Take just what I came for

The boy General went to great lengths to preserve his regal features, leaving them placid and composed while he cringed inwardly, disappointed that their gift hadn’t been treasured or favored (it seared, felt, like humiliation). He knew the notion couldn’t bode well. He’d been in the situation before, looked, glanced over, found wanting or barely there, unnoticed, not chosen – and though he’d been consecrated and anointed, blessed, in the past, to not be rewarded or honored by a monster left him reeling.

So when they turned, away from the spewing entrails of the half-eaten fish, he swore to give it more care this time, to try harder (because that’s all he’d ever done, determined, a portion of rock and rubble that refused to give in even when it seemed the most suitable course), obliging Orsino’s feral rumbles and growls, savage hisses and sibilance. They searched, a pair of mutinous, seditious maligners, craving something soft for the head of a cretin in a vast, endless plain of desolation and ruin. What was dulcet and soothing, assuaging and balming, in a renegade land of eternal snow and cavernous destruction? It was all hollowed, not hallowed – he’d yet to find anything holy along these incredulous walls of ice (murder, the shape of his friend’s bodies dead, staining the chilling, ivory precipice in nothing but red, sure, but he couldn’t recall anything light or gentle in the world of desecration).

While he searched along the plains of the timberline, Orsino scorched his way through the underbrush, sneaking amidst shadows and ferns, laying low beneath the patchwork, just as steadfast (but never as gallant) as his comrade. He gave out a vicious chirp (here, come here), demanding and commanding through their connection, when he found what he’d been looking for. No sooner had the youth emerged, following over the wake of the treacherous summons, did he see the nestled bounty Orsino had been seeking – moss. The thick patches of flowerless plant life had woven itself like a canvas on the backside of several boulders, reaching towards shadows, untouched, untethered, no roots securing its hold. Like greedy, avaricious cretins, they indulged themselves in tugging the moss away from its secure, cold home, gathering enough for a large yeti’s head, and perhaps then some, and flying back to the chosen cave with their wares.

The presentation was simple again, dropping the greenery at the yeti’s feet so that it looked like soft carpet, pushing them together in a bounty of soft exterior, piling them on top of one another to cushion the hardened portions of the solid floor – and he tried not to pray once more (because often his hopes weren’t enough – it was his methods, his motives, his machinations that had to be worth something). “Moss should make a fine pillow.” He grinned, he smiled, and he backed away again, holding his restlessness together by a searing knot, a fleeting tether.
