Alone.

Alone again once more.

It was the way it had always been for the hybrid, and it brought the same comfort to him as being in a herd did for others. The sea was a home and a sanctuary that no other of his species could encroach on even if they wanted to. He had left the Riptide Isles almost immediately upon exiting that portal or whatever it was. Was that so-called Earth God really a god? A being of such unimaginable power that could create new land on a whim? He might have been more shocked had he not been an inhabitant of the Rift, a land of chaotic and whimsical Gods. His own physical form was proof of that after all...

A sigh of exasperation escaped his lips as a stream of bubbles as he pondered the current situation fate had landed the him in this time. This was not the Rift he was in anymore. This didn’t even seem to be the same dimension. Whatever it was called, maybe it would be a new start for the hybrid where he wasn’t a feared outcast. Although he preferred solitude, the equine side of him secretly longed to be with others, in a herd.

Putting those thoughts aside, he looked around as his tail propelled him through the water at a relaxed pace, limbs dangling. The water here was clear but cold, and shallow enough to see the bottom but not touch it. Small fish flitted to and fro before him and the muffled sound of water filled his ears. It was getting more shallow as he moved, and the seabed sloped gently upwards ahead of him to show the coast was close now.

There didn’t seem to be movement on the beach above, and he didn’t feel the need to get out and dry out for no reason and so decided to stay in the shallows and float languidly for the time being. Maybe if someone appeared he would set foot on the sands...

"Talk?"
Upon the surface,
it seems quiet and calm...

we run like a river runs to the sea</style>

After the Earth God’s battle, the ocean mare hadn’t hurried off of the islands, as some others had. She had tarried for a short while, looking after the winged filly and attempting to gather herself together again (for the constant violence of battle is nothing but harrowing for a peaceable-hearted creature like herself). She feels better now, with her father’s gift hanging around her neck and pressing against her chest—as though his strength is with her.

With cloven hooves sweeping delicately from the earthen bridge and onto coastal sands, the ocean mare pauses for a short breath, long tresses dancing to curl up about her face as her movement halts. White eyes look out to her left, where the shores of her father are not powerful, frothing waves as usual, but a still and calm water, allowing the summer sky to be reflected perfectly across its glassy surface. Had she not known better, Tiamat would think that she could fly—release herself among the lower clouds and soft blue silk of her mother sky. She has always wondered what it would be like, to fly. How joyous it must be!

Pressing her lips together in a gentle, amiable line, the blue unicorn exhales a wistful sigh from her nostrils before she presses forward, crossing the pearly sands before stepping into the liquid mirror of Halcyon Flats. She has only been to this tranquil land once before, and—oh—how she remembers it well. The Sun God had brought these clear waters to them, promising His people nothing but peace, promising that there would be no violence, promising that there would be no bloodshed. And she had dared to believe Him. But—how terribly, regrettably wrong He had been. Evil had indeed come, a battle was fought, and blood had been spilled.

Surely, a God can make mistakes too?

Tiamat’s good heart can think of nothing but to forgive Him, to give Him the benefit of the doubt, no matter how bitter the betrayal had seethed through her. She believes that the Sun God had done all that He could for them, and harbored only the best of intentions in His actions (because that’s what a God is, isn’t it? A protector? A guardian? A leader?)

Brushing the length of her plumed tail across the water’s salty surface, she watches the ripples as they expand before slowly disappearing, pondering on such things in a peaceful silence. It is only then that she notices movement, a fair distance away, where the shallow waters gradually drop off to the ocean’s broad depth. Tiamat pricks her ears forward, dainty head lowering as she moves closer, trying to see, and trying to make out… “Oh my goodness,” the blue mare gasps, recognizing with horror what she thinks to be an equine at its bottom. “Hello!” She calls down to the stranger, despite it being useless. Spinning around, she cries to the empty shore, “HELP! Someone help!” Looking back to the drowning equine in a flurry of hair and shells, she braces herself, prepared to swim—if only to try.

She can’t not try.

What had happened after the gathering of equines? It seemed like some of them had also come through the portal from the Rift. The rest must have been from this new and vastly different world, whatever it was called,.. Rude wondered if there had been a battle or was it just some kind of  welcoming from the Earth God? Knowing the Rift and how corrupted it was, it would not have been surprising if something else had come through afterwards. He shivered at the thought.

What if had been one of the Rift Gods?

Of course, Rude had never seen any of them and he wasn’t really sure how many there even were or if they even had a physical form at all... It was well known among the inhabitants of the Rift that their Gods were vindictive and cruel just for the sake of being cruel and took great amusement from tormenting those below them. It was thoughts like these that drove the finned equine to flee from the group as soon as he could regardless of whether a battle had taken place or not. He knew the rest of the group probably thought him a coward for running, his lonely upbringing and shark nature made him wary around large groups.

