One part of new herd life that the colossus has not been looking forward to is his Threshold duties. He has never attempted to recruit before; he has visited the Threshold a couple of times, but only out of curiosity. He has never had to try and flaunt his home to anybody before, and he has no idea whether it is going to be something he is capable of.

But he has to try. He owes it to Sikeax to bolster her numbers and be an active presence around the herd. It would reflect poorly on her if she was thought to have invited a useless man into the Throat's ranks; a brainless soldier, incapable of anything but mastery on the battlefield. Alas, this is not far from the truth. The giant is a capable warrior, but he is blissfully ignorant about what else is required from one of his rank. Recruitment, he assumes, is a pretty large part of it.

So, despite the searing heat that bids sweat to bead across each harsh contour of his colossal body, Volterra prowls through the Threshold with intent etched into every rugged muscle. The dragons are elsewhere, hunting on the plentiful forest prey, as they see it as below them to have to sell their home to the highest bidder. The stallion is alone in his quest, and he throws himself into the task with admirable gusto. He might be filled with reluctance, but it does not show as his massive skull swings side to side, hunting for potentials.

Finally he sees one; a unicorn mare, stood near the water. The goliath takes a moment to assess her, before deeming her worthy of his attentions and moving closer at an earth-shaking trot. "Greetings," comes the rumbling baritone, his stride slowing to a halt a short distance away from her. He fights aside his natural instincts - to flirt, to put the size of his harem before the size of his herd - and after a tiring mental battle, manages to force his face into neutrality. He racks his brains, trying to think what to say - should he lead with his name and rank, or ask hers, or remark on the weather? Ack, this is far harder than simply kicking something until it breaks! "Are you looking for a home?" His voice is assertive, despite the uncertainty that bubbles inside.

AND THE WORLD WILL END IN FIRE
