Najya slept that night on the salt flats, curled around the egg that had been entrusted to her to keep it warm.  The sand and salt retained much more heat than the bitter winter air blowing in off the sea.  But the little mare hardly felt the cold, and she made sure that the egg felt none of it at all. She’d been too nervous to move the egg last night without a cloak or something to carry it in properly.  That and the fact she’d be even more nervous to carry it across the sea on the wings of flame necessary to get back to the Throat.

She woke as soon as the sun crept across the horizon painting the morning sky with every color she could imagine.  You could hardly see where salt and sand met sea and sky.  It was strange to think of such a peaceful scene unfolding in a land that had been birthed in blood.  Helovia had paid a hefty price for these flats, and Najya held a hefty appreciation for that sacrifice.  She hesitated to stand as the chill remained even as the sun climbed higher into the sky.

The little mare let out a soft sigh.  When she had left the Throat yesterday morning, she hadn’t imagined this is where she’d end up.  She looked at the egg, softly nestled against her side, again wondering what it contained.  Her hazel eyes flicked from the egg to the horizon – watching the point not too far off where the Flats slipped into the sea.  It was then that she felt it.  Movement.

Her curved ears pricked as she craned her neck around to look at the egg, which had indeed moved. She watched as a small crack formed across the surface before carefully shifting away from the egg, giving the creature room to free itself.  The first thing she saw was a nose poking through the shell followed shortly by a tiny, distinctly clawed limb.  Curious.  And certainly not avian.  After only a few more moments, the crack widened and, with little grace, a tiny white ball of scales rolled out on to the sand.  Najya’s hazel eyes were met with a pair of warm, gold ones.

A Dragon.  She hadn’t even considered the possibility but this little one wasn’t the first she’d seen.  The little creature let out a little squeak as it rolled around on the earth, experimenting with its limbs for the first time.  The scene caused laughter to spill from Najya’s lips.  Her heart felt lighter than it had since she had left her homeland.

“Come on, Mama! There’s another one!” Everytime the compass found a new heading, Murtagh felt the same rush of excitement he had when he had been given the precious object by the Earth God. Not that he wasn’t getting disheartened a little bit too - he had thought he would have his bear cub by now! But he would keep working until he did, keep trying his best not to lose hope. There were some days when he despaired, sure, but the mind of a child was an easy one to influence and Murtagh’s life had been so blessed he had a hard time staying down for very long.

So he had bullied convinced his babysitter into joining him. The babysitter being, of course, his Papa’s companion that Murtagh still affectionately called ‘Mama’ ever since those first few precious moments where he had thought the male grizzly bear was his mother. The unique family dynamic had been sorted out after that confusion but the nickname remained.

Bear and boy followed the guidance of the compass and Murtagh’s excitement only grew when he started to recognize where they were. Maybe Jiji would be here again! The flats were so cool. He felt like he could run toward the horizon and end up running upside down along the sky!

Maybe he would try later - right now he had work to do. He checked the compass and was so focused on staring at it and angling his heading that he got a shock when he looked up and realized someone was right ahead of him! There was a mare and a… well he didn’t know what it was but it wasn’t a bear. This must be who needed help!

“Cool!” He shouted, moving closer - his lavender eyes bright with a curious smile. “What is it?” His quest (and manners) were temporarily forgotten as Murtagh craned his head to get a better look at the newborn companion.

The little creature felt more comfortable with her limbs. She tested each one individually before extending and retracting her leathery wings.  Najya laughed again, and this time, the dragon turned its golden gaze up to meet hers – looking expectantly at its bonded.  The look of expectation was mirrored by the feeling of expectation that trilled through the mare’s own veins. So this is what it means, being bonded.  How extraordinary.  “I think you need a name, little one,” the mare spoke, soothingly, to the newborn.  But what to name the little dragon?  What to name the creature that had seemingly brought the spark of happiness back to her life.

“A’mal. Hope. Because that’s what you’ve brought me.” she decided, still looking down upon the dragon.  The dragon – A’mal – wiggled her acceptance and the feeling of approval blossomed in Najya’s mind.

It was then that the hunger pains began to tug at her stomach, hunger pains that were not her own.  She knew that A’mal must be hungry after freeing herself from the eggshell, and the dragon let out a squeak in agreement.  She shifted her legs underneath her, and pulled herself to her feet.  The flats certainly wouldn’t be the easiest place to procure a meal for a newborn dragon.

She looked over her shoulder in time to catch sight of two figures approaching quickly, surprised that she hadn’t seen them sooner.  However, with the way the sky met the sand it was easy to obscure the obvious in this strange place. A’mal, curious as to what had drawn Najya’s attention, peeked between the mare’s front legs to get a better view of the strangers – who turned out to be a colt and what looked to be his bear companion.

