But no. This tree says hello, and makes various comments to all the horses that have gathered. And it might be just a bit snarky, actually. She can’t tell between all the smacking sounds the sap makes, but she likes the tree just a bit more if it’s actually being snarky. Good. So trees do have a sense of humor, perhaps.
It begins to talk more, about the creatures in the thicket and how they needed more food. Yea, well so did she, really. Half her home burned to a crisp. The critters here should probably count themselves lucky. How about someone collect food for her instead and let her hibernate through winter, warm and snuggly in some cave? Ah, but no, it doesn’t work that way really. She could just step on the squirrel and eat the meat if it really came to it, but the squirrel needed nuts it would never find once the snow started falling.
And no, she won’t actually step on the squirrel and eat it. Meat isn’t actually a horses thing. It’s just the point of the sentiment.
“Sure,” she says, because let’s face it, she wants the egg. And hell, she’s here anyway so she might as well. A few have already trundled off, coming back rather quick. Wasn’t the point to leave the thicket and find stuff outside of it? Cause the squirrels can probably get the close berries and nuts. But maybe they all went farther than she realized and just so happened to move faster than she does. Because she does not move that fast.
She saunters off, leaving the thicket behind until she finds a collection of pine trees. The cones hang obviously enough on the trees, but she has no way of getting to the cones. So instead, she searches the ground for the nuts that have already fallen, using a particularly large leaf to collect all the nuts. When she’s got a solid collection of nuts, and a few cones that happened to have fallen to the ground (she figures the squirrels will know how to get the nuts out of the buggers), she scoops the leaf up in her mouth as best she can and makes her way back. When she returns, she makes her way to the tree, depositing the leaf of nuts on the stump. The leaf unfurls vaguely like a plate. It’s not silver, but it should probably be a silver platter. Either way.
Hopefully the critters like pine nuts.
