The Haruspex Cave.

No, your cave, she reminded herself quietly, staring into the mouth of the cave with a heavy heart. It still smelled of Ashamin. She knew little of how to properly do her new job. She had dedicated herself to the scholarly path long ago, but she found herself tentative still. The Clovenheart had left her with large hooves to fill, at least that much was certain.

Altair prodded the spotted maiden on, sending her cloven hooves through the mouth of the cave slowly. She tilted her crowned head up slightly, carefully inspecting the cervices and canyons of the cave. The maiden paused at the mirror, a legendary item she had only ever seen in passing, and never had she had the opportunity to be at such an intimate length from it. It's glassy exterior hinted it's reflectivity, but of course, her stars and her features wouldn't stare back at her from this particular mirror.

Her bonded sniffed absentmindedly at it, tilting his rune encrusted, antlered head up to the maiden with an underwhelmed expression. The star cradled mare ignored his apathy, brushing her leonine tail behind her to delicately brush his side. Yes, that was it, and she assured him the mirror held more secrets than either of them would be able to figure out in their lifetimes.

Oh, but she was the one chosen to decipher what she could from the mirror. Although she doubted she would ever know the extent of the mirrors capabilities, she would do her best to know it well.

He hadn’t spoke to her.

For all her absence, for all her singular escapades, it was clear to the dark colt that she didn’t need his speech or company. And, so, he treated his sister with silence (though the two still slept in their dam’s cave, and thus were in each other’s company). And they wandered in each other’s company.

Though, despite on half of the whole remaining silent, the couple was anything but. Kiada rambled on and on, doggedly ignoring his silence and speaking enough for the both of them. And the colt, growing fouler and fouler of temper, marched onward and forward, wandering almost blindly as he strived to prove his point by silently battling his sister’s babble.

He was more angry. So his silence would hold out.

Or, at least, that was how he saw things. Regardless, his black dipped legs walked and walked; he was glad for the coolness of the Basin as compared to the warmer southern climates during this season’s (‘Tallsun,’ mother had called it) long, hot days. His ears tilted back against his skull, attempting to block out any sound but the miffed rumble of his irked thoughts aimed at his sister. They were two parts to a whole, she was part of his life. And she kept leaving him for others.

And so it was this blinded annoyance that lead the stomping pair into the Haruspex’s cave. Mother had mentioned this place, though she hadn’t been forthcoming with information about it for some reason. He blinked rapidly, adjusting to the dimness of the cave compared to the bright midday light of outside.

And there was a mare with a cerndyr standing in it. He recognized her from the herd meeting—the woman had been appointed as new Haruspex (a stupidly hard word to say, he acknowledged to himself). And she was staring into some kind of hard expanse of flat, thin rock. Except it was reflective, like a calm water’s surface.

His lined face tilted, still resolutely giving Kia the silent treatment as he spoke only to the woman in front of them, “What is that? And why are you staring at it? His voice range loudly and clearly in the cave.

He had been ignoring her, and it was beyond frustrating for the little filly. She had tried to apologize, tried to explain that while she loved her brother, that he had an iron grip on her that prevented her from trying to explore the world. If they were supposed to grow up to be these beautiful monstrous monarchs that the demons within their hearts desired, that it would only make sense to work independently on some fronts. But she was sure he hadn’t understood. And so his silence came like a pessimistic child (which to be entirely honest that’s what it was) and she continued to give him the treatment back.

An eye for an eye.

And yet she still followed him, dark ebony dipped legs taking her alongside him, a bit of a ways away but still close. The mirror was stretching, but soon she was sure he’d come back to her just as she always returned to him in the night. Despite the escapades she had, she always returned to him and his embrace. Even if he thought she was so horrible for constantly leaving him, he was the one she returned to with her stories of her travels, eager to tell him everything they had seen. And with this feeling boring deep within her, the flames that licked along her back flickered as deer mixed with wolves. The fiery beasts ran across her back, aiming their powerful jaws to the deer – where curiosity and rage met, the wolf met the innocent deer.

Soon they were in the haruspex cave, her bright oceanic gaze drifting from her brother to glance back at her companion who had decided to extend his wings as his feathers grew in. He bounded the best he could alongside her – surely not as nimble yet as Kianzo’s cub. But nevertheless, Khairi was trying. Her attention was drawn back to the event at hand as Kianzo’s voice rumbled to the mare that Kiada recognized from the meeting. “Hello Miss Haroo… Harooosp… Haro pecks.” Her brows furrowed in frustration at not being able to say the word right, but she had at least tried. “That’s really neat!” She added in, the ebony tuft of her tail wiggling with delight. She pushed past Kianzo then, flames turning entirely into the simple deer like the Haruspex’s companion as she trudged her tiny bodice to the mirror eyeing it with wide eyes.

