He notes her lowered gaze, a sign of respect, of submission. It irks him slightly, gently rubbing him the wrong way. He did not aim to be her superior. He aimed to be her equal. Her friend. Thought held his tongue— that would be a conversation for another day. When less emotions, less confusion, were thickening the air between the silver and the elephant.
Her responding words— or the lack of their usual bravado— also settled uneasily in him. Would he continually place his hoof in his mouth with Nyx? Though he is slightly mollified as she relaxes, accepting the bump of his muzzle and returning it in kind. He felt the thick, yet silken, strands of her tail sway against his hocks, and an unconscious sigh and low hum of satisfaction escaped him. This was so easy, so effortless, being around the warrior mare.
His eyes followed hers to her frolicking foals, red and silver covering ground as fast as spindly legs would allow. His ear flicked sideways, catching her offer of help. There is weight to her words, giving them genuine meaning. He shifts uneasily as the awkwardness of the situation one again overwhelms him.
But the mare spoke true, and that meant a great deal to the Elephant. “Thank you, Nyx,” his rumble was simple, honest. As it always was with this voltaic, grey mare… friend? His head raised, ears swiveling as he heard vague introductions at the Edge’s border. Most likely new recruits to greet.
“I’ll leave you to your ‘mischievous shits,’” a smile, nearly melancholic, crossed his masked face as long strides began to carry him away. A single, short look was cast over his shoulder, seeking the mare’s electric gaze (despite her aversion to eye contact), before he disappeared into the trees.
