The clay cracks beneath lapis hooves as the night stallion steps onto the barren land, and he almost wished he had stayed in the safety of the lush grass. The heat rolls languidly across the cracked soil, and he knows there is no time to waste, he would collect what he had come to get and seek somewhere cool in order to recouperate from the withering heat.

He's sure and careful in his footing, long, leonine tail curled high above the scorched plain and it flicked once against the warm breeze. Silvery eyes peeled to the ground as he went, he mused that perhaps he'd taken the misted forests of the World's Edge for granted for the natural boons they provided. That and the enchanted boughs of Thal'Sharah, with the glittering pools that scattered the forested floors like glittering diamonds. Only on one other occasion had he stepped out into a land similar to the clay and cracked soil beneath his hooves, with the font of fire spewing like dragon's breath from the center.

The lunar sentinel pushed the thoughts of home from his mind with a gentle snort, there was no use in letting the heart pine for things that were so far away, or at least he tried. Now he was Seer here, like he had been Oracle back on the Isle, it sent fresh waves of fond memories into his mind. They lapped like gentle tides upon the banks, a vast ocean of warmth beckoning him to delve deep and wash away upon the current for hours at a time.

It would be so easy, to just simply cast of and stand like a figure caught in time. Let the memories flood and obscure his vision from the earthly plain. Be caught like the unsuspecting and often deserving souls flickering in and out of time by the Time Keepers hands, and watch the great tapestry of his life come apart before his eyes and be remade once again.
Easy, he concluded and shook his head. He would not give in today, not out within the scorched and withered plains he had visited.

Alune slowed and stopped at a glittering pile of dirt, his head lowered as his hoof gently unearthing the precious gemstone that had peered up at him from beneath it's soil cloak. It glittered like a tear from the night herself, smooth and delicate, hiding it's true strength beneath the illusion of fragility. This was what he had been searching for.

Pale muzzle nuzzled it out of it's protective dirt mound and into his teeth, and he stowed it within the nest of one of braids fashioned this time into a pouch like contraption to fit his needs. It sat like a bejeweled egg, delicately sat within a silvery nest of a great bird and he nodded to himself, content that it would stay before he continued on his search for another gemstone like it.
Though as his eyes returned to the vast expanse before him, it would take him some time to gather all the stones needed for his crafting and that was without resorting to the cave he spied near the fire belching from the pit.

Even longer without an extra voice and extra pair of eyes to aid the titanic stallion along.

Eventide is softly casting o'er the earth a magic spell,
And a love-song, everlasting, on the night wind seems to swell.

Good thing the Seer would never have to be without extra eyes and helpful voices, then. Whether he knew it or not, whether he had gotten used to her presence or not, Alune had acquired a shadow. It was small and slow, oddly pale and often lagging behind due to a limping stride and refusal to make use of the wings when her superior was walking, but she was there, nearly always. Whether he wanted her to, or not.

See, Erthë had a job to do now. She was very proud of it, and so keen to do it that it bordered on obsession. Often the filly didn't exactly understand what the Seer was doing; the rituals, the prayers, the obscure discussions with other learned equids. But she listened, and assumed she would wake up one day and just understand all of it on her own, like she had woken up to find that magic had blossomed within her over night, without her doing anything.

This too kept her thoughts occupied, and as she trailed her seer-boss-man across the wilderness of Helovia Erthë passed the time trying to familiarize herself with the frosty magic. Everything froze where she passed. Pools and puddles, rain and rivers and lakes, sweat and mist and even the air itself - nothing was safe from her eager eyes, everything had to be tested. It came, of course, with the added bonus of staving off the last remnants of warmth that lingered, more pronounced the further south they came. Some days when the air grew particularly warm and no wind bowed the yellowed grass her efforts left mist trailing in her wake, as droplets of water froze and vaporized and remained hanging. Ever they followed her, and Alune too; swirling and swaying, twisting and shaping into critters and beasts, small animals of common and mythical origins alike.

She ducked into the caves with far less concern than her master. It wasn't the first time she had visited this sanctuary, nor would it likely be the last. While perhaps not very fond of the place Erthë found it enjoyable enough to visit from time to time; the irregular rhythm of her limping stride sounded almost cheery as she followed in the midnight stallion's wake, her eyes gleaming near colorlessly pale in the red light of the Heart.

"What are you looking for?" she asked, for once choosing to break the silence in order to sate her curiosity as Alune began to poke around the floor and unearthed a sizable gemstone. "There's a whole cave full of those further in" she pointed out. "And a cave with glowing plants, and a room with stories on the walls. This place isn't very interesting... unless you like fire."

She cast a scathing look at the furnace beyond the quartz window before pointedly turning her back on the churning, writhing mass of molten rock below. Reaching for the place in her mind where the cold, glittering power nestled she grasped it and made it bend to her will, soon making the air glitter with frost as the water in the air around her froze.

