With fire to keep us warm, and tools we made from rocks and bones

Gaucho stared out across the tumultuous waves.

Since removing the landbridge, the sea had grown more raucous and uncertain. It was something the dun hadn't anticipated, then then again, it didn't cause him much concern. His wings, and the wings of his species, could easily fly high above the reaching spray of the waves. And for those without wings? The magical bridge created by the Sun God would always shepherd them safely across.

Gaucho inhaled in the salty briny smell.

His fiery wings tightened against his flanks as a rushing warm breeze blew the long tendrils of his oddly silky mane and tail backwards. In his antlers, Mara nuzzled her smooth head against his brow gently, hissing softly. The snake was happy that Birdsong had blanketed the land, for with it came the warmth that allowed her cold-blooded body to move more freely. Vorsa, who was always warm regardless of the weather, sat perched on Gaucho's withers, taking a name. She nearly blended into the fire that constantly burned along his wings, and like those flames, the ones that radiated from her body provided no discomfort to the dun.

Ampere had gone, and Sohalia had returned.

That too was as unexpected as the turning tides below. Gaucho wasn't necessarily distraught by either change, though it did weigh heavily on his mind. Where had Ampere gone? He had heard from Tae that Zero said that Grusha and Ampere had gone on a secret mission, and while Gaucho assumed the boy had said this merely to comfort his sister, he wondered if there might be some truth in it. After all, Ampere was closest with Zero, perhaps he did know something Gaucho didn't...

But for now, she was gone. And that's all he knew for sure.

Sohalia
Many moons ago, it seemed, Gaucho had insisted that Sohalia be allowed into the Dragon's Throat. Though the ivory mare had appreciated the fervor with which he had welcomed her, she could not help but wonder what it meant. There was so much about their strange relationship that had gone unanswered. They had never been a pair for vows of undying affection, had never relied on words to secure their allegiance to one another -- but the lack of verbal reassurances made it difficult to guess where they stood after all that they had been through. Gaucho had declared her to be welcome on his sands, but the Transcended had not forgotten that they were, in fact, his sands. Was she welcome here because he had missed her and wanted her here, or simply because she carried his child? Had he invited her out of love, or out of obligation?

Whatever his reasoning, there had been precious little time to discuss it. As ever, the WildFire was distant, forever busy with the day-to-day tasks of being Sultan. From afar, Sohalia watched, proud of all that he had accomplished, pleased to see that he had remained so successful in her absence. She had never doubted him, particularly after learning his native tongue. For all that he had stumbled over the common Helovian language when they had first met, she had never assumed that he was unintelligent, and her faith in him had not been misplaced. He was everything that the Dragon's Throat deserved and more. She only wished that she had been enough to continue to serve beside him.

The Transcended waited for a day that she might have the steed to herself, might be able to figure out exactly what they were, exactly why he had still offered her a place, after all this time. He loved her still, of that she was certain, though she could not quite determine if it was a love born of nostalgia for easier times long since past or something else entirely. If she was honest with herself, she didn't know why she loved him, either. But then, there had never been a rhyme or reason to their courtship. It had been passionate, fiery and hot, never logical in the slightest. And she had liked it that way.

Their child rolled over in her belly, and she grunted softly. It was time.

It was not difficult to find the flaming stallion, though it surprised her that he had been so close in her time of need. He stood on the edge of the oasis, gazing across the water, and for a moment, his mate lover hesitated. For once, he looked peaceful, as though he didn't have a million and three things to do. Sohalia was loathe to interrupt, but their babe would not wait, and she knew that he would want to know.

She approached in silence, arriving beside him and attempting to lean gently against him, their wings touching. "Kashi jadolat, shekh ma shieraki anni," she told him softly, her voice warm and calm. The time has come, my sun and stars. She glanced towards him then, a smile in her eyes despite all of the unanswered questions. It had been easy, this time, to give herself to him. There had been a time that she had longed for his devotion, had hoped to mold him into the mate that she had wanted. Now, though, she accepted him and them, despite their many faults.

Her labor was short and relatively easy, a marvel to her after the horrendous difficulty she had faced with Aleta. In truth, she had not known if she would survive this pregnancy, if her last had destroyed her insides to the point of no return -- and yet here she was, suddenly it seemed, lying in the sand beside the beautiful form of their newborn daughter. The girl was softly colored, but accented with the dun markings of her father, and as the filly blinked up at the pair with wide blue eyes, it occurred to Sohalia that she was happy. Despite everything, she was at peace.

"Talk talk talk."

The first thing that she noticed about the world was that it was bright.  It was bright and it was strange and she wasn't really sure that she liked it all that much, if she was being perfectly honest.

At first, all the child saw was white.  She heard a sound from beside her, a strange, sandy shifting of weight that she could not yet identify as mother, and then she was being assaulted cleaned of the (rather disgusting) fluids that coated her newborn body.  A moment passed, and then two, and her vision faded from that awful brightness to a rather pleasant scene of blues and golds and silvers.  Well, perhaps the world wasn't all that bad, after all.

