"Oh whoa Ma this is so cool!"

Zero had a couple reasons for coming along on the outing. First was The Incident. Ever since The Incident the boy'd been trying to keep an eye on his little family, especially the girls and Ma (because honestly he wasn't really sure who else his family was, like did Gaucho and Mesec even count?). He'd always known the girls were a little different, a little too independent and eager to run away and drive poor Ma crazy (something HE, of course, had never done- except that one time, of course). After The Incident, well... let's just say Zero had never seen his Ma that angry (except, again, that one time), and wasn't interested in having it happen again.

The second reason was that loved to do things with Ma, and so when he found out she was taking the girls out, he positively leaped at the opportunity to come along. And maybe he felt a little bad, because him being there meant that Ma and the girls couldn't fly- but only a little because, as he'd been telling himself recently, there was an awful lot to find on the ground, and if you spent all your time in the air you'd just wind up missing it all.

Plus with them all on the ground it would be much easier to keep an eye on them all.

Finally, of course, was the simple fact that he loved to adventure and see new places and things. That was a given, always, no matter what. And this place, well... this place was super awesome, in a weird, kind of not really real way that the boy found fascinating. "Whoa!" Zero exclaimed again, sunbeam eyes wide as his head twisted upon his spine, his body and brain locked in a desperate struggle to take in everything all at once. "I didn't know trees could even grow like this! What makes 'em do that, Ma? What kinda trees are they? Did the other gods bring 'em over? Didja fight a god here, like the- oomph!"

The boy was so caught up in his curiosity that he didn't realize his Ma had stopped until he bumped against her stalled rump, the impact silencing him instantly. Zero peered curiously around his mother's body, trying to see what had captivated her so- and what he saw made his stomach drop out a little and his mouth go dry with a sudden, visceral concern. A companion! Sunbeam eyes darted urgently between the tall unicorn and the electric blue mare, looking for any sign of Ampere's infamous temper. This was terrible- no, catastrophic! Because Zero just knew this was about to become exactly what he'd wanted to avoid: a fight.

(But wow, that snake was cool!)

In fact, he was so sure that he didn't even stop to think about the fact that Ma didn't really sound particularly angry, or even loud, and that it might be a good sign. If anything her unnatural quiet only raised his concern, and the boy pushed forward brazenly, a broad and perhaps overzealous smile on his face as he tried to avert something he was sure was only a minute away from being a catastrophe. "Hi!" the now-grown boy exclaimed, his voice horribly loud in the wake of Ampere's quiet one. "I'm Zero and, uh..." the boy floundered, mouth moving uselessly, suddenly realizing that all of his potential conversation topics were horribly inappropriate. Helpless and desperate he glanced at his Ma, and then the tiny - so tiny! - and fascinating snake that was wrapped around a horn, and then at the stranger who belonged to said horn. He seemed like a nice unicorn, and definitely didn't deserve to have Ma go all no-companions-crazy on him.

So Zero strengthened his grin and his good intentions, plunging forward with all the well-meaning valiance of a child. "...and that's a really cool snake! Do you know what it wants its name to be yet? I think that's probably the first part about having a companion and a friend- helping it learn its name."

And the boy looked hopefully at his mother, hoping that he hadn't made things a million times worse. Because if he couldn't find a good way to change the subject, at least he could offer some helpful advice, right?
