Orangemoon had cooled the Throat enough that Mesec felt safe to venture out under the midday sun. Well, okay, today there wasn’t so much as a midday sun as a midday lightening of the clouds. The cooler season had been bringing a surge of rain and clouds into the area lately. The rain had stopped for now, thankfully, but the effects that the increased rain levels were having on the island herdland were already noticeable. It was greener here than Mesec had ever seen before, a flush of life all around. He was wandering down near the coast, which was significantly further inland than it had been in Tallsun. He wondered if any of his and Zero’s hippocamp friends were exploring their expanded home - and Lucius was wondering the same thing.

The zephyr was skimming low across the surface of the grey ocean, seeking fish or whatever else he might be able to snatch up for a midday snack. He wondered, idly sharing the thoughts with Mesec, whether the pygmy hippocamps were edible or whether it would be strange to eat something that had similar characteristics to his bonded.

Frowning at the dark shape of his companion, Mesec politely asked him to avoid that subject from here on out.

Eager to turn to happier thoughts, the small colourful creatures reminded Mesec that it had been a while since he had seen his young friend. He had dismissed himself from the group that had travelled back with Zero from the Isles, knowing that he could have added little to any further conversation when he had added nothing in the aftermath of the fight with the God. He hadn’t stood up for Zero or Isopia, hadn’t pledged himself to a side but lingered in uncertainty. He had wanted to make sure they were all safe but that was the end of his participation.

But that didn’t mean he hadn’t been interested in checking up on his friend - he had asked after him when he saw Ampere last and surely enough other things had happened by now to allow the temper from that day to cool completely. Yes, he'd like to see Zero again and make sure that he was doing alright. Resolving to keep an eye out for the next time they crossed paths, he turned from Lucius and began to wander farther along the flooded coast - making his way back northward along the grey ocean shore.

Seeing Isopia had been a great relief for the boy. He'd struggled with guilt after The Incident, worried about his friends, the results of his actions, and how he'd ever make it up to them. Isopia had been the first and biggest hurdle, and getting past that filled Zero with a brightly renewed confidence. He'd talked to his Ma, of course, and Gaucho too- the only one left to find was Mesec.

He'd figured he'd look on the water first, because his knowledge of Mesec included a shared affection for the ocean. The water was so high, and at first Zero'd laughed as he splashed along with it, slate hooves sinking into damp sand and spray soaking his metallic left side. But the salt made the metal itch so bad, and the boy'd been driven back from the water's edge to the safety of the shore, where he wandered on, leaving flakes of titanium behind to glitter in the sand. Squishy followed along behind him, casually picking up the abandoned bits of his master and sticking them to himself.

In the distance he could see a large black shape swooping and diving among the waves. He'd never seen a black seabird before. Curious, the brown boy walked towards it, eager to discover what it might have caught. What's it like, he wondered, to be a seabird- to fly above the waves and swoop back down into the water, catching fish and riding coastal winds? It must be awesome. The boy's bright expression darkened and envy pricked within him at this thought, a bitter awareness that he really should be able to do it, too, it was his birthright, if only his stupid wing had been there, too.

Zero's jovial mood might have been shattered, then, except- well, who am I kidding? It took a lot more than his missing wing to ruin Zero's attitude.

But the appearance of Mesec helped cheer him, too.

"Mesec!" the lightning boy cried brightly, though his voice came out surprisingly deep- almost in a croak. He paused, blinking in surprise at the noises he was making, before shaking his head and continuing on. Now that Mesec was within his sight a brilliant lopsided grin filled Zero's face, and he was nearly bouncing with excitement. "I was lookin' for you 'cus I gots you somethin'- here!"

He stopped within touching distance of the stallion and reached around to where Squishy stood. Just wait until Mesec saw this! Zero wrestled with his prize, clearly struggling to dislodge something from the golem's back, before finally spinning triumphantly to face Mesec, his creation clutched between smiling teeth. Gingerly he set it on the ground, letting it reveal its full glory: small, black, with six spindly-shaped legs stretching out from it and one long and firm claw rising from the middle. Made of glittery black sand around a skeleton of gold, and inlaid with carefully designed titanium, little golem was barely the size of Zero's head, but it was certainly a work of art. The titanium (drawn from the boy's own skin, he'll have you know) swirled in lightning bolts down every leg, drawing together at the center and making an elegant crescent moon around the extending claw. The claw itself was jointed, nimble and prehensile, and made almost entirely with titanium.