The creature that was cleaning her (not assaulting, she reminded herself in that wordless way that children have) was mother - it had to be, instinct told her, and so she bleated a pitiful, yet cheerful, greeting to the large ivory dove. The sound disappointed her (she had heard Ma speak while in the womb, and she had always sounded so lovely), and so she snorted her irritation to the sands surrounding her. An irritable squeal left the girl then, proclaiming to the world that she would one day display the fire of her father in place of the collection of her mother.

Speaking of her father, the girl twisted around Ma's (ceaseless) grooming to locate the large, dark shape that loomed in the distance (he seemed so very far away to the newborn girl, after all). He was behind her somewhere, and quite tall, and as the filly craned to look at him, she found herself flopping awkwardly into the sands, surprising a whinny out of herself. A frown of dismay crossed her face as she regarded her upside-down sire - Pa, fix it, she almost seemed to command him, cross at her lack of coordination.

With fire to keep us warm, and tools we made from rocks and bones

It was Mara who alerted Gaucho to the Transcended's presence. The serpent slipped quickly from his antlers, skimming her gun-steel body down his shoulders and onto the warm reddish sands. Vorsa turned as well, trilling a hello to her astral cousin, and gliding over to where the (soon to be trio) were coming from.

Gaucho turned as both of his bonded's left him, and he didn't need to borrow their eyes to know who it was who approached.

Instead of letting her press herself against his wing, Gaucho instead raised his fiery appendage. It wasn't meant as a protective or defensive gesture, but merely one which would allow him to pull her silently closer to him. There was no hesitation in it, and familiarity cloaked his every movement. For a moment, he inhaled deeply. He was, as Sohalia, peaceful in that moment. He didn't need to say anything to the pale dove, no hellos, no how are yous, no are you staying long? He was content to merely have her at his side as the salty sea breeze tangled their long tails.

Her words brought a smile to his lips. They had been through this enough times before that there was no panic in the dun, and indeed, he was actually quite pleased to be present for the entirety of Sohalia's labour. Normally, he had the unfortunate luck of arriving halfway into it. Gently the Wildfire stood over his mate as she endured the throws of childbirth on her own. Healing fire rained down from his wings, covering the dove as she pushed, ensuring that whatever wounds her body endured during this process, would be immediately remedied. He could at least do that much (although the thought of this did drive his mind back to when he had first found her, when she had declined his healing because she was not in need of it...but those thoughts were immediately dispelled, as Vinati came into the world).

Gaucho chuckled as the small pale filly screamed her new outrage at the world around her. He watched her turn to stare at him, and then promptly learn about gravity and the hold that it held on her. Her bright gaze seemed to tether her to him, and him to her, and he obeyed willingly. The giant that was Gaucho stepped towards the young girl, his large bone-pierced muzzle finding the soft roundness of her should. He pushed gently, but hard enough to try and put her small body right side up.

"Zheana, jalan atthirari anni." He whispered towards Sohalia, though his eyes were still locked on the petite shape before him. The child was beautiful, but he expected no less from a daughter of The Transcended.

"Name?" He asked, his stormy gaze now moving to the blue-green depths of Sohalia's eyes. As with most of his children, the naming was rarely up to him.

But that .. was probably for the best.

Sohalia
At first she hadn't noticed that Gaucho's fire was blanketing her, offering healing should she need it; when she realized that he was helping her without her ever having had to ask, she smiled up at him gratefully. For all she knew, he was saving her life, and not for the first time. The mare wondered distantly when he had procured healing magic, for all she could remember of his abilities was purely aesthetic or destructive. In the end, she supposed, it didn't really matter, however much it might pain her that she had not been there to see it.

Whatever they were, whatever their past or their future, at this moment, they moved around one another with a certain ease, a comfortable silence that brought peace rather than unease. Even after the birthing, as the WildFire hovered nearby, watching their newly born daughter with the kind of love only a father could have in his eyes, theirs was a calm and pleasant company. The ivory mare began to bathe the child, thoughtfully mulling over her spirited entrance to the world. Of her children, she remembered none of them showing quite this much gusto, though that could simply be because it had been so very long ago.

In any case, the girl toppled over backwards, eliciting a soft chuckle from her mother. Before Sohalia could offer her assistance, Gaucho was there, easing the babe back onto her stomach. The Transcended smiled, an adoring, simple thing to offer him. Of names, she could think of only one that could be fitting: "Vinati," she told him after a moment in response to his query. "It means 'prayer,' in my homeland." In many ways, this child was, more so than any other, an answer to the dove's prayers, indeed. She had brought her wayward parents together again, and for that, the Transcended could only be grateful.

Sohalia rose stiffly from her position on the ground, shaking off the accumulated dirt and sand on her hide. The movement was not quite as smooth as it had been in the past, and the mare wondered if this was what it felt like to begin growing old. She nudged the little princess gently, urging her to stand. "Up now, ma shekhikhi," she murmured. My little light. It was a pet name that she had given all of her children, the precious beings that had forever been the light in her darkest times. Once the girl had risen, the mare moved to press her muzzle against Gaucho's shoulder, relaxing as she allowed their daughter to consume her first meal.

"Talk talk talk."

