The boy listened – not to the rumble of foals (though many of them looked eerily familiar; perhaps brothers and sisters of Kid and more offspring of Volterra) or the confusion surrounding their area – but to the strange tree as it cast aside riddles and foreign transcriptions. He nodded towards the maneuvering pillar (and thought nothing of a tree talking, because he’d seen giant turkeys who’d asked him to cook – this was just magic again, alive and at work). The notions and directions were clear, to gather, to scour the soil and bushes for respective seeds, nuts, and berries, and Erebos could almost feel Orsino’s disappointment. Perhaps the kitsune had been aching for danger, intrigue, and violence – but there was no corruption here, no damnation opening up and swallowing them all whole for their insatiable appetites or greed, and the kitsune was left to wallow in the given task. The youth remained silent throughout the measures, much more his father than his mother in the instant, focused entirely on what was to be done and how to do it. Had Rikyn, Aithniel, Adelric, Enna, or any of the others he’d known, cherished, been there, he may have sauntered beside them, laughed and cackled with merry delight at the thought of silly things. Instead, he administered a silent reverie, wandering amidst the dark leaves and the forbidden corridors, traipsing his way along tall columns and thick groves, Orsino grumbling all the way.
But Erebos wouldn’t complain, not when he had an opportunity to snatch, grasp, and clench something he craved.
The soldier dipped his head towards a patch of red berries, lipping at them lightly with his maw, and the sable fox followed suit, despite all of his complaints. No battles! he hissed along their connection, and the scion merely smiled, I’m sure this could be like a battle he launched in response, sending the beast simmering towards the next set of seeds fallen to the ground. He had an inclination to toss a berry at the cretin’s skull, but he had no intention of leaving it to waste after rebounding off of a thick cranium – who knew how the tree was measuring the assignment. They continued in their undertaking, keeping glinting, nefarious eyes on berries and beasts alike, before returning to the designated stumps and dropping their tiny parcels off along the wooden rings. Then they’d start all over again, hunting in more ways than one.
