M U R T A G H Murtagh knew he was supposed to sleep on his feet like the grown-ups did, just in case trouble arose, but he just didn’t like it all that much. He prefered to sprawl out on the ground, with or without the company of all the bears in the area and maybe even a mother or two. Ktulu was often patrolling through and try as Murtagh might, he still had not successfully stayed away long enough to accompany her on the patrols. Sometimes he tried to stay up just to prove that he could, only to fall asleep for a couple of hours. One day when he was as big and strong as his mothers he’d be able to help protect the herd and his family. For now, the nights demanded sleep. At dawn when he woke, after stretching luxuriously and rolling around happily on his bed of leaves before opening his eyes, he received a surprise. “MAMMINA!” The squeal of delight wiggled from the colt as he struggled onto his feet and trotted merrily out of the little copse of trees he liked the sleep in. Outside of it, where he had been fascinated by the sight of green just a few seasons ago, there was a soft blanket of white - fresh and glistening and beautiful. Fat, fluffy flakes were falling lazily from the sky and he bucked happily beneath them - doing his best impression of the happy noise that Aodaun makes when Murtagh tries to tell him a joke. “It’s snowing again!” This was his world again, the one he had been born into a year ago, and if he had known that this meant he was a year old (the concept of time passing was lost on the colt) then he would have thought this fresh snowfall to be a very fine birthday present! |
