The sun was still on the rise when Aurelius stepped onto the Threshold, but it was already stinging. The tall trees here provided little relief, casting soothing shadows upon the sod below; all the while the sun was gathering strength from its throne in the sky. Aury sighed and shook his nape, trotting on relentlessly. With a naturally dense coat, he was meant for a much cooler climate, but he wasn’t one to complain. The dwarfen steed halted on a small inclination of the terrain, peering about with his mismatched eyes. Ears pricked forward to catch any sound of approaching souls, but he was once again disappointed. Truth be told, he had little idea of where he was headed, and he would very much appreciate a sort of guide who could give him a bit of a hint. Aury didn’t mind traveling alone, with his impressive set of horns, the predators seldom had the courage, but he wasn’t a great navigator. A long time ago, someone had told him something about the sun and the stars, and how you could use them to show the way, but it had long since skipped his memory.

Snorting, he flicked his silvery tail lazily to chase off a pair of cheeky bloodflies, once again pacing forward, this time at a slow stroll. The chocolate colored stag was well aware of the other dangers the forest may impose, but he hadn’t stumbled upon anyone of a malicious agenda just yet. Aury could talk his way out of anything either way; his lack of physical magnificence had resulted in a sharp mind and a golden tongue. It had gotten him out of many a jam through time, but then again, it was often that same tongue that had gotten him into trouble in the first place. The thought made him smirk; sometimes he really ought to keep his mouth shut. Striding up to a small pool, Aurelius dipped his nose greedily in the water. It tasted sour, like it had been still for too long, but he didn’t care. Sweat was soaking through his pelt and he needed to restore his reserves. Looking up, he realized there wasn’t much grass around, just some foreign foliage that he wasn’t sure if he should risk consuming. Getting caught alone out here with a poisoning would be a rather unfortunate turn of events. He decided to go hungry; maybe he could reduce a bit of his growing girth, making him more attractive to the fair maidens of this new land. Once again he smirked, deciding to stay in the shadow by the pool for a while, just to catch his breath, and see if someone would happen to find his way.

Another sun rise, another extreamly hot day. The heat alone had Solstice already sweating... Not to mention the dream she had the night before. With a snort the gold and cream mare set out for the Threshold. She had started to show up here more and more in the last few weeks. Somewhere deep inside, she hoped to find Ata wandering in finally... But at the same time she knew he was not coming back. If he was, surely he would of found his way back to her by now... With a shake of her head she shook away those thoughts as she entered the cover of the trees. Her painted frame was darkend greatly by sweat. Inside she cursed the God of the Sun. Her son had seen the God throw an almighty temper tantum before all this heat began.

It was times like these she was greatful that her mother had been an arabian and that she was built more like her. Her frame was more slender and easier to cool that of a draft horse. However her coat sometimes was much thicker, just like her body was thicker than a pure arabian. That only seemed to come in handy in the winter in the snow. Her cream colored forelock fell lightly over her hazel eyes. As she wandered in the forest, she listened for the sound of others. However she smelled a strange scent before she saw the stallion. He was quiet handsome. She moved closer, trying to stay among the shadows as it was to hot to simply stand in the sun. "Hello there newcomer. Found some shade in this terrible heat I see" She smiled polietly, learning from her last meeting with a stranger that sometimes it was better to leave some things like her name better unsaid at first.

Aurelius took time to glance around the area, slowly becoming familiar with the new lands. Truth be told, solitude had always bored him, he by far preferred some company. A rustling of leaves made him prick his ears expectantly, but he was disappointed as a doe stepped out from the forest. The creature sniffed around and nipped at some foliage, hadn’t spotted Aury in the shadows. It wasn’t exactly this kind of company he’d had in mind. Dozing off a bit, he leaned on the solid trunk of the tree next to him, yawning. This heat was making him awfully drowsy, so when the doe suddenly scrambled off, he jumped in surprise. What had scared it? At once he was fully awake, flaring his nostrils to try and catch a scent on the wind, anything that could hint to the approaching. Apart from the musky smells of the overheating forest, he caught a sweet perfume that caused a smile to creep upon his features. A belle, he thought to himself, and he wasn’t disappointed. Moments later, a striking golden femme came into his view, moving closer and greeting him. This day had just gotten a whole lot better.

