in your heart shall burn
an UNQUENCHABLE flame

How much time had passed? It is difficult to say, but her eventual return was (and always will be) inevitable.

Petyr soars ahead, of course, leading the way by many miles - his brilliant green form flitting amongst the trees and observing her family and her home while waiting for her to arrive. Some faces are missing and he notes these with a relatively cool and detached demeanor but he does not share them with her (knowing that at least one of those missing just might break her heart.) Many more remain and several are new. In fact, the herd itself seems to have exploded with foals - a number of which bearing an uncanny resemblance to Tembovu. The king of the Edge, it seems, has been quite busy. Hopefully he hadn't tried to kill anyone whilst she was gone. (Goodness knows the girl would be unable to sleep until she finds Mauja alive after all this time.)

Dusk was just beginning to settle in when the small, dark form entered the Edge, clinging to the shadows and moving as quietly as her small cat paws could manage. Her teal eyes are even more keen in this particular form, allowing her better clarity in this nearly grey, semi-dark light. Her thick fluffy coat and sharp claws had also proven useful a number of times during her journey.

The girl sticks close to the trees, prepared to launch herself up into one should the need arise. As usual, the purple passionflowers follow in her wake - leaving a trail that only some would know to follow. The fluffy black cat slips and slinks rather easily from tree to tree, pausing to blend with the darker shadows whenever a noise tickles her sensitive ears. Here in the Edge, Naerys is home but still she remains hidden in her newly found feline form. Perhaps out of fear, due to her rather sudden disappearance. Or perhaps due to her fondness for the ability to become inconspicuous - a mere shadow amongst the living.

Would she be seen?
Who would be the first to figure her out?
Naerys practically purrs with anticipation.

Excuse the ickiness of this. It's been awhile but she's back and in cat form. :D

All thoughts in Alysanne’s mind came to a halt when she caught the dappling of blue and purple among the grass and needles.

“Naerys.”

Her daughter’s name was exhaled in nothing more than a whisper but it caught in her throat all the same. Any amount of time spent between the appearances of those beautiful passion-flowers along the floor of the Edge’s forests - leaving a trail and a sign of her daughter’s presence - was too long. It didn’t matter if it was a day or a week or a year. Daily absences were to be expected, of course, but she adored seeing those signs - even if she didn’t see the girl herself.

Apologies and regrets are already rising in Alysanne, worry and joy mingling and she does not know which one of those emotions is causing her eyes to blur with tears as she hastily looks around - hoping to see signs of the brown and white girl she loved with all her heart. “Naerys!” Louder now, but still choked. Without any of the anger of their last meetings but all of the distress. She could not see her now but it was eating at her. All she wanted was a glance, a moment, to know her daughter was okay.

No, she was greedier than that. She wanted more, wanted to hold her daughter again. To get the chance to learn who her daughter was growing into instead of the image she had in her head - the image that had been so wrong.

Hemlock began to weave through the canopy - keeping his sharp eyes peeled for that bright green form of Petyr, knowing that he wouldn’t be far if Naerys was nearby. Neither of them notice the black cat hidden in the underbrush even as Alysanne passed by - they were looking for a tall girl, after all. The trail of passion-flowers has faded and there is still no sign.

With no shortage of fear, she began to fear that she hallucinated them - that she has finally cracked and the effects are unpredictable. “Please be here.” She whispered to the trees as if they might listen and part to reveal her daughter hidden but safe.

Naerys didn't really know whom she expected to approach first or when her presence might be noticed but as the sound of approaching hooves reaches her ears, her heart flutters with nervous excitement. And, if she were being honest, she felt a twinge of fear, as sudden and undeniable as it is inexplicable. Petyr, thus far, has been successful in keeping his distance - settling himself into the trees on the far side of the Edge from where the girl made her entrance. His bright, jeweled tones would have drawn far too much attention - revealing much more than she wished to reveal. Though, not having him by her side was enough to boost her anxiety levels. Petyr is a source of comfort for her - a guide on so many levels. It isn't until her mother's voice drifts towards her through the trees that she begins to calm and relax.

'Naerys!' she cries, except... her voice is almost fragile. Choked by an overflow of emotion that leaves the girl's heart squeezed and aching. Once more Naerys has hurt her. Once again she's done exactly what she never wanted to do. Yet it apparently comes naturally to her, as automatic as breathing.

She remains still, tucked into the shadows at the base of a tree, when Alysanne passes by. Mother doesn't know about her feline form and a small part of her almost wants to keep it that way - perhaps out of a selfish desire to keep it a guarded secret or perhaps because she is afraid of her reaction. But that small part isn't likely to win. Her gaze trails over the winged mare's face, noting every worried crease, the hopeful shine in those emerald eyes - every detail breaking her heart one tiny crack at a time. So lost is she in the moment, Naerys forgets about her own current state. "Mama!" she cries as she leaps from her shadowy refuge. The fluffy black cat races toward the mare, quite small by comparison, and before her brain has a chance to catch up to her heart she's rubbing affectionately against the mare's front leg - weaving in and out, purring loudly. "I'm sorry mama, I'm so sorry..." she murmurs as she circles around, her tail held high.