He'd had a lot of time while waiting for his wing to heal, and this was the result.

And it was beautiful.

Sunbeam eyes returned to his friend, and the young craftsman beamed, feeling very proud.

The croak of a voice that called out his name startled Mesec but when he looked towards the sound a warm grin took over. “Hey Zero!” Funny, how he had just made up his mind to find the one that just happened to find him today. Zero was growing rapidly, his newly-forming deep voice a sure sign of that. Mesec quickly moved over to meet his friend, head tilted as he tried to figure out just what the colt was doing. Wrestling something small and dark off of… something a little larger that had been following Zero. He was trying to figure out what they were when the smaller thing was placed on the ground and the beaming smile of his friend taken in, it finally registered that this was a gift. “This is for me?” He couldn’t help but be a little surprised - looking back and forth between Zero and the golem to make sure that he got it right.

“You made these? They’re amazing!” His gaze flickered to the other golem that had been following Zero around and he was absolutely astounded. He had seen crafters, and how Isopia could make shapes out of rocks that resembled dragons and other things, but he had never seen anything quite like this before. It actually moved. It reminded him of the sentinel that he had seen up in the Basin but the little golem was created from earthen things, with a little bit of titanium flare.

He lowered his head to get a closer look at the amazing contraption, having no idea what it was for but finding that it didn’t matter - his gratitude was genuine. It was so detailed, six legs and a claw - reminding him a little bit of the crabs that would scuttle across the beach here at low tide - but with a gold skeleton covered in shiny black sand. It must have taken Zero a lot of time to get those little lightning patterns on the legs. “Thank you so much! You are quite the crafter.” Lifting his head again, he beamed back at Zero - reaching out to give him a little nudge with his muzzle. It was good to see that his friend was looking so proud and having every reason to be.

Lucius, curious about the smaller brown and blue creature that was talking to Mesec - and always curious about those that talked to his bonded that didn’t spark some sort of sadness within him - had turned away from his game of hunting sea creatures to move toward the pair. Now, instead of keeping an eye from the sky or perching on Mesec’s back he landed right on the ground, eager to inspect this new… thing. “Food?” The zephyr inquired hopefully, but Mesec just shook his head in response.

Frowning, Lucius tilted his head and continued to stare at the golem while Mesec turned his attention back to Zero. “I hope you didn’t get in too much trouble from your mom when you guys got back here?”

The wash of anticipation which covered Zero's face quickly gave way to proud delight. A Cheshire grin stretched across the boy's face, broad enough that it threatened to overtake his ears, and he ruffled his wing, preening as Mesec praised his work. People tended to overlook Squishy, who was a messy first attempt anyway, raw and unrefined- Zero had become something of a perfectionist since his creation's conception, and seeing his friend's awe made all the hours and hours of sweat (very little) and exhaustion (he'd actually slept quite well while he healed) the lightning boy'd poured into his work brought a singular satisfaction to the one-winged child.

But he wasn't even close to being done showing off. "Thanks!" he beamed in response to Mesec's praise, dancing eagerly in the sand, his tailfeathers wriggling. "But you don' even know all it'll do yet- I'll show you on Squishy!" In a flash of blue and black Zero ran to stand behind his ever patient golem, staring down at Squishy who in turn stared at Mesec through impassive emerald eyes. Like a commander to his troops Zero began to give orders, lopsided grin never leaving his face as his little monstrosity obeyed. "Squishy, go t'the water." The golem did, somewhat reluctantly. "Squishy, come back." The golem returned.

"Squishy, ATTACK THAT PLANT!" the boy exclaimed, gesturing wildly toward an innocent bush some five feet away, his head shaking dramatically as he indicated his target. What followed was an abrupt ZAAAAAAP! of electricity, a small brush fire, and a lot of smoke. "Squishy, put that out!" Zero instructed at last, and the golem toddled off to roll himself upon the fire while its lunatic inventor laughed and laughed, narrow sides heaving with the force of his mirth.

The pride he felt at his creation's skills was nothing compared to the shocking pleasure when Mesec reached out to brush him with his muzzle. A sudden warm bashfulness overcame the boy, and he mumbled something vaguely inaudible - "It'scusyou'regreatan'IwannabeacrafterwhenIgrowuptoo" - while his sunbeam eyes remained transfixed on Mesec's hooves. Was he blushing? Why? Confused, the boy backed up a step, unable to distinguish the source of this new happiness he felt.

