In the chaos of the moment, the thundering pulse in his ears and choice words spewed from dumbstruck lips all distracted the sound of the juvenile squeal from nearby; her impish delight was lost well amid confusion. Toes were straining with every inch of their worth to find the soil at the base of the pit, any traction which might aid his escape. All at once though, the tiny trapper’s questioning voice was there behind him, then above, and from beneath the chaos of jerking corks Banjo’s mossy-green eyes widened upon her bright young face up close. “You little devil, haha!...” he laughed loudly into the dirt, wedging an elbow awkwardly above ground at last.

“I did ha… but the real joke now’s gettin this ol oaf out!”

The sound of her sheer, bubbling pleasure, could do naught but pull a softer smile into his expression - the hole was not the only snare he’d fallen victim to. “Names Banj, kiddo. What’s yours?” While she loitered in his face, the horsaroo pressed with all his might the thick mass of his tail into the far opposite rim of the hole. It gave him leverage enough to gouge those formidable toenails into the wall beneath his breast instead, and finally (though barely minutes had passed), Banjo began a clumsy, staggered ascent.

Stinking like the grave he’d emerged from, soil stain splashed across various limbs, the buck emerged and sat back against his tail (curled underneath), to study the pastel-coated ankle biter. On all accounts she resembled something irresistibly cute, innocent and … wait, was there a sweet smell about her? Lifting a brow curiously, he dropped again to stand square upon brown, clawed hands. “So how long’d it take ya to dig out that?” he asked, gesturing towards the wickedly deep forest feature with his whiskered nose, “…better get it covered again quickly, eh? Before anyone notices.” Turning slowly (fore-quarters first, hind-legs after), he began to gather new branches for her to relay atop her masterpiece.
