She enjoyed the silence.
In the moments following her greeting, a new silence was born and filled the distance between their bodies. Fear and sorrow had left, perhaps to haunt another, and she felt safe, almost happy. The corners of her velvet lips pulled upwards just so and she tried to tip her face towards the stranger as she heard them stand, but she corrected herself still as his voice fell into the silence between them and gobbled it up. She felt him looming beside her, over her, and she quite liked the feeling.
The feeling of being small, of being consumed by another’s shadow.
His voice was comforting to her, and she enjoyed the way he spoke. She waited for him to finish, softly cherishing each word that he said. Her broken eyes stared past him, through him, but she smiled still and the curve of her lips made her words even sweeter. “My name is Ravel,” she breathed. She didn’t want to be a burden, but in that moment she enjoyed the company — fear and sorrow could never fill a void that deep (so deep!) — and she decided she wouldn’t go unless he asked her to, but that wouldn’t stop her from exchanging his apology with one of her own.
“I am sorry to disturb you, Alune...”
Her words trailed off and her smile grew, slowly so slowly, and only enough that one likely wouldn’t notice if they didn’t watch. Was he watching her, this Seer? Her mind was a loud place, then, full of questions for him. Such a curious title, she thought, and she longed to ask him about it, to ask him everything. She wanted to envelop herself in his words, to wear them like a cloak that would keep her safe, keep her comforted.
But instead she waited, hoping he would not turn her away, hoping that perhaps he would understand that for her the stale quiet of the forest was not the same as the savory quiet that so often grew in the lulls of a simple conversation.
