He no longer wobbled when he walked, or fumble over as many words.

The boy had grown well, his horn beginning to grow into a point and the red upon his neck and elbows was showing more prominence each day. With his growth came more challenging aspects of his foalhood, one being his need for adventure. The Basin was feeling smaller and smaller to the quickly growing boy, despite his own tiny size.

But his mother understood. He found it remarkable, really, and was ecstatic to venture past the Basin's border, past the Steppe. They traveled to the Threshold first, a place of great verdant and looming trees. He stuck by his mother's side for the most part, only occasionally straying a foot or two from her every now and then.

They stopped to rest, to drink, though Rein couldn't understand why. They took many breaks when he didn't need them, although he didn't consider his mother's state, and was perhaps a bit too vain to admit any fatigue he might have. So, he went along with his mother, drinking for a moment, for her. He stopped, observing his surroundings for a moment, pausing when he saw something rare for the season: a butterfly.

It was orange with black stripes and perhaps the most intriguing creature he had seen to date. He slipped from his mother's side, following the butterfly deeper into the forest, and farther from Rexanna. He didn't take much notice of the lack of his mother, though, for he had come to assume she would always be near, even if he couldn't see her.

Rein soon came to find that butterflies can, in fact, fly faster than a boy, even when he was cantering at full speed. It simply flitted away, into the sky, and away from him. His frolicking stopped, his breathing hard from the exertion. He almost regretted not taking a longer sip from that creek.

He sighed to himself, looking over his shoulder to find his mother hadn't followed. He furrowed his small, golden brow, perplexed by her absence, but not concerned by it. She would arrive soon, he knew she would. He was comforted by these thoughts and let them linger in his head, striding forward confidently. His mother didn't have to be around for the adventure to continue.

His ears pricked forward, straining against their hold on his golden head. He heard noises. "Mommy?" Rein called, voice full of innocence and exuberance. He smiled, surprised that she had gotten ahead of him. Had she gotten lost? Amused by the thought, he quickened his pace, a sneaky grin plastered to his lips. Silly Mommy! He burst into the clearing, finding the stream he was at a few moments ago and a horse.

"Hi, Mommy! How did you get ahead..of.." His words trailed off upon the seeing the horse, his head falling to one side in confusion. "You're not.." he murmured, squinting his eyes at the horse. This was not his Mommy. This horse had weird stripes and was a weird color and a weird height and also, was a guy.

He took a few moments to comprehend the situation, his deep, azure gaze staring at the stallion introspectively. But once he had figured it out to the best of his abilities, his features brightened, a cherry smile returning to his lips. This wasn't his Mommy, but he could be his friend instead.

"I thought you were my Mommy," Rein giggled, prancing closer to the stallion, trotting a large circle around him. He sure was big. "If you're not my Mommy, then who are you?" He questioned, pausing his prancing once he had made a complete 360. He retained a quizzical gaze and a naive grin, excited to learn more of this potential friend.
