Why was it always the beach?
Why always the sand? And why did brother calf always have to bound into the middle of the action—why couldn’t they stay safe? Though, after the last encounter on the beach and after washing herself with Arakh in the sea, she had found the small amount of grit on her skin…nearly bearable. Only a small amount. And only below her fetlocks.
But, despite this small realization, she still held firmly atop the dunes like last time. And, despite brother shouldering up alongside a small, red-bay other foal (and the acute longing that pierced her slender, grey chest to join the others), she stood atop the leaves of Sandivvy plants. This time, she pinned their itchy hairs down to the sand. She was learning, and pride puffed out her thin chest.
Pale, but not (yet) scared, eyes swept the beach. Her white-rimmed ear perked forward as she caught the glimmer of crystals on the beach—she wondered if she could find some of the same size and shape. She could make something beautifully symmetric and shiny with her magic, if she could! She would cover all the ugly, dirty grey clay with gleaming, smooth, uniform glass—the filly blinked dreamily as her tail twitched in excitement.
She opened her mouth the bleat for Rak—but stopped herself. She could wait until after, and she would send Rak to get her some glass. But, for now, she would wait until he came back to her on the dunes.