He didn’t want to admit it to himself, but the hybrid was scared of the Rift Gods and their powers.

The silver flash of a fish passing in front of his vision snapped him out of his absent daydreaming and he made to swim after it. He was kind of hungry after all and knew all too well that fish were a much safer option than other equines. A splash of water at the shore distracted him though. Rude gazed up towards the beach to try and see who or what it was. Had another equine come to seek the solace of the sea? As he did so, the newcomer looked into the water at his position before a female voice suddenly started shouting out for someone to help her.

Was she in danger? Rude looked about frantically but couldn’t see- before realising what the situation probably looked like from the mare’s side. “Oh, I see now.” he thought, with a slight laugh. With a swipe of his tail, legs met earth and he walked out of the ocean and onto the beach with ease. The shark horse was slightly nervous about this mare’s reaction but couldn’t resist seeing her reaction to a supposedly drowning horse walking out of the ocean.

”Greetings.” he offered, with a smirk and a flash of sharp teeth.

     tiamat</style>
we run like a river runs to the sea</style>

The ocean mare watches frantically, white eyes wide and her breath held in the horror that grips her, running cold and heavy beneath her skin. It takes a moment for the adrenaline to release itself into her veins, a moment for her courage to grasp that fiery resolve in her good heart and push her into action—and as supple muscles gather beneath her satin skin, she only prays that it isn’t a moment too late (she would never be able to forgive herself, hoping that the goodness in the world—the goodness that she sees and knows is there—will play kindly with the line between life and death). Nightmares flash behind her eyes, terrible memories urging her forward.

However, just as Tiamat begins to push herself from the reef’s edge and into the ocean’s clear depths, she notices something—the poor creature, he is—he is rising. The blue mare catches herself, cloven hooves stumbling under the water’s surface before settling again on the flat sands, her thoughts racing and far too preoccupied with the phenomenon she thinks might be unfolding. Ever a believer in the extraordinary, in miracles, she can only assume the best as the stranger float closer to her. Swimming? Could he possibly be…swimming?

For all of her easy conversation, Tiamat finds herself at a loss of words when the stranger emerges from the calm tides. He slips from the briny depths as easily as one would ascend a hill, revealing himself as…what? What is he? Tiamat has never seen the likes of him before (not even close) and both wonderment and curiosity slowly swell and smother the horror that had gripped her so fiercely (she does not even consider what predatory natures he might have, too naïve and innocent to deliberate such dark things).

He greets her so simply, so nonchalantly, that the ocean mare can only laugh. She laughs at her own expense, her daze finally clearing as the chiming sound reverberates through her bones, a bashful smile softening her lips. “You—you were just—How?—I thought—” Her mind moves too fast for her tongue to keep up, spurting out bursts of words in incredulous awe, each fumbling over the other as her curiosity wrestles for understanding. “What—?” Tiamat finally breathes, her blue brow rising as she looks to him, her gaze skirting across his foreign figure. He does seem equine-like, but definitely like no equine she has ever seen before, more reminiscent of her father’s sea creatures.

“Forgive me, Sir—I have never seen someone like yourself before,” the ocean mare realizes that she’s been staring, and she certainly doesn’t want to offend him. Offering him an apologetic grin, her eyes seek his own (so bright, bewitching almost). “My name is Tiamat,” the mare bows her head in a dainty curtsy, “Are you all right?” She has to ask, even if by all appearances he seems to be perfectly fine—as though swimming deep into the ocean is normal. Unable to quell her interest any longer, it sparks another question from her lips, “Can you…breathe down there? Under water?” Her doe-eyes glisten with wonder, her breath baited in awe.

The shark-like stallion smiled in silent amusement, serrated teeth glinting in the bright sun shining down from above as the mare before him cycled through a range of emotions from fear to shock and...was that excitement or curiosity? Whether that fear was in reaction to his freakish being one of predator and prey rolled into one or fear for his life that had looked to be in danger from drowning mere moments before he wasn’t completely sure. But judging from the fact her expression rapidly turned to one of wonder, it was fair to say it had been the latter of the two. He was used to seeing others recoil in horror, so it made a nice change to the routine of being an outcast.

Regardless, even after his laidback greeting, he still half-expected her to scream. Or just straight up run away in fear. But she didn’t. Instead this beach-going mare laughed. She laughed. It was a gentle sound, like the flow of water through a stream and a sound that Rude had very rarely heard from another equine and even then only from a distance and never involving him. The Rift was not a happy place and laughter of any kind was rare. Most of it was the cackles of the mad or the sadistic. So it was an unfamiliar feeling to be the cause of another’s mirth. 'What a difference a day makes...’ the stallion thought sarcastically, with an internal smirk.