Ah, what an elegant shadow to have. He was proud to have the porcelain filly in his presence, and he appreciated her company even more. She stuck to him like glue it seemed, whenever she was not off exploring and making good use of her feathery wings. To have wings, he mused, what he wouldn't give for a magnificent pair upon his back to soar the skies with. Maybe he should request a pair from the Lady Moon when his time came to be blessed with magic to make it so, for now, he was content to make his way across the vibrant land with the use of his hooves.

Besides, he had these mist creatures to make the longer trips more entertaining. Their hazy forms had taken to birds this day, resting on his rump or flitting about his feet as the mist rolled forth with his step.

The cave was entered with a mild form of hesitance from the much larger unicorn, head ducked low to avoid any hanging spires from the ceiling as he followed the more confident filly. She seemed to know where she was going, so he dropped to follow behind her at a leisured pace — it wouldn't be a lie to also say he had slowed down to make sure he would slip or trip, how embarrassing it would be for the Seer to do so.

Slip and fly right past his little apprentice, rump high in the air, hair wildly flailing about his titanic mass with his limbs spread like a doe on ice. With enough momentum with his great body, he'd glide across the entire cave he imagined, the vivid image of his blue ass being the last thing poor Erthë saw as he dropped out of view with a wailing cry that would echo throughout the entire network of caverns.

The monsters that lurked would get dinner and a show.

Thoughts were quickly dismissed as his hooves touched more flat ground, gladly and silently saying a prayer to the Goddess to thank her that his ass, and the poor girls innocence was safe for another day. The immaculate voice of his companion reached his ears then, and he turned his attention to her.

"Gemstones, milady." He responded with a bemused smile, the twinkle in his silver eyes glinting just that bit brighter. "I'm going to craft pauldrons, but first I need to gather these stones to weave into them." He paused with the information that she knew of a cavern filled with them as well as a few others, his prehensile tail giving a small flick. "Would you care to show me the way to them all? I agree, fire can be rather boring. Too many hot-heads wield it, no?" There's clearly a story to his statement, but he doesn't continue with it, it was a story for another time. "After this, perhaps we'll go back to the Edge and see if the Goddess has anything to show us today."

Alune watched the headstrong filly then turn her back on the frothing magma kept at bay behind the glittering wall of quartz, frost and ice suited her like a delicate lace glove. Not the destructive and often ill-wielded forces of chaotic fire and charred earth. Too many warriors sought it for selfish means, too many villains twisted and gnarled the earth to make others see their point. Alune had never been fond of it either, preferring the might of frost, the stars and the pure energy of magic itself to come to his defense. He didn't have to wait long to be proven right when it came to Erthë's element of choice, the air dipped in it's heat and the air sang instead with cool and frost.

"Fine magic for a pale lady of the moon." The seer complimented, nose reaching out to touch one of the suspended flakes of frost. The misted birds on his back chirped a silent tune and vanished, only to appear again as miniature polar bears, foxes and hares — as enthralled with her magic as their master was. "Soon you'll be able to freeze me in place." Unable to help himself with an added jest. "But let us move on, and you can show me more of that magic as we gather these gems."

The filly turned her attention back to the Seer and tilted the small head curiously as she mused over his words. What use gems might be in the making of paud... pauldrons was more than she knew, and it intrigued her even more to think that the stallion not only knew lots about the Lady Moon but could craft too.

Grinning her appreciation over his remark about her magic she nodded, though was far more focused on the reason why they were there than on the magic that turned the air around her into a misty, glittering haze of cold.

"Sure, it's this way" she replied and pointed her nose to one of the side passages. Slow due to her limping stride but determined nevertheless the filly shuffled past her master and started down the tunnel that emerged in a cavern full of glowing plants, then further in on another path again until the curious glow of moss and lichen faded. A strange blue glow took over instead as the material of the walls and ceiling changed. Rough, solid rock was replaced by the faceted surface of crystals, thousands upon thousands of them that reflected whatever light that managed to trickle down though cracks and fissures in the ground.

"Here's the place!" she said redundantly, and listened with twitching ears as her voice was picked up by the glittering facets and thrown around the room in endless loops. Glancing over at Alune she grinned a little, excited to see his reaction, and continued further into the room - carefully, because the floor soon became covered in crystals too and they were both sharp and slippery under her feet.

"Pretty, isn't it!? I'll help you pick, just tell me which ones you need. Do you think the Lady will answer if we call on her? She doesn't seem the type to come when people ask her to, and I don't want to make her angry by being annoying." Erthë frowned as she eyed the glittering diamond fragments that littered the corners, outwardly looking entirely focused on the task of choosing gems even though her mouth kept bringing her from topic to topic in rapid, restless streams of thought.

"It'd be really wonderful to see her again though, I can't wait until we get back home! How will you summon her? Can I be there when you do? It must be wonderful to be Seer, also I didn't know you could make stuff too. Do you use glass like the Glaziers, or something else?"

After rummaging through a particularly shiny pile of gems she emerged with a thin, dangerous looking shard between her lips and held it out towards the Seer, query in her eager eyes as she bade him approve or discard it. Once he had decided where she ought to put it she put it in its proper place and added again, with a kind of fierce curiosity;

"Oh, and what are 'pauldrons?"
