She strode through frost ladened flora, glass basket hanging delicately between her lips. Her head was uncharacteristically low, curvaceous ears lax on their perch. There was no one around to see the duchess, and so, she lacked a reason to care for her demeanor. She was tragically lonely by choice. She was shutting out others again, as she so often did. In her youth this did not matter, those around her had an obligation to stay by her side, but those here did not.

Agnodice knew not how to fix her misfortune, and denied it's existence. But it certainly did exist. It was no different than her shadow, always there even if not seen by her eyes. Today, though, she saw it. She saw the emptiness which had stricken her life. And she ran from it. She picked up her basket and left her herd in search for something to at least distract her from reality.

She found herself covered in mud, standing in the middle of the Rotunda, staring at the stars through vision blurred by quiet tears. All she did was stand, feeling the burden of her heavy, hollow heart. She a rustle, a twig snap, startling the doctor into standing straight. Her ears pricked, she hastily wiped tears from her face, although a petal went up her nose whilst doing so.

The mare crept towards the sound, panicked by the idea of an encounter with someone when she looked like this. When her insides were her outsides and she wanted nothing more than to keep walking till she collapsed again. But she had to check the noise, for her healing instincts were always on.

But when she peeled back dead flora, she did not find a wounded animal. Laying in a diaphanous pool of moonlight was a single egg. It's shell was a pale white, gleaming in what little light had been provided. She was confused at first, for the egg was unusually large. But she didn't care. The egg looked lonely.

There had to be something in there, right? Wasn't it as lonely as she?

Agnodice fell to knees by the egg, wrapping her head and neck around it's alabaster curve. She wouldn't let the egg be lonely, for she knew the consequences of prolonged solidarity. She did not expect the egg to move, or it's shell to crack, or a black claw to peel away at the delicate casing. She jumped, suddenly regretting her altruism, but relaxed when she remembered a particular moment she once shared with a pale mare and an egg and a companion.

A companion?

She doubted herself, but as she watched a black, winged, reptilian creature unfurl itself from the egg, her reluctance began to diminish. As the dragon's soft blue eyes locked onto her own for the first time, her hollow heart was filled. She had never known she was missing a half of herself till she had found the other half.

"I have much to teach you," Agnodice murmured to the reptile, nosing his shell away from his body. The dragon trilled in response, yawning, curling up into her mane. She stayed silent, mind racing with ideas for a name, finding only one that sparked her interest. Her mentor, her partner, her everything, Herophilos. He was a doctor noble enough to be named after. "Herophilos," She whispered affirmatively into his tiny black scales.