(One day he'd recognize that it was because, for the first time, a stallion had praised him- and that this was what having a father was supposed to feel like, and it felt overall quite good)

Luckily for Zèklè, the big black sea bird chose that moment to swoop down and land on Mesec's back. Zero jumped with alarm that quickly transformed into eager curiosity- "What's that?" he demanded of his friend, peering wondrously at the marvelous bird. "I never saw'd a bird that big! He's so cool! Is he your 'panion? What's his name?" The questions came in a speedy torrent, drowning the special uncertainty of the moment before. Zero latched onto this new turn of events eagerly, pleased to push away the strange emotions which had risen at Mesec's touch.

Finally the boy's smile faded, flipping into what was almost a frown. "Not a lot," Zero confided, staring up at Mesec through young eyes. He remembered Ma's stress after the fight, and how she'd talked to Gaucho when she thought he was asleep, and worry began to carve new, unfamiliar lines in his brow. "But I think Ma's worried 'bout me, an' she talk'd 'bout quittin' bein' Gladiator, an'... I dunno. I think she's been sad." Zero's voice was heavy with a rare and deep concern, a childish need to fix things for the person who mattered most in his life. He wondered, somewhat, if Mesec could help. Maybe if he'd been his Da, he would have made Ma happier than Gaucho did... the idea gave him a strange thrill, and the beginning of a seed began to root within his young and malleable mind.

Mesec loved the golem when he thought it was a beautifully crafted six legs and a claw, something neat that could move around, but he soon discovered that was only just the start of it. Zero was eager to show off the other things that the golem could do and Mesec watched in awe as he commanded around the other golem - Squishy. Watching the demonstration from Squishy only made him appreciate the workmanship even more - laughing as the clay creature seemed reluctant to follow orders but followed through all the same.

And he couldn’t help but jump when 'ATTACK THAT PLANT' was shouted, followed by a zap of electricity that sent the offending plant into a blaze. It was quickly trampled out by the claw creature at the command of its maker.  “No way!” He joined in Zero’s laughter, though his was more out of delight than the manic laughter of his friend. He eyed the crab-like golem by his feet with even more appreciation now, knowing what it could do. “Does mine have a name?”

Zero mumbled something in response to Mesec’s praise - he caught the words ‘great’ and ‘crafter’ but not much else, though the bashfulness of the yearling seemed plain. At least, that was what Mesec hoped was causing the reaction - he felt bad when Zero stepped back, hoping that he hadn't made the yearling feel uncomfortable.

Lucius swooping in provided a change of subject - the silver-lined stallion grinning at Zero’s reaction, a volley of questions. “Yeah, this is Lucius. He’s a zephyr” Lucius dipped his head at the colt in greeting, appreciating the compliments that had been given - fluffing out his feathers in happiness. As far as he was concerned, Mesec needed more friends like this kid and fewer like the pesky mares he seemed to enjoy surrounding himself with. “He likes you.” Mesec translated, laughing and shaking his head at his proud companion who took this opportunity to hop down from the black wings where he had rested and onto the ground between the two horses. His crowned head tilted from side to side as silver and violet eyes examined Zero and the creatures the yearling created.

His own smile faded with Zero’s replaced by a fresh wash of concern for Ampere. She had been sad the last time he had seen her, but that had been because she had just bonded. But if she was talking about giving up her role as Gladiator, maybe it went deeper than the bond. “Yeah, I think you’re right.” He had thought that she was at least feeling a little bit better after their… conversation, but Mesec shared in Zero’s worry for the lightning mare. “Maybe we can do something for her to cheer her up?”

"His name's whatever y'want it to be!" Zero exclaimed, expertly sidestepping responsibility for naming the black crab creature. Which, really, Mesec should have been grateful for. To date, the boy had named two things - his golem and himself - both with rather questionable results. Leave it to Zero, and Mesec may have had to shout his commands to Blackie, or Night Claw, or Death Stone Destroyer the Great Electric Beast!

So really, Mesec, best name it yourself.