The world was a topsy-turvy sort of thing, the unnamed filly decided as she watched her father's muzzle draw closer. How very strange he looked from this angle! Perhaps, she reasoned, the world was simply confused. Yes, that must be it - this couldn't be right at all.

When his soft muzzle pressed against her shoulder, she found herself surprised by how soft it was. She nickered cheerfully as she found herself right-side-up again (ah, yes, much better), reaching eagerly to explore his skin with exploratory lips. Provided he allowed it, her mouth would soon find the bone that he wore in his nose, and the girl would squeal with surprise before lipping at it curiously. What was it? Ma didn't have one. Perhaps only boys wore bones in their noses!

It wasn't long before Ma interrupted the filly's curiosity, nudging her rudely encouragingly to get up. Vinati (newly named, and pleased with it) snorted, scrunching her tiny nose at her mother. Still, she couldn't bring herself to be that stubborn, particularly when her stomach decided that it would be the perfect time to start growling. (What was that feeling, that emptiness inside?)

The girl looked balefully to her father (one can almost imagine her rolling her eyes, blaming Ma for her unfortunate hunger), then stuck one spindly leg out in front of her, planting it in her effort to rise for the first time. Her hind legs bunched beneath her, coiling in their attempt to force her tiny body into the air. Much to her dismay, she quickly stumbled forward (too much force) and found herself sprawled awkwardly in the sand. Again she snorted, determination evident in her frowning face. This time, she managed to stand for all of 1.53 seconds before plummeting helplessly to the ground, where she glared at the grown-ups. They made it look so easy.

Her third attempt ended with Vinati standing with her legs comically splayed; after a moment, the girl worked up the courage to move one hoof, and then the other, tottering towards her mother and the food that she instinctually knew was there. As she approached, Ma directed her gently to the source, and she began to suckle happily, her tiny stump a tail wiggling with pleasure.

With fire to keep us warm, and tools we made from rocks and bones

Prayer ... Gaucho was of course not mentally contemplative enough to read into the meaning of the name, though he did find it interesting that the girl's name was from Sohalia's homeland, rather than his own. All of their other children either had names from his native language, or were just words that Sohalia had found pleasing. But that child would be named with a word from the Transcended's past was ... interesting. The dun didn't particularly know what to make of it, though he didn't mind the way the word sounded in his ears, or the meaning of it.

Gaucho's antlered skull nodded, and he lightly pressed his lips through the crest of Sohalia's mane, ruffling the soft greyish mane there, before pulling back to let mother and child do as they needed.

Rather comically he witnessed Vinati's first encounter with gravity, smirking lovingly as she lost that battle and ended up back on the reddish sands. He was proud to see her trying again almost immediately, and snorted approvingly as she splayed out her legs and seemingly willed herself to move towards Sohalia's flank.

"Gaucho layafatz." He mumbled, perhaps more to himself than to Sohalia. But it was true, he was happy. There were still seeds of discord in his soul, worrying and wonderings about Ampere, but Sohalia had ... well, she hadn't quite taken Ampere's place. That wasn't right, in the same way Ampere had not taken hers. Sohalia merely was, a sparkling and effervescent presence inside of his heart, and her light and love had swamped his mind pleasantly and completely.

"Both zheana." Both beautiful, he said clearly to her this time. The Wildfire moved away from the nursing child to stand before his mate The Transcended, inhaling the air deeply.

It had been some time since the mare had felt at peace, but as she stood beside the oasis with her mate Sultan and their daughter, she was wrapped in a calm happiness that could not be shaken. A soft smile played at the corners of her mouth, her tired gaze fixated lovingly on the filly as she tried (and failed) to rise from the sands. The mare remained silent, allowing Vinati the opportunity to try again, to find the determination that undoubtedly flowed through her veins. With any luck, the girl would prove more dependable than her mother. Later, after she and the WildFire had gone their separate ways for the time being, she would again begin to doubt... but for now, the filly's light eclipsed all of her mother's fears.

"Gaucho layafatz," he told her, and the Transcended mumbled a satisfied affirmation. She, too, was happy, content by her place in the Dragon's Throat and hopeful for whatever future she had here. For whatever future she had with him. Regardless of her failure to stay, regardless of her momentary lapses in judgement in the past... she loved him. She had always loved him. She had spent too long trying to change him, to mold him into the lover that she had wanted him to be, and she had almost missed the glory of the relationship they had already had. Perhaps, if the gods were good, there would be a chance, now, for her to mend what she had broken.

Beautiful, he called them then, though it was only the prospect of herself being beautiful that brought a rueful smile to the mare's lips. It had been some time since she had felt pretty, desirable in any sense - and for him to assure her now, after she had only just been in the throes of childbirth... well, that was amusing to say the least, though sweet of him to say. Her gaze dropped to the sand, that pleased smile still on her face as she accepted his praise despite disagreeing with him. She was getting old, she was still fat from carrying Vinati. That she didn't look a complete mess was a miracle in and of itself. Beautiful? No, she was no beauty. Not anymore.

Vinati, though... the filly was beautiful, and that was enough for her.

"Talk talk talk."
