The Elephant King stood, tall and silent, watching the strange man that had called them. There was a part of him that wished to help the lone soldier—seeing some of himself in the overworked man that simply wanted companionship. But there was another part, a part that roiled in protest every time Kisamoa smiled those strange and mismatched teeth, that held him back along the dunes. From this vantage, he could better see what was occurring, despite his innate urging to join the many foals that mulled about in the gathering of bodies.

His navy gaze found many from his herd there—Tilney, Sacre, Erthe, Alune, Oizys (the troublemaker), Glasgow, Arakh, Esinakh. And those who no longer were apart of his family: Ultima. And Kvasir, who he had not seen in long months. Though, naturally, his eyes gaze came to rest on the only child of his present, Kiada, and her mother, Rexanna. Long limbs shifted forward, bringing him near the golden siren, but he still hung back—the thought of Thranduil’s warm eyes on her face fresh in his mind from the previous Kis encounter.

And, now, he was close enough to protect them, if he needed to. But he could still see the overall scene from his slightly displaced position. And so how low rumble called, “What sort of fun do you have in mind, Kis?” It was heard easily over the crash of waves, and there was warmth in both his tone and his face as he spoke. But his eyes were creased and withheld a wariness known well to fathers.

Mbwene beelined for the waves, splashing her trunk in the salty sea, entirely oblivious to any other creature for the moment.
