The bat had vanished suddenly, with short sentences and an explanation of duties the stallion now had to perform. It left behind a tiny pup, which Vayu now found himself staring at in some dismay. He had flown them both up to the Heavenly Fields, for he thought it might prove to be a good hunting ground; but now that he was here, he had no idea how to proceed. In all of Vayu's life he had never willingly struck down another creature, except in spars and self defense. But now, now he had a little mouth to feed, and that mouth seemed to desire blood.

He set the pup down on the branch of an evergreen, promising to come back for it soon, and turned to the field, determination in his eyes. A rustle to his left caught the stallion's attention, the movement of the tall grass alerting him to some small thing's presence. Swiftly, forcefully, the stallion threw his left foreleg towards the ground, willing the wind to pick up around him. He was rewarded with a knee-high spindle of air, which he sent off towards the movement, hoping it would catch the animal and prevent escape. At the same time, he raised himself into a rear, preparing to crash down on top of the poor beast and claim it as his prize.

The beast in question, a rabbit, is caught up in your miniature twister and is helpless to escape when your hooves come crashing down upon it, killing it instantly.

The golden pegasus cringed as his hooves met bone, the snap of impact sending a shudder through his body. Still, he could not let the new life that had been entrusted to his care go hungry. He picked up the dead rabbit in his mouth and carried it to the tree where his pup hung, laying it on the ground.

Next, Vayu looked to his right, seeking more movement. From the corner of his eye he spotted a ground squirrel scurrying about in the shorter grass, digging for some lost treasure. With a guilty gulp, he inched towards, and threw his hooves onto the earth. The twister that emerged was narrow and tall, and Vayu willed it taller, three of him high, before killing it with his mind. He hoped the little creature would have been caught in it before falling to its doom. He had no desire to actually kill again.

The ground squirrel is caught up in the twister, but its weight partially counteracts the wind, so it does not fall as far in the end. It lands awkwardly, stunned and hurt, but still tries to crawl away.

The squirrel fell, but luck was not on Vayu's side, for it raised itself up again. The stallion had learned that magic was not as reliable as he might have wished; now, he feared that he would have to finish the job himself. As the little creature staggered away, Vayu pursued it, catching up easily. He poised his hoof to crush the thing's head before sending it slamming down. At the very least he could make the squirrel's death as quick and painless as possible, even if he did deliver the killing blow.

Your blow is swift and merciful, blotting out the life of the ground squirrel.

Another life taken, another corpse delivered. Vayu's heart was heavy, but he was not yet done, and after leaving this, too, in his pile, he trotted off towards the south. He had only gone a few paces before a soft chattering caught his attention. It was coming from behind a bush, and Vayu walked towards it nervously, ears alert for any sign that his query might run. He nudged away the bush to find a small nest, with a mass of baby garter snakes inside. Despite his initial revulsion at the sight of them, Vayu clenched his eyes and inhaled deeply before stomping down on the nest.

The nest is disturbed by your violent assault, tiny snakes scattering every which way. Save one, who is slithering slower than the rest, wounded by your stomp but not yet dead.

The sight that met Vayu's eyes was not the massacre he'd anticipated. Rather, all but one snake had fled his assault, and that last was dragging itself from him slowly. Without thinking, (for he had decided that if he thought too hard he would vomit), Vayu ran at the snake, missed, and slammed found himself standing above it. He raised his right hind and smacked it down, hoping to stomp the life out of the wounded reptile before it could change course.

The snake is flattened beneath your blow, and shall slither no more.

The taste of blood was tangy, Vayu discovered, and not at all pleasant. He carried the snake in his mouth, making his way back to the evergreen; but partway there, he spotted a black and white mound moving through the brush. Vayu dropped the snake a few feet from the tree before turning to approach the badger. It did not seem to have seen him, or so he thought; a length from it, he stopped, tensed his muscles, and then, using his wings to propel his body forward, sprung at the burrowing creature.

Distracted by its digging, the badger is unsuspecting of a potential attack and falls prey to your trampling hooves. It dies quickly.

The badger was heavy, and Vayu found himself panting as he dragged its carcass back to the tree, the smell of death stinging his nostrils. Having deposited it into the growing pile of slain beasts, the pegasus righted himself and sighed. He wasn't sure how much more he could do, how many more animals he needed to kill. Surely only one more. How much could one tiny bat want?

There was a sound, a light chirping behind him, and Vayu spun about. On the ground stood a rat, head tilted curiously, whiskers twitching. This, he could deal with. With a beat of his wings, Vayu brought up another small tornado, sending it flying towards the rat. Then, he changed its direction, bringing it to his left, where it caught some small stones that littered the ground. Hopefully the wind would cause the stones to crash into the rodent and kill it. Vayu called the wind back, shoving it down into a light breeze before letting it go and venturing over to inspect his prey.

The rat tries to flee the path of the tornado, but is caught up and tumbled against the rocks. Fortunately for the rat, it is merely stunned, and lays panting on the rocks.

The rat didn't die, and Vayu cursed his ill luck, almost laughing at it. Once more, he would have to strike a creature down. Why did he bother? he wondered, brows furrowed as he eyed the fallen rat. Then he thought of the tiny bat, so sweet and innocent, and remembered. He now had a life to protect.

He raised his hoof to strike again, body tensed and face full of apology. Then with a woosh, he brought it down, hoping, again, that death would come quickly.

The rat doesn't stand a chance, and is crushed.

The rat fell beneath his hooves, a broken mass of torn flesh and bone. Vayu was done. This had to be enough. Grabbing the rodent, he dragged it back to the tree, back to his new friend, and deposited it in the pile. Then, gently, he reached out his soft nose to the bat, cooing gently and reassuringly. It was so small; his heart went out to the child with no mother. He knew what it was like to be a small colt in a large rookery.

Gently, Vayu lowered the pup to the pile of carcasses, setting it down on the badger. He wasn't quite sure what would happen now. The thing seemed too small to feed on meat, but then, Vayu was no carnivore.
