The little creature felt more comfortable with her limbs. She tested each one individually before extending and retracting her leathery wings.  Najya laughed again, and this time, the dragon turned its golden gaze up to meet hers – looking expectantly at its bonded.  The look of expectation was mirrored by the feeling of expectation that trilled through the mare’s own veins. So this is what it means, being bonded.  How extraordinary.  “I think you need a name, little one,” the mare spoke, soothingly, to the newborn.  But what to name the little dragon?  What to name the creature that had seemingly brought the spark of happiness back to her life.

“A’mal. Hope. Because that’s what you’ve brought me.” she decided, still looking down upon the dragon.  The dragon – A’mal – wiggled her acceptance and the feeling of approval blossomed in Najya’s mind.

It was then that the hunger pains began to tug at her stomach, hunger pains that were not her own.  She knew that A’mal must be hungry after freeing herself from the eggshell, and the dragon let out a squeak in agreement.  She shifted her legs underneath her, and pulled herself to her feet.  The flats certainly wouldn’t be the easiest place to procure a meal for a newborn dragon.

She looked over her shoulder in time to catch sight of two figures approaching quickly, surprised that she hadn’t seen them sooner.  However, with the way the sky met the sand it was easy to obscure the obvious in this strange place. A’mal, curious as to what had drawn Najya’s attention, peeked between the mare’s front legs to get a better view of the strangers – who turned out to be a colt and what looked to be his bear companion.

Najya smiled at the boy, when it was obvious that the pair were no threat, and A’mal let out a squeak of her own. “Why hello there!” she offered the boy, and the bear, in way of greeting.  “It’s a dragon – a brand new one at that.  Her name is A’mal.  And mine is Najya.” she offered, with a little dip of her head.

“What’s your name? Is this your companion?” she asked the boy, offering another soft smile to him and the bear that accompanied him.  Distracted by the pleasantries, hunger again rumbled in Najya’s stomach, drawing her attention back to the dragon – who again let out a little squeak, pleading this time, and looked up at her bonded, abashed.