Altair noticed him first. The cerndyr's attention wasn't as captivated by the mirror as his bonded was (it was hers, after all). He flicked an ear back, softly grunting as a gangly, golden boy stepped into the cave, followed soon by a girl engulfed in flames. His eyes widened, brow furrowed, noting that the child acted normally, as if fire didn't burn.

The star swathed maiden took note of the visitors only after they spoke. She turned her head in surprise, brow raised and emeralds wide. Were these the children who lingered by Rexanna at the last herd meeting? She guessed it to be so, as Frost couldn't name any other in the herd with such vibrant, golden tones to pass onto their offspring.

Oh, but who could be the father? No one she knew in the herd was as fiery as these twins. The girl was the one on fire, but it was the boy whose words burned, so bold and brash compared to his sister's polite, excited lyrics. Frost smiled at the duo, stifling a laugh at the girl's attempts to say Haruspex. It worked for her.

"Hello," She offered as a greeting, dipping her diadem to the children. They weren't enamored by her, though. It seemed the children's thoughts were only on the mirror and what she could tell them of it. Oh, but the maiden was more than happy to oblige. It was her duty to do so.

Frost stepped aside, her companion lingering close, revealing the extent of its swirling, glassy surface, and beckoned the children closer with a wave of her leonine tail. "This is the Mirror of the Haruspex. It may be a mirror, but you'll never see your reflection in it. It shows me, and only me, what has been, what will be, and what the God of the Spark has to say about it," She spoke wondrously, hoping her words mystified the children as much the mirror did.

His ears laid back in annoyance with his sister as she attempted to say ‘Haruspex’; though he, himself, thought it to be an annoyance of a word, the verbal stuttering (which, on any other day would have been endearing) struck a chord of ire in him. An iirritated, sideways glance darted towards her, in time to see the flames morph from ravenous, feeding wolves to simple deer. A short snort left his small, dark nostrils; how quickly her attention shifted.

Is that how she left him so easily? Was she so quick to forget their meaning to each other?

His bright, blue gaze shifted from the grey cerndyr—whose attention was focused more on Kiada’s flames than his own, disgruntled self— to the seer, herself. Her horn was long, impressively so, and the color of her hide was a rich mahogany, making the white blanketing on her haunches leap out, even in the dimness of the cave.

His companion, in all her hyena-cub ferocity, paced slightly before the mirror, bright eyes darting from the deer (prey) to the mirror that reflected none. Her young body was too small to bring down the deer as a meal, so continual rolls of hunger growled through her bond with the dark prince.

Though Kianzo ignored her, instead his gaze followed the inviting flicks of the woman’s tail. Dark, knobby limbs carried him closer to her reflection-less mirror. At her mentions of its power, the annoyance that had lined his youthful face dropped away, ‘What will be’?” His deep, clear voice (for a foal) echoed her words, “Will it show you that, now?” Though he addressed the Haruspex, his darkly wondrous gaze did not leave the glassy, swirling surface.

A black-rimmed ear flicked sideways, listening for Kiada. Even through his annoyance, his body and mind were forever attuned to her, listening and feeling for his other half.

Hello.

She listened as the Haruspex dipped her head to the siblings. She plastered a smile onto her face, doing her best to contain her excitement until after Frost Fyre had spoken of what the mirror did. All Kiada could do was watch in amazement as she moved to the side, her body showing the mirror that didn’t reflect anything, but as the mare began to speak her curiosity was heightened. “Only you?” She began to whisper, ears flicking back toward Kianzo as he approached the mirror. His own caramel hues reaching her ears and she followed his steps, forgetting about the anger and frustration that had laced their relationship prior. She leaned into him, her eyes drifting from the mirror to Frost Fyre.

How do you talk to a God?” She asked, her tail wiggling in excitement as her gaze landed on the spotted mare. “Is he like us? Or do you have to have magic to talk to him?” She questioned, in a case of rapid fire curiosities. Her ebony head lowered to look to Kianzo, her other half, with wide excitement. Maybe today would be the day they got to meet the Gods, those that even from a young age, they strived to be. Ivory markings reflected the light among the dark confines of the cave as Khairi bounded up beside them, looking and leaning toward the hyena cub just as Kiada did to Kianzo. His raptor eyes danced around, learning of all the differences and changes that might occur if they were to summon a god. Kiada began to wonder what it would be like, as well. Would they be transported to a portal to speak with the gods? Or would he just magically appear before them in all his magical and mysterious glory? Perhaps Frost Fyre might have an answer, and so her gaze trailed back to the mirror and to the Haruspex in her innocent curiosities.
