It was difficult to discern what time of day it was. The gloomy canopy of the pine washed away the sun’s rays like a stain on the earth’s face. The trees here told stories of events long-since pastthe very brush itself appeared as though it had been here ages before equine-kind. The ground was shady, damp and grassless. Fern and horsetail protruded from the soil, growing as tall and menacing as a wolf. The thick trunks of the evergreens refused to groan in the late-season breeze—no, these monstrous witnesses were far too hardy for that. They made no sound, save for the steady rustling of their leaves high above the reach of any grounded beast. Meanwhile, down below, all was quiet.

Amid the emerald glow of the lush undergrowth, a stocky frame shuffled through the shadows. He aimed his course toward the heart of the forest. He’d heard tell that a pool rested at its center, and so he sought out this curious-sounding place. The stallion felt as though he were a ghost, wandering through the darkness of the afterlife, yet somehow he felt at home in it. Elecampane had spent the past year exploring the nooks and crannies of Helovia, a land which he’d happen to stumble upon in his third year of life.

The brute always been rather odd and solitary. He enjoyed finding his way into preposterous situations, and making discoveries or realizations through all sorts of bizarre experiences. He was still young and allowed his heart to lead him on his adventures. He had been over the fear of loneliness for quite some time now, and it made the world a mysterious and wonderful playground in which Ele could lose himself. Of course, this behavior was not without its downfalls, but in its entirety, it was a life well-suited to the equid.

Turning a corner, the stag found himself gazing across a small glen. Moss covered the forest floor, giving the ground a veridian pelt, and the sound of trickling water reverberated around the area. A few good-sized boulders bordered a body of glimmering liquid. Ele sighed with contentment, and made his way over to the pool. He’d first heard of this spot a few months ago, and wanted to see what sort of intrigue the place had to offer. He loved the little, woody dell, where it seemed corruption had forgotten to drag its talons. Seeing it was like glimpsing a dove in the moonlight—an awe-inspiring sight in which rarity met beauty in the most divine way. How the unicorn lived for these moments!

Ele walked over to the pool, and pressed his lips to the glassy surface. The water tasted as pure as that from a mountain spring, and refreshing as a birdsong breeze. So, he drank to his fill, then lifted his head to look around once more. A flash of red caught his eye, as a cardinal fluttered past, chattering as it went. The wind picked up, and rustled Ele’s mane, causing the three silver rings to clank against each other. All was peaceful, and apart from the fowl and flying folk, it seemed he was alone.
