The boy was never shy, not like now – where he’d found familiar, vague faces gathering beyond the sea of bodies. They follow into an area open and large enough for their youthful souls to congregate. But he hesitates, he clings to the closest bush or tree that lends its space. The only one he seems to recognize is the earth colored colt, bedazzled with gold markings, and wicked blue feathering.

Does he strike the nerve to join them?

He holds his breath, their voices mumble as he peers on from the periphery. “Gosh…” Saoirse can catch the small, sparkling currents that run along Iskra’s feathering. It did little to prepare the boy of the other colt’s magical abilities. Not only the blue one, but the other colts also possessed some sort of inherent ability to do amazing, fiery things.

What if I’m not cool enough?

He’s never harboured these thoughts before, foreign, bright and scathing. Is this what mother wants? A boy who can claim some sort of element, hold the world in the palm of his wing?

Saoirse isn’t quite sure what he should do now. Run away, find some other foals to tag along? But as he glances about the now thinning crowd, he cannot fathom the idea of interjecting himself anywhere else.

With a frustrated sigh, he marches towards the trio just as Matheo takes off.

“Oi! Can… Can I help or something like that?” He sounded less terrifying than he’d hoped.

Picking up his pace, he hoped that it wasn’t too late.

“Hey, sparks – can I come too?” He looked to Iskra.

His tail swished excitedly behind him.
