Seeing so much green in one place still surprised him sometimes.  When the trees towered overhead like cathedral ceilings, blocking out the sun and sky, it felt almost claustrophobic.  How did people breathe like this?  When did trees start growing so tall?  How did you run?

With hardly more sound than a ghost he slipped between the trees.  Each pale hoof was placed carefully, just so.  He tiptoed around brush and the odd flower that poked it's head out of the loam.  He skirted the trunks of giants as though they might come to life and reach for them, affording them the same respect he might render to any larger foe.  His eyes flashed wide, white showing all around the rosy iris.

Then he spots it, a break in the foliage where the sunlight dapples down and reflects off water.  Still, standing water.  That at least is somewhat familiar.  His back curls and he bucks briefly, a little flick of his heels as if throwing off some small weight.  Then he steps out in a long-strided trot, head swaying with each step.  He can only hope the water is not quite so cold here as some he has encountered in the past.  He can smell it now, over the rich wet loam of the forest and the unfamiliar smell of leaf rot and growing things.

He checks himself as he breaks into the area around the pool, abruptly aware that the air itself has fooled him.  So busy sorting out new scents from familiar, he had not realized that he was not alone in the woods.  It shouldn't have startled him.  This place was populous, he was coming to realize.  So far at least, most seemed content to let him be.  Which was fine by him.

Unlike the others he has met so far, she is small- that's more familiar to him, though not the darkness of her coat or the touches of teal color that mark her.  They remind him of the sky, as if she flew too close and stained her hair in a little of the color.

Still as a startled deer he watches her, not quite realizing how long he stares.  She does not smell like the winged ones he remembers.  She looks gentler somehow as well.  She is not like the creatures that could send a foal running just by their shadow as they fly above.  His nostrils flare wide, bringing in her scent, trying to decide if he should stay or leave.
