So intense was the filly’s focus on the bones that she did not see Gaucho’s approach. Her mind was buzzing, leafing through the images and knowledge of the birds she had observed so far here in the Throat and keeping an eye on this one. It wasn’t until some movement caught her attention that she finally clued in, but even then it was not in a simple ‘oh look I’m no longer alone’ way.

“Hale!!” The exclamation ripped from her small mouth as she startled from the sudden (to her) appearance of the flame-feathered bird before her. Vastra small down-covered wings flashed from her sides as she tried to keep herself upright when she stopped her pacing and stumbled backward into the sand, wondering if this bird had anything to do with the one on the ground, but her attention was grabbed again but another presence - this one considerably larger. Larger even than her mother! Her dark brown eyes widened in surprise as she took him in - from the antlers with the snake twined in his antlers, to the stripes on his shoulders, to the beautiful fire-bird that was with him.

He was more interesting than the bone creature, surely, but when he spoke it became clear that he was unfortunately not as quiet.

The question from the large creature earned a serious frown as Vastra scanned the skies around her. Clearly no rain was coming. “No.” She stated clearly before her dark eyes returned to the pile of bones for a long moment before suddenly being inspired by her company. She preferred to learn on her own but she would not chase away the chance to learn from someone else if it presented itself. So the frown cleared somewhat and she looked back up at him hopefully. “Do you know what type of bird?” These words were whispered as she motioned toward the bones, not daring to speak loudly lest it frighten off her quarry while she was distracted.