It was hard for the lightning boy to feel uncomfortable for more that a moment's flash. Bashfulness, awkwardness, the space between them when he stepped away- they were all forgotten as the big bird preened, his silver-black feathers glittering in the sunlight. Zero stared in abject admiration at Lucius, jumping back with a quiet "Oh!" as the massive bird dropped down into the sand. Violet eyes met his own inquisitive sunbeam ones- Zero'd never seen a companion quite so impressive before, though he had to admit that Vorsa came pretty close. And Hubris, Hubris was cool. And Bird and Natraj, of course. And... well... ok, maybe all companions were pretty cool.

But Lucius was definitely one of the coolest.

Zero kept his eyes on the bird as he waited for Mesec's reply, frowning when the stallion agreed with him- because yeah, he knew he was right. Agreeing didn't help. Slate hooves pawed restlessly at the sand as the boy's frown deepened, the issue of his Ma's sadness almost too much for Zero's sunny disposition to handle. But then Mesec suggested cheering her up, and his frown began to change, to soften from sadness into curiosity- "Like what?" he demanded hopefully, letting his gaze turn back to Mesec's face. "Maybe a party? Though I dunno a lot'a people. An' that might be hard. Plus e'ryone has 'panions, an' seein' that might just make her upset."

Never let it be said that the boy did not know his Ma.

He carried on, considering further, but the more he talked the darker his face grew. "I wanted to make her a golem, but I can' make one good enough. An' I know she wants me to be stronger, but I dunno how to do that an' I've been trying... maybe if I could fly she'd be less worried..."

And the boy trailed off, voice suddenly choking, body closing in on itself as his wing instinctively wrapped around to cover the place where his shoulder lay metallic and bare. He spun his face away from Mesec, staring angrily at the sea, willing himself to pull it together because there was nothing he could do, because he was broken and wingless and he'd never be able to fly, so he'd better pull himself together right now and think of something else.

“Well in that case I’m going to have to think on it. I’ll try to come up with something really good.” Mesec didn’t even know where to begin to start thinking up names. Lucius had been easy - the moonlight markings that had shone on the zephyr when he was a chick and the brilliance of his egg. Maybe he’d be inspired as he had been with his companion.

The idea of cheering Ampere up was one they both agreed on but just how to do that was more complicated than Mesec thought. “Yeah, she was pretty upset with me…” Lucius bristled at the memory, his feathers standing on end and Mesec’s eyes trailed to him before looking back to Zero. “But yeah, maybe a party wouldn’t be such a good idea.”

Mesec had just been thinking how a golem would be a great idea - how he could help Zero find some blue gems and maybe some silver and more of the black sand that had gone into his - but further thoughts about what they could do to cheer Ampere up came to a grinding halt as Zero continued to speak.

He hadn’t known that the lack of a wing had been a sore-point for the colt and it hurt to watch his friend try to cover up that side, to turn away. Instincts Mesec didn’t know he had encouraged him forward and, providing Zero didn’t move away, he went to wrap his neck around Zero’s and bring up a silver-lined wing to drape across the lightning colt. As though a hug could protect him from the thoughts Mesec feared were racing around that bright mind. “Zero, you shouldn’t think like that. It’s okay to not be able to fly, it doesn’t make you weaker than anyone else.”

“And you know what? I don’t think you not being able to fly plays into it. I bet your mom would worry about you whether you had five wings or just the awesome one that you have. That’s what moms do.” He imagined that being a parent just came with worry, constant and intense. Even if Zero was the most accomplished fighter in all of Helovia, Ampere would still find something to worry about.

Mesec pulled back then so he could look at his friend better, wondering if there was anything he could say that would actually help, or if he was just prattling on. He wasn’t good at this, he had no experience to fall back on for this situation. There were instincts, yes, a desire for a family that was new and he felt protective of the colt. There was a sudden rush of annoyance at the Throat for being predominantly populated by pegasi - he’d have to look elsewhere for examples to dispute the idea that being able to fly would have equalled strength. “But you know, my dad didn’t have any wings, and he was strong - my sis Roskuld, she’s the daughter of the Spark God and she’s short and flightless. Only don’t tell her I said that though because she might run me through with her horn.” A smile played onto Mesec's face again at the thought of his spunky little sister. She literally would - she had tried it before.  “Maybe you and I can do some training? It just takes time but we can surprise you mom with how strong you’re getting. Being able to fly helps with some stuff, yeah, but it's not everything, not even close.”
