As the Tallsun (that’s what they called this season, these Helovians) days grew longer, their heat grew more intense. She was finding that the passage of time above the waves was marked with great changes in temperature and weather. Beneath the waves, there were times of warmer water and times of colder currents, but nothing as drastic as this heat. And the Akvian, with her plated skin that could not sweat, spent more and more time in the Falls’ freshwater pools. But the freshwater, unlike saltwater, would swell her skin and bloat her ridges after a time—it led to chafing between her plates and sore tissues. In short, she could not spend all her time in the water.

So when the freshwater’s annoyances grew to be too much, she headed north, towards where the few, rare cool breezes occasionally came from. Her long, striped limbs quickly grew dull; her lustrous colors were particularly sensitive to the lack of salt and so she appeared more pallid than usual. Except for her eyes; those brightly ringed pupils were as vibrant and ferocious as ever.

The mountains brought a mild relief from the heat—though she did not focus on that for long. Instead, her sharp gaze was attracted to a gathering of bodies; some winged, some horned, some neither. Her bladed horn glinted as she rose her proud head and paused her steps to inspect those in the crowd. Warily she watched the wings, though her eyes kept darting to the creature they surrounded—what was it?

It was some strange earth-walking creature. It looked similar to the fleet-footed deer, though this seemed more gangly, and certainly had more substance to its bones. Scaled ears sweep forward, listening to the wailing sobs shake its youthful body. And a surprising pang struck through the warrior’s chest: it was alone, too.

Her gaze swept the horizons, searching mostly the direction from where she had come, looking for any shadows or shapes that might match this little one’s kindred. Though she kept her distance from the gathering.
