I'LL BE YOUR NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET
a loaded god complex, cock it and pull it
There'd been a lot of things happening recently, and if we're being totally honest, Zero wasn't sure he liked them all. Like: suddenly, without anyone telling him or asking how he felt, he was a big brother. And, y'know, for the most part that was cool. He liked watching the girls wobble around, liked the proud feeling that filled him when he looked down and saw his baby sisters, even if they were a little (a lot) weird. Like, really really weird- and he couldn't say why, exactly, but there was definitely something unsettling about the way they seemed so interested in bones and dead things. Must be Gaucho's influence.

(an opinion that only served to deepen his uncertainty regarding his own parentage, because why else would he and the girls be so different?)

And the worst part was, he couldn't talk to Ma about it. It was the first problem in his short life he couldn't bring to her, because after all, what was he gonna say? "Hey, Ma, how come the last couple babies you pooped out are so, I dunno, weird? Is it maybe something you ate?" Besides, it's not like he really had room to talk.

At least they both had two wings.

While all he had was the metal still growing out of his side. He'd been itching at it, pulling flakes off from where it had stretched over to his hip and making a neat little pile of titanium in the sand. It was the same color as the dawn-lit ocean: the ocean he'd been born beside, here at the far southern point of the Throat.

Zero loved the ocean, and spent a lot of time at the bottom of the island, searching for rocks and daydreaming about the animals who lived within the depths. He wished he could fly over it, or even better, under it- he wanted to meet Pushta the whale again and ask him more questions. Maybe there were more whales! Did Pushta have a family? The idea of baby whales made him grin, and that's how Ma found him, smiling in the dawn, sunbeam eyes staring intently into the foggy grey sea, as though he thought that if he stared high enough, he might just be able to see through the water and into the depths.

Ampere's voice made her son jump and whirl around, lopdised grin growing brighter as an embarassed flush rose into his cheeks. "Hey, Ma!" Zero called brightly, furtively kicking sand over the pile of silver skin: he knew how much Ma hated his defect, and felt no need to draw more attention to it, now that she had a set of twins with perfect wings. "What're we beginnin'?" A flicker of uncertainty flashed across his face. Was he about to get a lecture on how to be a better brother, or on not leaving the Throat so much, or being better about guard and patrol duty (something he was, to be fair, abysmal at), or...? He swallowed. There were so many things.

But the happiness in Zero's deepening voice and sunbeam eyes was real, because no matter what else, his Ma was here (just her) to spend time with him (just him), for maybe the first time since he'd broken his wing. He grinned down at his shorter (hahahaHAHAHAHSUCKIT!) Ma, tailfeathers fluttering merrily in the ocean breeze. And sure, a lot had happened since then. But no matter what, none of it could ever come between the boy and his unfailing love for Ampere the Lightning Mare, Best Fighter and Best Ma this side of the Zerrific Sea.