Najya smiled at the boy, when it was obvious that the pair were no threat, and A’mal let out a squeak of her own. “Why hello there!” she offered the boy, and the bear, in way of greeting.  “It’s a dragon – a brand new one at that.  Her name is A’mal.  And mine is Najya.” she offered, with a little dip of her head.

“What’s your name? Is this your companion?” she asked the boy, offering another soft smile to him and the bear that accompanied him.  Distracted by the pleasantries, hunger again rumbled in Najya’s stomach, drawing her attention back to the dragon – who again let out a little squeak, pleading this time, and looked up at her bonded, abashed.

The little white thing peeked at Murtagh who greeted it with a renewed smile. What a funny little not-bear! He became so busy focusing on making a silly face at the dragon (that’s what you do with babies, right?) that he almost missed it when Najya started talking. His tongue quickly slipped back into his mouth and he looked with wide innocent eyes back up to the hazel eyes of the mare. What did she say? Oh! She asked who he was and if the bear was his companion.

He used to find it funny that everyone thought Eytan was his but he supposed he had travelled Helovia enough with the grizzly bear that it looked kinda like they were bonded. “I’m Murtagh! This is my Papa’s companion, Eytan.” He motioned over to the bear, who was looking at the dragon with a mild sort of curiosity. “I’m on a quest to find my very own bear cub!” Murtagh stated that with pride, his small chest puffing out a little bit. It was a very important quest, after all, and he didn’t want to let the Earth God down.

The mention of the quest, luckily, reminded the colt that he had been directed over here for a reason. “Oh! I bet uh… she?” He squinted his eyes at the small white dragon, as if that would help him figure out whether it was a boy or a girl… but he couldn’t tell and he had already forgotten what Najya had said. “Is hungry! I could help you get some food for it! There’s all these little fish swimming in the water here, perfect for a baby dragon!” He had seen them the last time he was here, brightly coloured fish racing through the shallow waters.

He started dancing on the spot in anticipation of the idea, hoping that Najya would be up for it. It seemed like a foolproof plan to him - though he hadn't even started to think about how they were going to catch the fish. “Well? What do ya think?!”

“It is good to meet you Murtagh,”  she said to the boy, “and you too Eytan,” she added, addressing the bear as well.  A’mal found herself quite curious about these two newcomers.  What an interesting place this new world was.  Feeling no fear from her bonded, A’mal made her way towards the youngster and the bear on still-unsteady legs, weaving between her bonded’s forelegs. This pair certainly didn’t look like her bonded.  Curious golden eyes looked up at the strange protrusion growing from between the boys eyes.  And the bear.  Eytan was a particular source of fascination.

That was until she saw it.

Saw the shining metallic beacon that hung around the boy’s neck.  Her golden eyes locked on the object as the sun’s rays danced across the surface of the compass.  Hunger temporally forgotten, the little dragon released a series of happy clicks and dragon-gurgles as the equines spoke.

Seeing that A’mal was properly entertained, Najya continued, giving Murtagh as close to her full attention as possible.  “A quest! Well then, I’m sure the two of you have been quite busy. I’m sure you’ll have that bear cub soon enough, Murtagh.  And when you do maybe he or she would want to play with A’mal sometime?”  This resulted in more happy noises from A’mal, though she hardly tore her gaze away from the gently swinging compass, nor did the implications of her bonded’s words truly register.

When Murtagh brought up the idea of finding something for A’mal to eat, a smile broke out across the little mare’s lips.  What a clever boy.  It would certainly be an easier task to catch fish with three than trying to do it on her own.  “You’re right about that.  She,” Najya winked at the boy, “Is very hungry indeed!”  At the mention of hunger, A’mal seemed to be drawn from her stupor and looked eagerly between the strange trio of bonded, bear, and boy.  As Murtagh began to dance in place, Amal mimicked his movements, staring intently at his hooves as tiny clouds of sand arose around them.

“I think that’s a perfect idea, and I think I have a plan as to how we could catch some of those little fish too,” she said, conspiratorially, as the idea began to take shape in her head. “What if I use my light magic to draw the fish to one spot, Etyan swipes them out of the water, and you gather them? Sound good?”

She took a few steps towards the nearby seashore before looking back over her shoulder, “It’s worth a try, right?” she added, with a happy laugh, before trotting towards the cerulean waves.  A’mal, discontent to leave her new friend (and his compass behind), spun in two circles, let out a sound akin to a purr, and then too off after her bonded – excited at the prospect of a meal.

Murtagh was utterly delighted with the happy noises that the little dragon was making. He laughed with delight, trying to mimic the noises back to her, the compass around his neck bouncing with his movements.

He hoped Najya was right about getting his bear cub soon and absolutely brightened at the idea of bringing her to play with A’mal! “Yeah! That would be GREAT!” Further dancing from the young colt as he peered closer to the little dragon, mistaking her attention on the compass for attention on him - his lavender eyes shining bright. “You’ll be great friends, won’t you A’mal?!”

