ivory set, a wry grin on his broad face. Truly, the giant had always wondered after the sensation of flying. Though he had never seen a set of wings massive enough to lift his heavy body. Ah well, he was just as happy earth-bound.

Sweeping legs halt, a few strides from the cliff’s edge— for he did not trust the crumbling white rock with his weight. It most likely would be able to hold the mammoth… but he is happy to let Lithium and Iona take the front as they approach the sheer drop off. His ears perk to listen to the grey stud answer his question and then his great head nods, “Those are fine reasons,” he says simply. He was glad to know that a Protector of the Edge had seemingly noble motivations for being a warrior.

“You guys were right, this is beautiful.” An outright grin grew on his black-and-cream face at the silver’s words. He casts his gaze to the sea, then along the cliffs that were still shrouded in mists to the north of them. “It is magnificent,” his voice is quiet, “Truly the World’s Edge.” Often he wandered the Edge in thought, the awe-inspiring cliffs becoming a commonplace in his mind’s eye. But, in the face of a newcomer’s adoration, his own awe rekindled.

“Where do yo come from, Lithium?” his question is both idle and pertinent simultaneously. “Or has our herd’s spy already uncovered your past?” eyes swing to Iona for a moment, curiosity piqued. He wondered where she came from— what was her story? Though perhaps that was a question for another time.
