what a skeletal wreck of man this is, translucent flesh and feeble bones...

Grusha had decided that perhaps her pop was right to be concerned about her running off on her own, so she decided to tell him where she intended to go and when she intended to be back. The previous night, before she'd snuggled up with Tae to go to sleep, she'd told him that she wanted to go to the Thistle Meadow for the day. She wanted to give Nashoba a chance to run around in the grass and play and hunt different animals than what the Dragon's Throat provided. And she'd told him that she planned to be back home around sunset. She was confident with her time-frame because it wasn't like she had to walk the whole way there and back. She could fly.

The sky was just beginning to lighten with the arrival of the sun when Grusha woke. She untangled herself from her sister, nudged her a bit to try to rouse her and told her where she was going. She wasn't sure if her twin was awake enough to comprehend, but she had no doubt that Tae would figure it out when she was fully awake. With Nashoba in tow, she set off toward the meadow. At seven months old Nashoba was still a pup, he was still light enough to ride on Grusha's back as she flew, though it was incredibly awkward. A few times he slipped and nearly fell to the ground, but managed to catch his balance just before he took the plunge. The skeleton child made a mental note that she needed to figure out some way to carry him without risking him falling to the ground.

Upon landing in the meadow Nashoba finally did take a tumble from Grusha's back. Her landing was not as smooth as Tae's were, she was not built for speed and agility like her twin was. Instead she was built for brute strength and force. When he hooves hit the ground Nashoba bounced into the air. In the brief time that he was airborne Grusha had already moved forward and when gravity finally took hold of him and he started to fall there was nothing but dirt and grass to catch him. He yelped and growled his displeasure at hitting the ground the way he did, but Grusha ignored him.

"Time to hunt." She informed her companion as she looked around the meadow. The wildlife was ripe for the picking and she didn't know where to start.

Gaucho was both impressed and pleased that Grusha had decided to let him know where it was she was planning on going. He had taken it as affirmation that she truly understood the intention behind his lecture a few days prior. Thus, the reason why he had followed her was not out of a desire to keep her safe, or a paternal need to see if she had been telling him the truth ( he knew that she was ), but to see what it was she was capable of.

So he had kept his distance (she had said where she was going after all, there was no need to stalk her), and kept himself out of sight. If this was going to turn out to be a meeting with a boy or some other secretive aspect of her life that she would likely rather keep private, he would afford her that privacy immediately. However as he glided high in the sky, what he saw was not some secretive rendezvous, but what looked like the beginning of a hunt. With interest, Gaucho flew in large wide circles over head, his steely gaze peering down below at the girl and her wolf.

Vorsa did not actively hunt for sport, but Mara did. The snake thoroughly enjoyed tracking and murdering her prey with precise accuracy. Why, if she was down there, she'd happily loop herself around the wolf's neck to help guide it along. But she wasn't down there, she was up here spinning in dizzying circles.

"She notice us soon." Gaucho murmured, casting his eyes downwards once again. "She smart. She notice and then we go down."

Grusha took her time to look around the meadow. All the wildlife, the potential prey knew that she and Nashoba were there in the meadow, but the girl didn't care. Prey that was aware only made the hunt more exciting, in her opinion. It made it harder and more worth while when they finally got what they were seeking. Nashoba, on the other hand, preferred to stalk his prey quietly and he preferred to have Mal and Hel with him. The three of them together could take down a small deer, while he alone was reduced to stalking rabbits and squirrels.

She was aware of her companions preference for stealthy hunting, and she was also aware of his preference for pack hunting. If Tae were there with her two companions the five of them would hunt together and likely take down one of the larger deer. The wolves would feast and the girls would  have bones to add to their growing collection. Unfortunately Tae was not around so they had to hunt alone.

Nashoba was not happy about it and he made his displeasure known to his bonded.

"Shut up." The girl snapped mentally at the wolf. "Either hunt or go hungry." Sometimes he really knew how to get on her nerves and the only thing that kept her from kicking him was knowing that hurting him would hurt her. In response Nashoba slunk off into the bushes and Grusha started to follow after him. A shadow passed over her that made her stop in her tracks, her ears falling back against her head. It was much too large a shadow to be a bird's, and when it passed over her again she looked up. Flying overhead, circling like a giant vulture, was her father. The girl snorted and stamped a hind hoof into the dirt. "I THEE YOU!" She yelled up at him.

Her voice wafted up, and despite the annoyed tone that he thought he heard in it, the dun smiled. Not take long at all he thought proudly, and allowed his massive body to tilt forward. The air immediately rushed up to meet him as he swiftly descended down towards the ground. His flaming wings adjusted themselves with pin-point precision to allow him an easy and graceful landing in the clearing.