The flurry of emotion pulls at Petyr from where he sits, perched on a branch in the northern reaches of the Edge. It is indicative that his bonded is no longer alone, allowing the vivid hued magpie to return to her side. Frankly, he is a bit disappointed that only one had come to greet her. But he holds it secret because none could ever love her like he does. He soars low and fast, darting through the trees with a practiced speed and agility, only slowing when he nears their location. Pale eyes fill with a bemused laughter as he swoops in to land on a low branch of the tree Naerys had hidden beneath only moments ago. "You still cat." he chuckles but Naerys is too caught up in the moment to acknowledge his meaning. So he simply watches, waiting... always waiting.

One of the last things that Alysanne expected to happen was for a small black cat to come shooting out of the bushes near by. But the most startling thing about it all was that the cat called out to her, called out with her daughter’s voice.

Alright, so she really had gone insane. First hallucinating the flowers and then that her daughter was a cat.

But hallucination or dream, real or not, there was only ever one reaction that Alysanne would have to discovering her daughter - a rush of love and relief. “Naerys?!” Alysanne asked in bewilderment as the cat bounded toward her, rubbing against her legs in a manner that spoke of affection. But of course, though she did not recognize the form she would recognize that voice anywhere (and Petyr came swooping in, a flash of bright colour in the corner of her eye, further confirming her suspicions. Carefully, Alysanne lowered her head to the level of the cat - her eyes glistening with tears but they spoke of relief and joy now.

Because while Naerys had caused her pain in her absence, in the unmended fracture of their relationship, it was forgiven in the heartbeat it had taken for her to recognize her daughter. Whatever ills her little girl may do, Alysanne knew she would forgive each and every one of them without question. This was her daughter and the love she had for her was only rivaled by that she had for her son and sister. Her voice was barely above a whisper when she spoke - still raw with emotion. “Shhh it’s okay, my darling girl. I’m sorry too.” The idea that she had chased her daughter away had never left her, it had wormed its way into her mind and haunted her nightmares. For someone who loved being a mother as much as she did, Alysanne had a knack for holding her children away from her. First Artorius and then Naerys…

There was so much that she wanted to apologize for, almost too much to put into words. Saying that she was sorry wasn’t enough.

Now that the search was over, Hemlock abandoned his weaving trail through the trees and came to rest on the same branch as Petyr - hooting a friendly (though cautious) greeting to the bright green bird.

Unable to put her apologies into words, Alysanne instead addressed the most significant difference about her daughter - instead of growing taller in her absence she had grown much smaller. And changed species! “When did this happen?” She asked curiously, reaching to nuzzle Naerys and feel the soft fur of the cat against her muzzle.

like breaking diamonds with your hands
It was getting darker, and Mauja roamed the Edge like a restless ghost. The days were getting hotter, promising for a cruel Tallsun, and memories he'd rather let stay buried had begun to poke their way up through the ash and soil—

Except the ash had all washed out, in slate gray rivulets from a torrential rain, eventually soaked up by the earth as nutrients for the new life pulled from its fire-wracked depths. Black scorched bark had grown healthy with the tug of the ancient's power, life restored where his wayward brother had taken it—but later, it had burned again, the dry heat of Tallsun perfect kindling for the spurned Keahi. No God had saved it then, and sometimes, Mauja found himself in the burnt section of the forest. A few trees still bore the mark of its hungry rampage, and forever would, but aside from that—in the true irony of fire, new life had grown aplenty. Low and wild and colorful, it set itself apart from the rest of the forest.

And it was that he didn't want to think about: fire. Wildfire. If the sun's rays drove the moisture from the trees and the grass, would something catch flame? Would a stray piece of glass from their broken wall amplify the heat, set a spark, and drive them into the arms of the sea as they sought escape from the certain death of smoke and flame?

For where the forest and the fields recovered, even thrived, after a fire, flesh did not. These brittle, fragile beings, with bones and hearts, died in fire.

“Naerys!”

The call was faint, distressed, carrying an edge of fear—Mauja's black-rimmed ears flicked, and his head shot up, neck stiff. What was—what was going on?

And when was the last time he had seen Naerys? Too long, too long, and he hadn't thought about it, not really, just like he hadn't spoken to Glacia in forever and Snö had been dead a year and—

He drew in a deep breath. He doubted Alysanne wandered the Edge like a wraith crying out for her child, so something must've happened. Something must've sparked all that fear and worry they carried in their hearts, because that fear and worry was born from love and love was the singularly most painful thing Mauja knew of.

And besides, Naerys was his friend, wasn't she?

He stopped stalling, and started running. The dirt path underneath his hooves was solid, familiar, one he had run how many times before? He didn't know, didn't care, but over the years he figured he had visited every nook and cranny of the Edge, from the rim of its white cliffs to the border now marked by glass—

Just as abruptly as he had started running, he stopped running; white hair billowed in a halo, pristine strands sticking to a sweat-gray neck. No one was dying. No one was injured. He didn't even know why his heart had begun to thrum so wildly, so madly, but it had, and with every step on the way he had started to see things in his mind, bad things, heartbreaking things, but there was just Alysanne, muzzle burrowing into the fluffy coat of a black cat.

A black cat trailing passionflowers.

Wide-eyed, he started to gracelessly backpedal, convinced he had interrupted a moment not meant for him.
