Now that it wasn’t dangerous, now that he could control the shifting and was in command of the warg’s mind when he did, Mesec was curious about the form he could take. Curious enough that one day, while his kids were playing, he found a sunny clearing in the Edge’s forest and shifted. Right there, right in the sunlight, like it was no big deal.

But, of course, it was a big deal. It was still incredibly painful though the pain was getting easier to manage now that emotional trauma was not directly linked to what was happening, now that he did not have to fear blacking out and waking up with blood splattered across his body.

The setting was peaceful but this time, and he feared every time, when he shifted the fight with Zero echoed in his mind as he snorted and eventually growled through the agony - now both physical and mental.

He had no good memories while using this magic, while being in this form, and although he did not believe today would fix everything he still wanted to try it. Could he stand to stay like this?

When he flexed his silver claws into the soil, he remembered when they tore into his friend’s flesh. When he took a step, he remembered hunting down his friend through the dawn woods. When he inhaled, he remembered the scent of blood…

His breathing became laboured as he panicked and fought the onslaught of memories. He tried to focus instead on the mid-afternoon light that was shining brightly on him now, warm and a welcome change from the chill of the shadows in this season.

In the end, he didn’t appear to be ready to do anything in his warg form so he simply lowered himself to the grass - pushing out all four of his legs so his silver belly was flat against the ground. Not daring to close his eyes, he tilted his head upward and focused on the light on the fir trees at the edge of the clearing, at the branch where Lucius was perched and eyeing him with a haughty air and making jokes about how he looked ridiculous the way he was lying.

Ridiculous was good, ridiculous was safe. Mesec could use a little ridiculous in this form.