The Wildfire eyed Nashoba through the trees then turned back to Grusha. She didn't appear to be carrying any more bones than she normally did, nor did he see any scattered about. Had he merely caught her early in her hunt? Or had she not been successful thus far? And where was Tae?

"No bones?" He asked with a smile, folding his fiery wings against his flanks. "Living or dead?" He added, meaning to inquire as to whether they were hunting life prey or looking for dead. Gaucho had come to assume that the girls called it hunting regardless of whether what they were hunting had a heart beat or not. And, given the twin's magic, he supposed that that likely didn't matter to them at all.

Vorsa hovered by Gaucho's shoulder, trilling a bright hello to Grusha. Mara on the other hand, slithered forward in Gaucho's antlers, her bright black eyes fixed on the skeletal girl. She too was wondering what it was they were hunting .. and whether or not she could do a better job of it than the girls' oaffish canine companion. She truly was a silent killer, and the venom in her jaws was all the evidence of that fact that she would need. Hunting squirrels? She'd easily rack up a higher body count.

Grusha stood still as stone as she watched her father's form fall toward the earth. Others might have backed away to give him room to land, but the girl didn't. She was mildly annoyed that he had followed her after she had told him where she was going. Did he think that she lied to him? Did he think she couldn't take care of herself? But she was also glad for the time spent with her father. She couldn't help but feel that maybe he followed her because he was taking what she had told him seriously. That she needed him as a father and not just a Sultan.

"No bones?"

"Not yet." Grusha answered. Any other time a not yet would be followed by a frown or some other look of disappointment, but she and Nashoba had only just arrived to the meadow. Their hunt hadn't even started yet.

"Living or dead."

"Nathoba wanth to hunt living becauthe he wanth to eat." The girl said. "I can uthe boneth when he'th done, after all the meat ith off of them, but it taketh time." She explained. "Dead thingth already have all the meat gone and are ready to uthe, but thumtimeth they're not in the betht thape." Which didn't really answer her father's question of what they were looking for. "Nathoba noth the betht hunter. He'th too young and thmall, but he trieth. Tho while he trieth to hunt I look for dead thingth."

She looked in the direction that Nashoba had slunk off in and frowned. "Mara hunt with Nathoba?" She asked, because she'd seen the snake hunt before. She had deadly precision that the wolf pup should witness for himself. "You and Vortha help me look for dead thingth?"

Gaucho listened, ignoring the irksome quality Grusha's voice had taken on. It was, after all, a daughter's job to be displeased when she sees her father lurking about, and it is a father's job to ignore the annoyance that his presence causes.

The struggle was real for his daughter, of that much he could tell. Either the hound would hunt living things thereby satisfying his hunger but delaying the actual availability of bones that Grusha could use, or they could find bones immediately, but which might be cracked or otherwise poor to use. Gaucho frowned with amusement and grunted.

Nathoba noth the betht hunter. He'th too young and thmall, but he trieth. Tho while he trieth to hunt I look for dead thingth "Efficient." Gaucho grunted approvingly. "Good leader."

At the mention of her name, Mara slithered swiftly from Gaucho's antlers, to his shoulder and then down his long legs. Her forked tongue pulsed towards Grusha - her own silent way of offering thanks - before her gun-steel body disappeared in the grass. She would find that wolf alright. Find him and teach him a thing or two.  Gaucho meanwhile grunted in response, and despite the fact that she didn't like to hunt very much, Vorsa trilled her agreement.

"Yes. We help," Gaucho readily agreed, turning his body to indicate that he would follow should Grusha wish to take the lead. "But Gaucho normally make things dead. Not find dead things. What we looking for?" His voice was genuine, for he really didn't know how to hunt for things which were already dead. Though he was pleased to give his daughter a chance to demonstrate all that she knew, and to teach him something that he didn't.

The snake seemed all too eager to leave Gaucho behind and go off to hunt with Nashoba. Grusha watched her as she disappeared into the brush. "Mara is coming to help you hunt." She told the wolf through their mental connection. She could feel a bit of reluctance from Nashoba, but it was soon replaced by hope that his hunt would be more fruitful.

"Good." Grusha said when Gaucho agreed to help her look for dead things. She nodded her head then turned away from him to survey the meadow. One of her ears flicked back in his direction as he spoke again, this time saying that he usually made things dead. Grusha liked to make things dead, too, but she much preferred to enjoy the thrill of the hunt with her sister.

"What we looking for?"

"Thumtimeth boneth are juth out in the open." She said. "Thothe uthually aren't very good. The thun maketh them brittle." She explained. "I look for boneth that are buried becauthe the ground protecth them and keepth them throng." She said. "Thumtimeth I find half eaten dead thingh."

