She watches the world slow down from where she stands. Time has stopped, stalled between now and the next day – it is neither comforting nor terrifying. Knowing that her reprieve rested in the threshold of the atmosphere above them, in the dark inky ocean, a sense of relief hovers above her. Except, as she tests her wings she discovers their sore and stiff status from the attachments to her chest. Ru exchanges a mournful chirp from her lungs, a puff of air in protest. Flight seems impossible for the meantime, and the thought is a jarring reminder of her weakness – the only tangible thing that appears to keep her grounded.

His voice ushers forwards, lifting her eyes back to the white face hovering from beyond. Ru found it odd to finally place a ‘sound’ to the creature, now that the spar had ended – if it could speak, and how. It was easier to think him as an object, an enemy – placing a personality and a being behind them, only seemed to complicate the delicate relationship between two strangers.

The youth’s face is blank, absorbing the lyrics that dance all around – head spinning as she attempts to piece together their purpose. Flicking her ears idly. And when she does, she finds his concern strange. Out of place in this dark and formidable cage of the Deep Forest. The youth tilts her head in question, eyes – previously glazed over, snap back into a bright and beaming light. With a rough grunt she shakes her head. An amused smile dances against her lips.

The expression loses its touch as the golem awakens. Bewilderment inhabits her gaze as the ‘thing’ comes to life, shedding a warm hue of rosy oranges and reds. For the most part it appears harmless to Ru, awkward and unaccustomed to its legs. It’s a delightful sight; witnessing what must be the stranger’s grasp on magic. A hidden world for which Ru knew very little about, though nonetheless amazed and curious to find. Too stiff and sore for the time being, the young mare is happy to stand where she is.

Once more the heavy voice breaks the silence, and she is drawn to the red eyes that inhabit the mask. Volterra. It isn’t a name she’s familiar with, but she supposes it’s worth the effort to remember – seeing as she might strike back one day to test her progress. But even then, the thought was thin and lofty. Would she continue on her path?

She had to.

It hurt, and it stung and it made her feel incapable of her goals. But at least it gave her something to work towards. At least it gave her some semblance of a meaning in this wide, and strange world that was Helovia. It would be worth all this suffering, wouldn’t it?

Ru shook her head, in an attempt to snap her focus back to the present. She could attempt to say her name, but then that would so clearly expose her damaged voice. She didn’t feel whole enough to admit to that fault in her biology. Instead, relying on the easiest solution she simply shook her head again. In some respects it was true – no one knew it, no one ever would. She’d tried explaining it once, but the results proved far too variable. Perhaps if the girl knew how to write, she could imprint her name against the earth, or sand – wherever, and it would be clear enough. But mother hadn’t the time; and she was long gone, into the uncertainty of the storm’s mouth many, many months ago.

Uncertain what he might try next, she diverted her focus to her collection of wounds. Shifting uneasily with a brief grimace, she dipped her head and rubbed the cut against her cheek on a forelimb. Pausing to gaze down at the old and crusted blood, suddenly aware of its presence – startled in a lazy, curious discovery.

@Volterra

- thanks again Snow for the teaching spar! Going to have to find ways of making those damages more realistic. But this was very helpful! :3 Lots to learn from, and hopefully the next one will be better. ;P
