I paid attention during the important parts, especially when Tembovu began to speak of Nyx. My ears flicked forward, head falling to one side. Her absence? Strange. I thought little of it till my name was spoken by the King. My lips fell apart, my heart fluttered, my ears flicked back in uncertainty.
Me? A Captain?
At first I thought it was a joke, but no, the King was serious. I smiled, a half-hearted affair. I doubted Nyx's judgment momentarily due to my lack of experience, but in truth, I was grateful. I had been doing my best lately, for that was all I could do, and the fact that it was enough filled me with foreign blithe.
I bowed my head in honor, staring at my breast, hiding the accumulating trepidation bestowed unto me by way of frigid borne blood. The cheer of the herd echoed in my auds, but their acclaim was hollow to me at best. My eyes rose, seeking my mother, for her approval was the only one that meant anything to me.
My eyes whispered to her, 'Is this okay? Are you proud? Look, I'm trying,' tentatively through pale lashes and rapidly fading smoke. I cheered for my herd mates who had earned a promotion as well, though softly, and after my gaze had torn itself so conscientiously from the Queen.

She is far away. She...she is far, far away from me.
