She’d been the short way off when she heard it, an indescribable sound that sent a long, cold shiver along the length of her spine. The girl believed in bad feelings – the girl believed in ill omens, and something in her little bird’s heart screeched furiously for her to go. Far. Away.

And she would have, if she hadn’t seen the little lantern perched in a strange set of branches, the fire dancing from side to side. It wasn’t anywhere near dark enough for him to need its light, was it? For several drawn-out seconds she stood anchored in place, every nerve singing danger, danger. But when her muscles released, the first step she took, unconscious and timid but resolute (and perhaps damning) all the same, was towards the lantern.

There were more people there than she’d initially noticed. The King she saw first, tall as he was – then another man nearly as tall, colored as boldly as a bird, and not too far away, a pair of slim figures. Alysanne she recognized from around the Edge – the other, then, snow flickering softly all around her, must have been the Queen Icebound. There was a filly, too, half-hidden by the other bodies gathered at the scene.

Ultima stuttered forward, slow and visibly shaken, her expression stone. “Tilney,” she began, her voice small as a field mouse, small as a flower’s might be, nearly lost in the sound of wings squaring, the crackle of three lightnings. “What’s—” She froze again, her eyes snagging on the sharp tangle of thorns. Something – her eyes narrowed, pupils dilated, every hair and feather on her body horribly still with dread – because something, something was –

“We shouldn’t,” she tried, her voice mostly the whistling of breath too shallow. Prey-thing that she was, standing so close to — whatever it was, whatever this fearful quaking indelible danger was — made her stomach wrench hard and sharp. Her shoulder touched Tilney’s, trembling.

Something was coiling there, beneath those brambles. Something great, terrible.

But she could not look away.
