Perhaps it was the combination of Elsa’s cooling touch upon the flames and then the abrupt change in temperate offered by the fire in Tilney’s lantern, but suddenly a sharp cracking sound was issued from deep, deep within the patch of brambles. It continued, a sound like ice breaking deep within some ageless glacier, finally resonating upwards and outwards into the Edge like the long and low bellow of a horn. But then it changed. The pitch drew up so sharply that it almost seemed to click as it skirted half a dozen notes to reach a piercing whistle-sound in the highest register of the equine’s hearing. The sound wailed - and not just metaphorically, for it had taken on an anthropomorphic tone, as if there was something doing the screaming. The earth beneath them began to shift and bubble unhappily, as if something far, far below was starting to move. To wake up. ”Run!” cried a voice, so small and fragile that it sounded the way a snowflake might. The air suddenly took on a lighter pinkish colour, but only for a second. ”Run! She’s waking up!” That same pink pulse again. Although the voice was a whisper, the unmistakable sound of panic was quite clear despite how whispey the words seemed to be. Was there a flash of white, deep within the thicket? If there was, it was very small, and lasted only a moment, but that same pleading voice was heard, carried on an invisible breeze which drew it directly to the ears of all those assembled. ”Please!” It begged, accompanied again by the pink light, before it died away completely.
