Tembovu & Mwebene
Ears twitched and gaze rose to Kiuaji’s outcropping, navy eyes following the streaming golden tail up to the delicately perched serpent. Though, where he usually would join his close friend’s laughter, only the smallest of twitches of his lips belied having felt his laughter. “It seems as though you have found yourself a lifelong friend.” Tembovu blinked at his words. Yes, little Mbwene’s soul was now tethered to the darkness of his. Forever.

And then his numbness left him with savage quickness.

Guilt, shame, fear— they all flooded his mind. How could he turn on his friend— the first to provide a home and a purpose to him in Helovia? How could he burn him alive? A small sound, the low whine of a soft trumpet, called from the newborn calf. Life was so new, sights and sounds overwhelming— but this sudden influx of dark emotion swamped the calf. She didn’t know what it was or what it meant, though his made her ears sag and trunk fall limp to the ground.

She had just been getting the hang of moving it where she wanted, and now she couldn’t even lift it in the face of these emotions. Light blue eyes, slowly focusing on things around her, peered up the thick leg she leaned against, another whimper coming from her trunk. Navy eyes leave Kiuaji, unwilling to let his friend see the darkness he knows the serpent will recognize; instead they stare down at Mbwene, “It seems I have.” Low and quiet, his tone was heavy.

He sighed, willing the wall back into place between the darkness and his bonded. It wouldn’t last long, but it was enough to keep her free of his shadows until she could eat and adjust to this new world. Lowering his head, he gently lipped a small shard of egg that was stuck behind her once-again flapping ears— which earned a brassy squeak from the creature before she tottered off to learn more of her stumpy legs.

“Were you following me, Aji?” The question was quiet, wondering if his friend had seen the deadly rage that had burst from his chest and burned Mauja. Despite addressing the poisoner, his eyes remained on Mbwene.

But they were interrupted by a third equine— a pale pegasus mare of slender stature and delicate frame. Her coat was white, almost glowing in the dim, green light. Though there was nothing threatening about her (in fact, just the opposite), the Elephant shifted slightly in front of his new companion. Perhaps feeling excessively protective given the wreckage he had just left. Cobalt eyes flicker to the stormy zephyr that lands on her withers, a lopsided smile answering her own. Though it was difficult for the smile to mask the sad darkness of his eyes.

His ears tilt forward to listen to her soft, musical words. “Thank you, she is Mbwene,” the small elephant trumpeted and turned her head towards them. That ’Mbwene’ sound meant something important to her, when the big and rumbling voice said it. A flicker of light sliced through the darkness of his gaze as he watched her, before turning to look back at the winged woman, “And I am Tembovu, of the World’s Edge,” his eyes flick to Kiuaji, allowing him to introduce himself, “Who do I have the pleasure of meeting?”
