For once in her incredibly naïve life the girl had indeed noticed something was up. It wasn’t for the power of her own brain though but for the desperation she still found herself in to find someone else in this seemingly empty world. Her ears, which otherwise wouldn’t have been so sensitive to the quiet of mornings and late night walks, had indeed caught the sound of another creature. Several time she had stopped and called out, but never yet had anyone answered. Normally the girl wasn’t given to fear and worry, but as she continued to hear the steps trail her, the voice of dear Virgil slipped through her head. Stanger danger. Her brother even chimed in, never trust a hidden voice. Snorting them off she tried to move on, and for the most part, her nature allowed it. The last few times the creature was certainly closer, and the girl felt her own instincts raise the hair on her back with warning. Even the wind through her mane had gone dead still.

She hadn’t liked it in the woods, and less in the clearing, so up the stone steps she’d gone. Only, she was still just the innocent child of before, and her mind hadn’t reached far enough to realize it was a corner. The sound just outside grew closer, and the filly felt herself give a tremble. Yet at that her curled ears pinned back. A resolution made and resolve awakened. The wind ripped through her own mane, whipping it up in a fury. Some hidden quality at last peeping through. The scars, though few on her coat, given meaning. Naïve as she was, the girl was not a defenseless. A shadow moves across as the creature comes to the entrance, and with it the wings at her sides strike open, steel singing out from its casing to flash with threat in the shadows. Knowing the babe as we do the image is most confusing. As the wind whipped around her, and the chest and steel flared with defiance, she does not look the poor child as before.

“Who are you who follows yet does not answer?” The voice gives her away. It wobbles, and leans away with a caution that dampens the threat of her stance. Into the place he steps, yet instantly the girl is thrown into confusion. What had Virgil and her brother warned? Pointy teeth? Evil laughter? Ugly giants? It was none of those things though. Instead it was a charming looking older stallion, with a kindly smile. The armored wings lower slightly, the angry wind at her back easing. What was this? Had her imagination run away with her again? A flare of embarrassment started to bloom in her chest, but then the other speaks up.

He speaks no harm, and the girl, being the innocent pearl, lets her wings carefully, with blades still extended, tuck back to her side. A nerve still shivered unsure within her, but the moods in the darling child were like waves coming and going. Besides she was ever so desperate for company, and he seemed nice enough. So the naivety of the girl hadn’t left her completely.

The Falls….that dark stallion had mentioned that place. Yet her confusion reigned until he spoke again. Her curled ears come forward to listen. And then, in a change of attitude only a child could make she burst into laughter. The wind which had whirled about her in fury only a minute earlier now settles into its playful swing, and her face was light and at ease again. The soft light laugh pulls away and her gentle rolling voice replaces it, the caution of before vanished. “Why didn’t you just ask?” It was a tease but a genuine question. For a girl who always wore her emotions on her sleeve and showed them, the idea of sneaking around just to ask a question seemed positively ridiculous. Which is saying something coming from her.

With that the girl reached to her side and each wing extended in kind as she gripped a dull point on the blades and pulled them back into the casing. She’s learned long ago to beware leaving them carelessly out. As the second wing’s metal clicked back in she turns to him again, the wind pulling gently at her mane. “Kaj, right?” Her voice back to its normal sweet tones question. “Why are the wilds unsafe?” It was a child’s question, but one that she’d never had answered before. (Virgil had always told her “because” or some legend of the sea god) The curiosity of the girl had returned, and while the other weighty question of who was his family also begged asking, this one bothered her more. She had lived out here for several moons, and though she found strange creatures and conversations, it was he who had ever made her feel unsafe. Which begged the question. Besides, if there were some terrible mystery lingering, or some dark adventure waiting, well it sounded rather fun!
