Ashamin pulled away from her and felt different. His sides heaved, his coat was soaked in sweat, but this was not the same exertion of battle. Was there anything tender in the moments, still? Was it anything but instinct?
When her body moved from hers, when her blue eyes caught his own, he felt fear. Something rooting itself in the pit of his stomach and heart, something dangerous, something that would grow. How had that felt, to her? What had it meant? He moved to touch her, to press his nose to her cheek as he did so many others, and exhaled softly. Her scent was too strong for him to risk breathing it in again.
Something, something had overtaken them both.
Her mention of a healer snapped him back to reality. He saw her wounds, remembered the motion that had overtaken them first: the spar. How had they ended up here? No, he couldn't dwell. She needed a healer, she was bleeding all over the place for goodness sakes.
The haruspex wouldn't let her wander alone, or at all, like this. "Don't stress yourself, you need to rest," he said gently, responsibly, as he caught his breath and refocused his mind. "Lochan--" he turned to the cerndyr, cast him away with a nod of his head, watching as the companion went "--will find a healer for you. I'll stay here with you, I'll hold you up."
And it was true, he would. He'd do all he could to keep her standing strong.