Now, Aurelius had seldom been accused of being handsome. Where he had come from, he had been the bastard, he had been spit on and kicked at, but he had gotten used to it. His mother had been an equine who had a brief rendezvous with his sire, a unicorn herdleader. When she died giving birth to him, his father had taken him under his wing, much to the dismay of his true mate. The members of this new herd hadn’t been very appreciative of a halfblood, and even though they weren’t much larger than him, he had always been mocked for his stocky build. His mismatched eyes, his stunted legs, his coarse hair – he had plenty counting against him. But that was all in the past now. Aurelius stood up straight and nodded at the femme respectfully, voicing his greeting as well. "Hello to you, m’lady. I must admit the weather isn’t exactly becoming me, but I’m not one to complain," he said in a smooth voice, shifting his weight on his feet. "I believe introductions are in order. I’m Aurelius, son of Gerion, of the Amber Isles. I’m weary of travel and looking for a place to rest." A pleasant smile remained on his face, queer eyes fixated on the stranger before him. She was a beauty, and he instantly became curious about her. Hopefully, some of his questions were about to be answered.

Mauja the FrostHeart
ice cold man watches earth die, eternal winter takes its reign

Mauja sometimes took spontaneous walks, in which his means of navigating were restricted to "follow your horn". Following your horn made for an impulsive and often straight path, but perhaps not as straight as you might think - if something caught his attention to the side, he looked in its direction, and suddenly the direction of his horn had changed. It was an excellent means of enjoying yourself and exercising both body and mind. Thoughts turned at different speed when walking, and the clarity that often eluded him when he stood still struck him when he moved. It was not surprising, though; horses were creatures of movement. Movement meant life. Mauja enjoyed being alive, both physically and mentally.

Sometimes he envied the Foothills their proximity to the Threshold, but at most times he found the walk pleasant and rewarding. Curious things happened on the way, he got to flaunt his pale hide at strangers, but most of all, he wasn't a stranger himself. The more he moved about, the more would know of him, and he could see little bad coming from that. After all, what was a King if no one knew his name and his realm? And so it was with a smile, despite the sweltering heat that darkened his coat and hammered in his head, that Mauja the FrostHeart followed the scent of a mare and a stallion. He knew neither, and figured the mare was an equine, possibly something else though. She smelled heavily of the Foothills, and that made her an enemy, but nothing of the sort was written on his face when he swept into view, towering and regal.

"Mauja the FrostHeart, King of World's Edge," he interjected smoothly, ears still swiveling to the aftermath of Aurelius' voice. "We'd best do something about the weather, don't you think?" The question was aimed at both of them, for he had not simply ignored her; hornless as she was, he didn't care for offending the other herds and turning them against him. Let them play their game of hugging and loving, and let him mass shadows when they weren't looking. His blue eyes blinked, a small smile on his face; Mauja's head tilted slightly as he came to a stop in the shadows, tail flickering against his hocks. Here, where the sun didn't touch him, it was harder to see the fine mesh of frost across his horn and hooves, but it was there. Briefly he peered down at his own feet, before looking up at the ram-horned unicorn again. Perhaps he should send an ice spike into their midst. It might chill them off before it melted. Then again... he guessed it could be a bit..startling.

She smiled sweetly as the smaller unicorn stallion spoke. He seemed quiet nice, much like a gentleman. Solstice spoke gently "I am Solstice, daughter of Gideon the WarHeart from Isilme... Now of the Windtossed Foothills. Welcome to Helovia." She shifted, ears flickering back at the sound of more hoofbeats Can't I ever talk to a traveler alone? Her hazel eyes took in the stallion, another unicorn who smelled of a land unknown to her. She assumed he must be from World's Edge, the all unicorn herd. She shifted to make sure her back was not turned to the stallion. Aurelius she trusted, this new stallion she did not....

He spoke quickly as he arrived, annoucing himself as Mauja the FrostHeart of World's Edge. Solstice however showed no concern for his arrival answering simply to his question. "Pleasure to meet you sir. Indeed we must." She may be cautious of him, but that didn't mean she couldn't still be curtious. Looking back to Aurelius she spoke again "There are three herds within Helovia. The Windtossed Foothills who accept all races, The World's Edge who are unicorns only, and the Dragon's Throat who accept all.... Last I heard they had been taken over by a Pegasus band." She wanted to pay a visit to the Throat, see if anyone from Isilme had made it there. Then again with this heat, the last place she wanted to explore was a desert.

Aurelius was a hardy creature, strong for his size, but by now he was certain that he couldn’t point out one body part that wasn’t aching. With his relatively short legs, the travel had taken him much longer than one of regular size, and the heat made his joint swell slightly. Now wasn’t the time to show weakness, however, not while standing in front of a female. As he was about to reply to her introduction, he was interrupted by the arrival of yet another stranger. His left ear flicked back and forth a couple of times at the sight of the massive, ivory steed. This stallion towered well above him, but that wasn’t going to intimidate Aury. Something about him seemed peculiar; the drawven stag couldn’t point out what it was. He introduced himself as king, and Aurelius nodded his head respectfully, but nothing more than what he had offered Solstice upon her arrival. So he was a king, that didn’t mean much to Aury – he had no idea if he was the only one in this land holding that title, or if every other hessian with his head in the clouds could pronounce himself king of something something.

