Tonight the sky looks more inhabitable than the earth, and the copper child who wanders beneath wishes she could throw herself into it, step off the snow-lit steppe and disappear into the swirling sky, the tumultuous green and ribbons of blue that make up the aurora borealis. The lines that mark heaven and earth are blurred here, in the frigid earth, and not for the first time the lonely mare finds herself questioning them, unable to separate the incorporeal from mass.

Perhaps this line has always been unclear to Tandavi, though- has she ever known where she ended, ever had clear-cut edges that defined her as her, alone, something greater than the sum of experiences and failures? Her title, the Firedancer, is a tie to the Throat; her lineage, daughter of Rishima, is a shackle to the Edge. Even her body, moon-slashed and fire-orange, holds her to the gods she both worships and fears. She senses those around her and becomes them, reflects them, their magic falling like stones into her soul, their individuality ultimately defining her own. Every step, every crusade, every desire she has ever had- it has been for someone else. She is defined by the brushstrokes of others upon her experiences, by the spaces they take within her heart, by the howling abysses left in their wake.

The shape of Natraj takes the biggest space.

She has come here without him, for though returning to the Edge has made things better, the distance between the siblings still remains vast. Firedancer invites him, but the boy refused - afraid, not unreasonably, that his sister will simply wander away and take him with her, once more pulling him from a world he knows and enjoys. So instead it is he who forsakes her, curses her to wander alone.

Which she does, right into what may be her newest mistake.

The splotchy outlines of others mars her illusion of an endless, seamless world; they make the horizon obvious, grounded as they are on this plane of existence. Like a fall leaf caught in the wrong season the vibrant mare floats their way, her body a collection of fire and light, her dark eyes cautious as she bends and moves. She creeps closer on legs of gold, neither first or last, but quite capable of understanding the purpose of this assembly, now that she is close. A great creature stands among the horses, obviously different, obviously in possession of something- for why else would they all be here? Firedancer suspects egg, not magic, and though her first instinct is to turn away, an idea strikes her like lightning, and she pauses.

Maybe, the copper child thinks, This is what we need.

So she strides closer, excited now, the embers dancing along her back enthusiastic and bright. She seeks no individual out, for they are not important to her now - only Natraj, and the idea of fixing what she has broken. Maybe, if they have another, someone else to call family...

Maybe then they can be together again, for they will not be alone.
