Her breath left her in a squeak as the boney man’s cloven hind hoof solidly connected with her slender ribcage. A soft crack reverberated through her tiny, lemony body as a slim rib cracked. Her small body crumpled on the ground near her mother, as his accusing and venomous words lash out at her, defensive chides following quickly on its heels. Though his words fell on puny, pinned ears that were deaf to anything he had to say. But she did hear her mom’s howl of rage, and her squinted teal eyes looked up to see her pale, small but mighty mom sidle between herself and the hoof-happy bag’o’bones.
“I’m—ouch,” her reply to her mom’s question about her well being was interrupted by a particularly painful twinge from her right side; the broken rib was protesting against its use in speaking. But any attention that would have been pinned inward on her injury was immediately shifted towards the small dragon that was emerging from her mom’s egg as it let out an excited trill.
The small filly gingerly rose to her rose thorn hooves, but it was too much to actually move towards the small dragon. So, instead, she reached out towards it, ears tuliped forward, “What’re you—“ she painfully paused in her whisper, “—you gonna— name it?”
And then her teal eyes swept towards the man that had so forcefully kicked her, narrowing slightly, “What’d you—“ a pained, short intake of breath, “do that for?” And then, with her haunches leaning against the cave’s rough wall and her small jaw set, she waited for her answers.