Aurelius counted himself a gentleman, so naturally he took time to respond to Solstice before returning to the newcomer. "Thank you for welcoming me, Lady Solstice," he said politely. Turning to the white brute, he raised his crown to look him in the eye. "Your highness, a pleasure," Aurelius spoke, simply nodding at Mauja’s notion about the weather. He could only agree the thought of a blizzard seemed eerily attractive right now. The slick smile on Mauja’s face made Aury ponder about his intentions, but then again he was always suspicious of stranger stallions. He didn’t know either of these horses, but he felt a certain distance between them, certainly they weren’t warmhearted in their interaction. As Solstice started speaking, he pricked his ears towards her, listening and trying to absorb the information in his weary mind. The names didn’t tell him much, be it of the souls who dwelled there or the climate in which it was located, so he decided to investigate further. "Tell me Lady Solstice, who rules The Windtossed Foothills? I would love to hear more," he said gently. He needed more information in order to make a decision.

Looking back to Mauja, he fell quiet for a moment. He wasn’t sure if an all-unicorn herd was what he wished to go through again, considering how rotten his former dwelling had been, but here they didn’t know his history. They didn’t know of his heritage, that his mother was an equine and that he was a bastard. "I would appreciate to learn about The World’s End as well, Lord Mauja." He sensed he would have to use his cunning around this one, but he also saw opportunities in joining the white stag. Time would have to tell which he would choose to follow.

Mauja the FrostHeart
ice cold man watches earth die, eternal winter takes its reign

Strange, how she shifted the instant he made himself known as an intruder upon their conversation - was she simply being courteous and wanted to include him, or did she want to be able to see him? A flippant thought ran unchecked through his head, Of course she would, I don't look bad, now, do I?, but it never showed upon his curious blue eyes or left his mouth. Mauja wasn't really the type to be vain. Nor was he the type who could read minds, so he guessed he'd never figure out why she'd shifted upon his arrival. It didn't really matter, either, for if a Foothills mare would, unprovoked, attack the Edge King... Well, he guessed Gossamer would be less than pleased. Not that he was going to give her a reason to attack anyway. He was, after all, not a maniac.

They were both equally pleasant of manners, but that Aurelius responded to Solstice first did not escape him. There were, to Mauja, three reasons; being a gentleman, the fact that Solstice was there first, or, Goddess forbid, to slight poor Mauja. He didn't care to ask which, but returned the short stallion's gaze with a steadfast one of his own. The newcomer might be a pony, but the horns upon his head made him desirable to the Edge herd, and who knew what tricks a sturdy pony might pull on a larger opponent in battle? If he was the fighter type at all... Maybe he was one of those prancing daisy-pickers of the Foothills? "Pleasure's mine," he echoed, looking briefly at both of them to let them know he meant both, and not just one. And then, the usual talk of herds and Helovia began. A brief annoyance sparked in his chest when this hornless mare presumed to speak of his own home, but he quenched it and forced the pleasant expression to remain on his face.

Then Aurelius asked about the lady's homeland, and Mauja sighed inwardly, but just a few seconds later he asked about World's Edge - or, as he put it, World's End. The FrostHeart gave him a quick smile, but allowed the mare to tell of her own home first. As she spoke, Mauja leaned against the nearby tree, pressing his shoulder against it. It wasn't a bored expression or stance, but simply a relaxing one, for at least one ear was always alert and in the direction of the speaker. Once she was done, he nodded a little to himself before speaking of his own home. "It's true that the Edge accepts unicorns only," he began, thinking about the Order of the Sun and his temporary measure - now removed, that the Order had fallen, but the Sun was still burning their land... "Though, we are on peaceful terms with the other herds." So don't believe we sit at the Edge and drink tea and refuse to acknowledge others. Wish I could, though. "The Edge is located to the west, on high ground. There's a thick forest and good grazing, but don't walk off the Edge and fall into the ocean. It's quite the long drop." Mauja winked. Unicorns fell if they walked off the Edge. Damn Pegasus didn't.

Solstice

Palomino Tobanio Paint | 6 Years Old | Equine | 15.2hh

Solstice listened and watched as the two stallions spoke. Aurelius seemed to be a perfect gentleman... However she found her gaze glancing wearily over to the tall white stallion who made it known that he was a king. King of World's Edge none the less. Sure he seemed pleasent enough, but lets face facts here. All unicorn herd against a herd who accepted all who were accepting of others. When Aurelius asked them of thier homes, she was allowed to go first. "The Windtossed Foothill is a beautiful land with plenty of rolling hills. We are simply a herd that is a safe haven for all and where all races are treated equal. There are three leaders of the herd, Gossamer the Benevolet, Indy the Rightous and Smoke the WildRose. Lady Smoke leads the warriors such as myself, working with us to protect the herd from danger. Lady Gossamer and Sir Indy handle the more diplomatic side of the herd along with the scholars." Here she paused, letting it all sink in before she spoke again "In all you could say we are a herd based on the simple fact that all races are equal. Those that can not or refuse to treat the all herd members as equals are asked to find a home else where."