She trotted forward, glancing back once to make sure that her father and his companion were following. "Me and Tae thaw a cat burying a dead thing with leaveth one time, tho I look for pileth of leaveth becauthe that meanth there might be thumthing under it." She glanced back again at her father. "Wolf packth leave boneth out in the open, but they're not alwayth the beth quality. Wolveth like to chew and crack boneth. Maketh them brittle and utheleth." She snorted as she searched for the telltale signs of something dead buried nearby.

The dun followed with an obediance that he rarely ever demonstrated. It was usually he who was doing the leader and instructing,  but Gaucho was not so arrogant that he wouldn't allow others a chance at the helm. If they knew what they were doing of course.

Which Grusha clearly did.

As the girl outlined how the sun could make the bones brittle, while moisture kept the bones solid (and not completely decomposed in certain instances), the Wildfire nodded appreciatively. He didn't interrupt, merely kept pace with her and kept one black ear trained on her at all times.

As Grusha continued, telling him how she had learned things about searching for bones based on her observation of a cat, Gaucho ended his silent streak and grunted his appreciation. "Smart." He mumbled under his breath. Gaucho hadn't been the most observant child. Strong, yes. Observant and clever? No. Clearly the tan twin had inherited that from her mother, or more likely, cultivated it herself.

"Look for signs bones hidden. Got it." As they walked, Gaucho would either use his wings to brush aside piles, or kick them with his hooves. However each time he was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Mara had caught up to Nashoba. She couldn't tell if he had waited for her or whether she was faster than he, but eventually they were side by side. Mara's gun-steel body slithered on the hard packed earth, disappearing easily beneath clumps of leaves and piles of grasses. Ahead, she spied a quail. Her black eyes narrowed and then turned towards the wolf. Silently she threatened to kill him if he made a sound. Despite the fact that the two couldn't communicate with words, she hoped that he would take her meaning: she opened her mouth revealing fangs dripping with venom. She would strike the quail and immobilize it, and then the wolf could break its neck with his jaws.

deal? Her black eyes seemed to say as she turned away from Nashoba towards the bird. Then, with lightning fast speed, she slithered forward and struck: her long body darted towards the bird and her teeth landed squarely in its plump chest.

what a skeletal wreck of man this is, translucent flesh and feeble bones...

Gaucho seemed to be taking in and understanding everything that Grusha said, which pleased the girl immensely. It was the times that he let her do the leading and the explaining that she truly felt he had confidence in her abilities. It made her proud and it made her eager to prove that everything she'd observed was correct. She had to find bones to show her father that she knew what she was doing and what she was talking about.

Deeper within the brush, Nashoba had waited for Mara to catch up with him after Grusha had told him the snake was coming. He didn't exactly trust the snake, but he was willing to let her help if it meant that he would get something to eat. Nashoba wasn't particularly interested in birds, he didn't care for the feathers so he didn't actively hunt them. When Mara turned to look at him he wanted to growl at her because he did not like the look she was giving him, but then she opened her mouth and showed off her fangs, which kept the pup silent. Fine, kill it. He thought dismissively, though he was eager to kill something, even if it was a bird. Mara struck and Nashoba was with her only seconds later, his jaws closing around the bird's neck, crushing its delicate bones.

Grusha paused in her search and looked in the direction of Nashoba and Mara. The wolf couldn't tell her what they had killed, but she could feel his excitement. "They killed thumthing." She said appreciateively before returning to her search. Every now and again her father would brush leaves away from piles, obviously taking what she had said to heart, but time and again revealed nothing.

"Wind maketh leaveth pile up and look like thumthing ith buried" She said so he wouldn't get too disappointed at finding nothing. She didn't want him to be too discouraged.

She spied a pile of leaves against the trunk of a tree and she walked over to it. Grusha stopped next to the pile, her head tilting as she surveyed it. She lowered her head and sniffed at the leaves and, through it, she got the faintest scent of death. Excitement raced through her and the flesh began to peel away from her legs. She said nothing as she began to dig and with each swipe of her hoof her magic made it appwar as if more of her flesh was peeling away from her body.

"I found thumthing." She said, just in case Gaucho hadn't noticed that his daughter was turning into a skeleton. She continued to brush away the leaves eventually revealing the corpse of what appeared to be a deer. Ragged bits of flesh clung to its bones, but it was still a good specimine. It was better than many of the dead things she found in the Dragon's Throat.

Gaucho too had cocked an ear towards the snake and the canine. Through his bond he could also sense that they had been successful in their hunting, though if he and Grusha could have compared reactions, Gaucho would have said that Mara was a great deal more pleased with their find than Nashoba was.

