A particularly vindictive gust of wind sent a large sandivvy leaf flying up against her upper right forelimb, eliciting a terrified squeal and a jump from the filly. Her ears, one white and one black rimmed, pinned flush with her multi-colored, foal-fuzz mane; the whites of her already pale eyes now showing. Her jump had thrown sand up around her, and some stuck to the fear-sweat that had begun to slick her shoulders, chest, and flank.
But what worried the girl even more was that where the leaf had hit, it suddenly now itched. Where her knee (that had brushed a leaf on her walk to the dunes) had been uncomfortable, this was outright torture for the young calf. She bleated pitifully, clay now welling along her back and beginning to stream down her sides. “No,” was her quiet, choked whisper, “no again.” A tremble wracked her slender body as her wide eyes looked first to asylum from the sand (it was so far away, through so many dunes) and then looked for brother-calf.
