Take just what I came for

Erebos wandered in the midst of misfortunes because it was easier and simpler. He didn’t have to think, he didn’t have to grovel, he didn’t have to beg, he didn’t have to do anything other than stare into the valleys below and wonder when they’d pull him apart too. Pausing allowed his mind to wander, to slink down into the rows of scythes and rapiers, into the dastardly wake of nothingness, to contemplate what he was supposed to be doing without his father – and then he’d walk again. Time whittled and carved against his chest, and his legs would carry him far beyond the mountains, down into the dregs and ruins of another world, across the vast Steppe, along the ice, the snow, the winter palisade, and he’d contemplate dropping to his knees, staying there, in constant mourning for all the things he should’ve said, all the things he should’ve done, for all the moments he let fester and wither, die away. Had Orsino, nosy, wily, and conniving, not seen the crowd beginning to loom further ahead, dwelling outside the innards of a nearby cave, the boy might’ve done just that – wallowed and drowned in the weight of his own heartache.

His eyes lifted from the ground at Orsino’s call, the feral growl coiling through their connection, gaze flickering from one form to another; some familiar, some unknown, and he dropped his head again, made to cast himself aside, back out into the cold grounds. But the fox, irked, irritated, chomping at the avaricious longings scalding, burning, between both of them, simmered and seethed, blindly tore into their bond with ferocity. Isn’t this what you wanted?

The prince could hardly respond. He didn’t know what he wanted anymore.

Egg! An egg! the kitsune kept shouting, like a riotous din, subversive and seditious, toying with revolution in his lungs, and Erebos barely moved, gazing at the wild winds and the promises layered inside the walls of the cavern. The fox wanted to maul him, to slash, to rip and tear, to destroy whatever wanted to destroy the General, but it was all from within, and he couldn’t do anything more than sling another weapon into their upheaval.

The Reaper wouldn’t have wanted this. The blow was calculated, and the vile beast watched as Erebos flinched, struck, stuck amongst the beckoning claws and the infernal sadness clustered within his heart.

But he knew, he knew, deep down in the rusted contortions of his bleeding, little soul, that his father would’ve shaken his head, turned his blue stare solely upon his son, and nodded for him to go.

You will be better.

Haunted and mutinous, the two entered the confines, staring deeply at the shadows, at the figures, at the Yeti looming over all of them, and dipped his head in greetings. He didn’t have anything else to do, to say, to try until they’d been announced the necessary services – he’d done this before, so many times before – and he attempted not to shake, attempted not to weep, attempted to do anything else other than blindly sob into the aperture. On a bolder touch, he stared into the eyes of beasts and monsters, of poised eggs with potential encased inside, of all the other essences who wanted the same object – all audacious, all fervent, all eager and ready, while he drowned in the merciless waves of his own damned misery. He carried his head like a regal being, like a son of a King, but couldn’t remember what it meant.
