With fire to keep us warm, and tools we made from rocks and bones

It wasn't exactly fury that creased his brow and made him fly with reckless speed, but it was close. It wasn't betrayal either, but it was close to that too. The feeling that welled within the Wildfire's chest was something he couldn't articulate, and not simply because of his poor grasp of Helovia's common tongue. There wasn't a word for it in his language either. It was too raw, too all consuming. It defied definition and yet it overtook his mind, body, and soul like a torrential wind, soaking him through to his very core.

He burned with it.

He had come to terms with the revolving positions of Ampere and Sohalia in his life, forcibly accepting the arrival of one with the almost necessary departure of the other. He had been able to forgive Sohalia for leaving, or had at least been able to be okay with it. He had welcomed her back, turning his back on their past and embracing their future as he always had. She had after all, come back to him.

Only it seemed, he wasn't her first stop.

It had been the filly he had come across through pure happenstance, that had unraveled anything; the child of Sohalia and Kaj. Her age and the things she said solidified the picture that had formed in Gaucho's mind - sure, some of the details his imagination filled in, but the important parts the girl had confirmed. Had Sohalia knowingly returned to the Falls, the way she had last time she returned to Helovia? Had she sought out Kaj intentionally? These details his mind wildly speculated upon, but that didn't change the things he knew. She had not come to find him - she had sought refuge somewhere else first. That .. he knew and understood. That she had bedded Kaj, one of his few friends, bore his child and said nothing of it to him?

The flames that licked his wings flared brightly.

He couldn't think of how to forgive her for this.

He couldn't think of anything.

But then -

A voice drew down his attention, and he saw Nyx. That he had met the mare before was not what made him dive down towards her, but two features of herself that dulled the anger simmering just behind his eyes.

- That she wanted to spar
- The electricity that he knew she possessed.

In his rage and grief, he allowed his mind to superimpose Ampere over the gray mare below. Physically they were not similar in more than a handful of ways. But fighting ... and electricity ... His hate for Sohalia raised the memory of Ampere onto a pedastil, and now Nyx was afforded that same position in his mind.

Yes, she was what he wanted. What he needed. Let her throw her lightning at him - he would willingly take the cold fire. Better to face the wounds on his skin, than those on his heart.

Without a word, for a creature as large as Gaucho rarely needed to draw attention to his arrival, began the spar that Nyx had asked for, and that he needed. He did not throw fire at her though - did not attack from a distance. Instead, he flew near to the ground until his large black hooves touched the loamy earth and began to carry his weight. Thundering forward, he galloped towards her, aiming to slow to a canter as he neared. He wanted to collide his chest into her own, to crash into her and feel her yield beneath him. The spikes on his collar were not extended so he would not puncture her, though his teeth did snag outwards, trying to bite her shoulder or wither should his neck and her positioning afford him that opportunity.

He felt grief and anguish slosh ahead of himself like a wave, and as the heat of Nyx's body wafted back to him, his emotions crashed down upon him. The fire around him rose and brightened though produced no heat, and in his antlers, Mara was uncharacteristically still.  She knew that this was his battle to fight, not hers. As quickly (and safely) as she could, the serpent slipped down the base of his neck, spine, and hind-leg, disappearing in the grass as she left the Wildfire to his own devices.

Sorry for the delay! :D