Where Murtagh had failed to think of a plan for catching the fish, Najya came up with an AMAZING one! They were going to catch fish! He had never done that before! He had seen Eytan do it before and had been fascinated by the way the bear was able to just catch fish like it was no big deal. “YEAH OKAY!” Najya’s plan seemed foolproof! They could do this, the three of them were going to be a great team! “Come on Eytan!” He managed a strange combination of a growl and whinny toward the bear to catch his attention before bouncing toward the water after Najya and A’mal.

“I see em!!” He pointed out excitedly the small fish that were darting around in the shallow water. They could move fast! But he thought they’d be quick enough to catch them. Especially if they all worked together! Both he and Eytan waded into the warm water - the bear going a little further out, watching the fish as they swam away from these intruding bodies. But with Najya’s light magic - whatever that was - they could make this work!

“Ready when you are, Najya!” He called out to the mare and dragon pair, just barely managing to stay still so that he wouldn't scare off the fish.

A’mal didn’t know much aside from boys and bears aside from the fact that she liked them. Clearly they were great fun and enjoyed playing with dragons.  That checked all the boxes in her book.  She continued with the happy noises, despite the roaring hunger that persisted through the bond, as she danced between the space separating Najya and Murtagh as they made their way to the shoreline.  She raised and lowered her wings, but didn’t attempt to lift her legs from the ground.  It seemed the little dragon was content being earthbound for the time being. As of right now, her only concern was following her bonded and new friends and hopefully obtaining a meal.

Najya wondered if the little dragon would hold a lifelong attachment to children and to bears after not only being exposed to them so shortly after her birth, but having such positive associations with them.  A’mal remained just at the edge of the water, tentatively watching as her friends plunged into the waves.  Even the ankle-deep waters looked daunting to the tiny dragon.  Still, the dragon amused herself in chasing the waves as they crested and receded against the soft sand.

“Okay, here we go!” Najya called out to Murtagh and the bear, seeing that they were in position and A’mal was safely out of harms way.  The dragon stared up at her, expectantly, and Najya conjured tiny fireflies made of light – a memory from a story her mother used to tell her as a child.  She directed the shapes just above the waves where Murtagh had seen the fish, hoping to draw the attention of the creatures below.  Najya stood nearest the shore, so as to not spook the fish, but close enough to have some idea as to what was going on.  With each passing waves she sunk lower into the sand – drawing the intense fascination of the baby dragon.  With a little finesse the light-fireflies plunged beneath the waves dancing enticingly before the little fish.

All she could see were little streaks below the surface – flashes of color beneath the clear waves.  “I think it’s working!” she exclaimed!  She watched as the bear and the boy splashed in the water and A'mal wiggled excitedly on the shore - still copying Murtagh's excited dance. And then the fish started appearing - flopping up on the on the shoreline and shining under the bright sun. A'mal pounced, instinct overcoming excitement, eating the little fish whole while her tail continued to whip around in excitement.  The pleasure at her first meal was entirely overwhelming, and drew a wide smile to Najya's lips.

"Look at that, Murtagh!" Najya said, looking down at the highly satisfied little dragon.  "I couldn't have done that without you.  You and Eytan really saved the day!" she said, rustling the boy's forelock.

Okay Murtagh knew that Najya had light magic but he hadn’t really known what to expect. He suspected that it would be cool but WAS IT EVER! These AMAZING fireflies made out with light start shooting out along the water, attracting the little fish toward them. They probably thought it was food! As soon as they were on the move, Eytan and Murtagh got to work. Well it wasn’t so much “work” as it was a lot of fun as he chased after the fireflies and fish alike to get them toward the dancing dragon waiting for breakfast.

“We make a great team don’t we!” The colt’s enthusiasm caused him to miss a couple of the fish but he quickly realized what he was doing and managed to get focused again. He whooped with laughter as he chased after the fish - surprising them after they swam to get away from Eytan and spooking them to jumping out of the water and onto the shore. Most of them got away - fish were such slippery creatures - but he beamed with pride as he saw A’mal pounce on the first one. They managed to get several up onto the shore by the time Najya came over to him, thanking him for his help. “I’m glad we could help, Najya!” He beamed up at her and reached over to nudge her affectionately on the shoulder after she ruffled his forelock.

His lavender eyes looking back to A’mal, he laughed at how eagerly she was eating the fish - her tail looked like a whip as it moved around! “Look at her go!” The baby dragon sure was hungry! In all of the excitement, Murtagh had forgotten about his quest - he was having too much fun helping Najya and A’mal out! It felt so good knowing that he had been able to help them, that the little dragon’s stomach was not full because of some fun that he got to have with his very new friends. “Got quite the appetite, doesn’t she!” Were fish really that tasty?? He had never tried them!

“Thanks for letting me help you, Najya.” He politely added, after receiving a nudge from Eytan, reminding him about his manners. The bear wasn’t going to let him linger much longer but Murtagh was happy to take every moment that he could.
