Her horned head snapped down to fearfully glare at the pinpoints of bright white sand that gleamed against her dark grey skin, before whipping back up to continue looking for her brother. They shouldn’t go swimming. They weren’t meant to swim. Though Esi often bathed in water, she rarely let her hooves leave the bottom. And this was salt water—it was dirty and left a film of grit across the body when dry. Not like the cleansing freshwater of her home in the Edge.
Her nostrils trembled as she searched, her panicked eyes missing more than they caught. So she had passed over brother-calf at least three times before her distressed gaze finally focused on him. “Rak!” was her scream above the wind and waves, but her terror constricted her throat and strangled the volume out of her voice. “RAK!” She tried to outstrip her fear with another scream, but it was futile.
So she hovered and tentetively took a step off of the Sandivy shrubs and into the dune’s deep sand. A shudder wracked her body as it touched the skin above her coronary band, forcing her to halt. “Rak,” her cry was a whisper, tears now springing from her eyes as she was help trapped away from her brother by her own fears.