Wind maketh leaveth pile up and look like thumthing ith buried Gaucho turned his attention back to his skeletal daughter, sticking his bottom lip out thoughtfully and nodding. That made sense, and given how many piles of leaves he had overturned he appreciated his daughter's explanation. He hadn't begun to doubt her, but her knowledge of even this small facet of finding bones made him even more confident in her bone-seeking abilities.

The Wildfire's eyes watched as Grusha began to move purposefully towards a tree. His ears perked forward and he smiled to himself as he body began to degrade right before his eyes. So many might think the magic that overtook her body when emotions ran high through her was odd, creepy even, but Gaucho did not. It would make her a formidable (and even more frightening) opponent on the battlefield, but even more importantly, it made her unique.

The dun made his way over to her once she had revealed the bones. He didn't think that there was any magic needed for this part, but just in case there was, he didn't approach until he was sure that she had found what she was looking for, and that his arrival wouldn't startle - or otherwise ruin - he

"Good size carcass." The Wildfire observed. "What Grusha make?"

"Good size carcass. What Grusha make?"

Grusha stood staring down at the pile of bones and flesh, on ae ear tilted on Gaucho's direction when he asked what she would make. Typically she wouldn't make anything with the newfound bones, she and Tae would relocate them to one of their hiding places so no one and nothing else would find them. She didn't want to move them while her father was with her, though. Even though she trusted Gaucho, as far as she was concerned, the hiding places were for her and Tae and their wolves' knowledge only.

The girl sighed and began to sort through the bones. The thought occurred to her that Gaucho probably expected her to craft some sort of items out of the bones, but she didn't particularly care for creating items. She much preferred to meld her magic with Tae's and create minions that were creepy and scary. She liked creating the actual walking dead with her twin. Still, Gaucho seemed as if he were interested in watching her create something, so she would do so for him.

She dug through the bones until she found what she was looking for, a bone that was long and straight and strong. It was devoid of the ragged bits of flesh that clung to some of the other bones, but that wasn't really the reason that Grusha had chosen it. She found that the leg bones tended to be far stronger than some of the other bones. They could stand up to being shaped where some others splintered and became brittle.

Grusha used her magic to lift the bone that she'd selected and she pictured in her mind what she wanted it to look like. The bone itself began to shake, parts of it began to crack and bits of it fell away. The bone marrow on the inside of the bone was revealed and she used her magic to scoop it out and leave the inside of the bone empty, completely hollow. When Grusha was finished the leg bone resembled a rough dagger. The tip of it was sharp enough to penetrage flesh easily enough and the sides were relatively sharp. She was sure that the hollow part of the bone would allow blood to flow freely from a wound if an individual was stabbed deeply enough.

The filly turned to her father and dropped the dagger at his hooves. "You can keep it if you want it." She said, otherwise she would give it to Tae. She was sure her sister wouldn't object to having a weapon to hunt with.

The dun watched, frozen with curiosity and pride as his daughter began to sculpt the bone into ... well, he wasn't actually sure at the moment. Had it been him, he would have left the marrow inside. Surely that aided with flexibility and strength? But ... as with most things on this hunt thus far, his child certainly seemed to know better than him. Silently he stared as a dagger was revealed within the sheath of bone. Gaucho exhaled his approval as it twirled in the air, held there by Grusha's incredible power and determination.

"Want." Gaucho grunted immediately. Vorsa, who had of course abstained from hunting with Mara and Nashoba, flitted downwards with her claws extended. She picked up the dagger off the loamy ground, and then flew up, landing in Gaucho's antlers. The phoenix trilled appreciatively to the large filly as she held onto the dagger, careful not to let her talons dig into the bone.

"Thank you." Gaucho rumbled, bobbing his already heavily bone-laden skull. The dagger would make a fine addition to his arsenal of weapons. And that it was crafted by his daughter would make it that much more special to him. He would keep it with him always.

With a sigh, Gaucho turned his steely gaze back towards the sky. Grusha had not invited him here - he had followed her. And now it was time to leave her to her own devices. She had told him where she had been going, but hadn't extended an invitation. The girl had born his arrival patiently enough - or with as much patience as he had come to expect from her - but he would leave her to her hunting now.

Come, Gaucho thought silently to Mara, who as it turned out, was already on her way. "Thank you for showing Gaucho how to hunt bones. Grusha very good. Gaucho go now. See Grusha home later."

The dun winked, knowing that his daughter would likely interpret home later so suit whatever time she decided to fly back to the sands. But he didn't mind. She could take care of herself, more or less. Grusha was strong, and for now, the dun wouldn't worry about her.

With a grunt and final nod, Gaucho retreated a few steps into the clearing. Flaming wings spread, he launched himself into the skies. Vorsa trilled brightly, still holding onto the dagger as if it was the most important object in the world.