Suddenly, the mare begins to blurt out a sentence and in her confusion fumbles over her words as she tried to make sense of the last few minutes. “...I was drowning?” he grinned, as he finished her sentence for her. He followed her gaze as she observed him in curiosity, presumably trying to figure out if he was actually an equine at all. She confirmed this with her next sentence as she gave him an apologetic grin. “No need for apologies.” Rude shook his head. “I’m sure my appearance was quite surprising after all.” She needn’t have worried about offending him, he was used to stares and she didn’t seem to harbour any ill-will towards him anyway. “A pleasure, Miss Tiamat. I am Rude.” Rude introduced himself with a bow of the head, playing up to her curtsy with a grin. “And don’t worry about me, I’m fine.” He said, giving a swish of the strange, finned tail to show her everything was as it should be.

Rude watched with amusement as Tiamat’s eyes glistened with wonder as she asked him the long-awaited question of whether or not he could breathe under the ocean. He couldn’t help but laugh slightly, this mare was like a child with all her questions. “Yes, I can stay under the water for as long as I want thanks to these.” He turned his head to the side to let her see the gills on the side of his neck, “Just like a fish!” he exclaimed, looking at Tiamat with a sideways glance of his almost luminescent eyes. For his first real meeting with a native of this so-called land of Helovia, this was going much better than expected.

     tiamat</style>
we run like a river runs to the sea</style>

“Yes,” the word is mingled with laughter as the peculiar stallion manages to finish her train of thought, and the ocean mare shakes her head at herself, a bashful smile softening her lips. She would like to think that she isn’t normally so flustered, but who wouldn’t be?! He had been drowning, and then swimming, and then he was talking and waving a tail that is unlike any equine tail she’s ever seen before—she can’t really blame herself. In any case, the unusual stallion doesn’t seem offended or particularly bothered by her confusion, and that is really all that matters. Tiamat has every intention of making a friend in this individual.

She nods kindly when the shark-horse continues, brushing away her apologies, and she can’t help but laugh airily at his comment. Tiamat can imagine that he’s used to such blubbering reactions (at least in this world, though the possibility that he’s a refugee from the Rift has yet to occur to the ocean mare. Her thoughts are too occupied with her wonder at the moment). “You’re very unique,” she offers him a soft grin, her words meant to be nothing but a compliment.

Tiamat’s grin widens when the unique stallion bows his large gray head, and introduces himself as Rude. While his toothy grin and seemingly predatory ‘instincts’ would scare off others (perhaps wisely so), the blue mare sees nothing but kindness in this man. He has yet to show her otherwise, and she is not the presumptuous sort. Everyone is a friend, as far as she is concerned, unless they do some ghastly deed to sway the candidness of her heart (a feat she prays will never happen). “Well that’s good to hear, Rude. It’s a pleasure as well—I’m glad to hear you’re okay,” her blue brow furrows in an expression of genuineness.

Flicking the length of her leonine tail, she waits with baited breath for his answer to her question. It is surreal to the ocean mare to think that a creature not restricted to water, would be able to not only stay under its surface, but survive there. The possibility opens up thoughts that haven’t occurred to her before. Fleetingly, Tiamat recalls Lena’s words back in the Basin, when the brown mare had explained how the gods had given her magic…perhaps—would the gods give her the chance to be with her father that way? She purses her lips, wanting nothing but to believe in the gods’ goodness, despite the horrible violence they have brought to them.

Rude’s rumbling laughter brings her attention back to him, ears pricking forward and her excitement swelling in the breath before he speaks. “Oh—wow!” The blue mare exclaims as he twists his head, displaying the gills that line his neck. This guy is just full of surprises, isn’t he? It’s fascinating! She grins wide, hardly able to contain her excitement. “That’s amazing, have you always been able to? Were you born this way?” Tiamat questions the shark-stallion in animated wonder, her white eyes round and shining in her curiosity.

It is almost difficult to explain the emotions that ebb and flow inside of her. Above all there is her amazement and delight, but just underneath, she cannot deny the tiny bit of jealousy that is there (however selfish and misplaced it might be). Tiamat can only imagine what it would be like to be so physically connected to the water, and hopes to one day—somehow, perhaps—share Rude’s ability. “I love the ocean myself, I think it would be amazing to be able to stay under the water,” the ocean mare sighs wistfully, the corners of her mouth curling upwards as she looks out across the waters. They are endless in this magical place, mirroring the sky and stretching into eternity—beckoning.