Sure it sounded harsh, but after going through the loss of Isilme the way most had.... None were to eager to see the same fate befall Helovia. The lives Isilme had claimed were price enough in Sols's eyes, as her beloved seemed to be among those the lands evil shades had claimed. Her ears listened as the stallion spoke after her. His answer was much simpler than her own. She remained quiet, still smiling gently awaiting Aurelius to speak.

Looking into Mauja’s eyes, Aurelius felt his sixth sense kicking. He would have to deal his cards carefully in this situation, it seemed. The short stag listened in silence while the two took turns in speaking, using the opportunity to make a more thorough assessment of both of them. Solstice was sincere, she spoke of her home with love; it was a talk of tolerance and diversity. Aurelius could see himself there; his own mother had been an equine and the only creature that had ever loved him. Maybe in time they would learn to look past even his slight size and respect him for who he was. The idea was appealing; his sentimental streak was proving itself a constant danger. The fae seemed wary of the pale steed – perhaps she had her reasons, Aurelius couldn’t know. Mauja’s words were fewer, his stance relaxed. There was a certain air of authority on him, which was hard to deny. Aury wasn’t sure how he would react, should he choose to turn him down; he could possibly piss off a whole lot of people. He had, after all, been approached by a king, which certainly wasn’t an everyday occurrence. Still, the little man felt no intimidation. He could look that white beast in the eyes without trembling.

Aurelius realized that as the others had finished their speeches, it was very much up to him to seal the deal. His gut would be put to a test now, as he had little else to rely on. Words were only words, often leagues from reality, as his personal experience had taught him. If he played everything right, he could have influence beyond his wildest imagination. Clearing his throat, he smiled pleasantly as he addressed the golden femme in a light tone. "M’lady Solstice, your description of the Foothills has been enjoyable. You must understand that I have many things to take into account," he paused, glancing at Mauja’s with a promise in those odd eyes of his. "I would much enjoy visiting you at another time. For now, I will have to turn down the offer in favor of The Edge. I hope you will understand and that we can part at pleasant terms," he said in his sleek voice. Oh what a born diplomat. Turning to his new king, he nodded respectfully. "That is, if you would still have me, m’lord?" He had no desire to stay in these godforsaken woods for another moment and hoped to have a swift departure. Travel had worn him down to the bone; he would surely stumble upon his new herdmates along the way.

Mauja the FrostHeart
ice cold man watches earth die, eternal winter takes its reign

All in all, it was a rather queer meeting - a mare who kept eying her sideways as if he was about to transform into a tiger and eat her any second, and a stallion that looked in his eyes and seemed to find him more and more interesting each time their gazes met. More bemused than concerned by their different reactions to him he allowed the scene to unfold, pale tail flicking idly by his hocks. Solstice had a true passion for her home, and he respected that - sort of. Passion was something that always intrigued and inspired him, sadly, what she was passionate about was a thing he could not allow to last. One day, he'd come to her Foothills and tear them from the grasp of the filthy, and perhaps only with a twinge of remorse at the loss of their passion would he watch it. Mauja had a cold heart, but until the day came when he was ready to crush them, he'd enjoy what he could of their company. Most didn't have much to offer him.

It seemed that his easy grace had done the trick; Aurelius' speech was laid out to placate Solstice but at the same time he realized where the true power lay. The King inclined his head ever so slightly, still amused by the situation. Aurelius was an interesting fellow indeed, if he cared so much for parting on good terms with a mere equine. Of course, Mauja knew that it wasn't good to brand yourself a racist, but the stallion actually seemed sincere. "Of course, Aurelius. I'd not dream of turning down such an asset." And that, too, was sincere. He had a smooth tongue, a quick mind, and most of all, Mauja couldn't get enough of looking at him. The King himself was a tall and regal animal, graceful by virtue of his bloodlines, but Aurelius? He was short, fuzzy, stocky, with ram horns and mismatched eyes. What was he, truly? Apart from short, that is. It seemed that a smaller skull did not mean a lesser intellect. He flicked his frosty gaze onto Solstice, gracing her with a warm smile. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Solstice. May your travels be safe."

With that, he turned around, facing west again. "Come Aurelius, let's go home." And then, he started to lead his newest member to the safety of his haven, wishing for the damnable sun to go hide its fiery face someplace dark.

Aurelius nodded respectfully at Solstice for one last time, following up next to his new king, finally exiting the Threshold to make himself a real home.
