the elephant king

His question about the birds received an answer—though not a verbal one, he noted. A head-shake; no, she did not speak to birds. Though she did speak as one. His thick, black lips pressed together in thought as the young, feathered mare gave him yet another chirp, this time confirming the musing conclusion he had asked aloud.

She couldn’t speak—at least, not with words. Now, the Elephant’s brows raised further on his face, eyes creased with surprise as they meet the woman’s bright teal—which are burning with thoughts and defiance. As if her silence is a challenge. A slight frown marred the King’s brow as he studied her for a moment, thinking.

The mare was young, not long into adulthood as told by her lanky legs and slender crest. So she had not lived a life of silence yet; there were still many years for her to grasp, wrestle with, and live. And, by the bright burn of her teal eyes, it seemed (to the King) that this strange woman would be one to do just that.

So it was not pity or empathy that colored his low timbre as he spoke again, but encouraged factual information, “The gods here, they may be able to help gain a voice, if you would like it, …” his voice trailed off as he went to use her name and realized he did not, in fact, know it. Nor would he. A slight, humorless grin curved up one side of his dark muzzle, “I cannot speak in chirps, so will call you…Unyoya. It means ‘feather,’ in my native language,” his navy eyes searched her questioningly, waiting for an approving (or disapproving) chirp.
