Early morning breaks with a clear sky. The feathered creature omits a growing grin to press into her features, as she runs for the Edge’s cliff side and lunges. Fully, whole-heartedly committed to the freefall, and the shift of her innards as she plays chicken with the crashing waves below.

The moment she punches out her wings, she looses her breath from the air that escapes her lungs. Strangled for a brief few seconds, before the pressures level, and the woman inhales hungrily for the air. Tucking her limbs to avoid the water’s drag on her hooves. Swerving as the cool waves splash, and tickle her belly.

“…aaaAAAHHHHRRRR!” Is her mighty yell! Before it breaks and fragments, and it is caught between husky and disjointed laughs that either dip too low or too high into squeaks.

Ru shakes off Springtime’s hum buzz, the reawakening of life to embrace the celebration and live it in the canopies beyond. Flaring her wings, she turns and heads south, wondering just how late or early she’d be for the patrol.

Regardless it didn’t necessarily bother the mare. And all the worries, all the hopes and dreams coalescing in purgatory erase their poison from her eyes. She feels renewed and bolstered by the breezes that bring her back to the Riptide Isles. The giants and their stony features welcome her – albeit, perhaps with a roll of their shaggy shoulders, and an annoyed puff of sea mist at their beards.

Ru keeps her elevation high above. Her eyes search for other pegasi who may have made the trip. For a while now she hasn’t spotted any others on the clear skies. So she idles, and mentally thumbs the edges of each broken island, and outlines their displaced bodies across the ruins.

Like an ember I fall.
Live to burn and fade away.
The Riptide Isles. A place that Darwin had only been too once, just after Antaa was born. In his desperate search to try and find meals for her while she was still a tiny fiery chick, he came across Aquila – a strange, yet intriguing mare that he’d end up staying in the same herd as. That didn’t last, however, and like most things life moved on. Antaa was fully grown now, quite the chatty companion as well, as time went on. Her fascination with Edgar was relevant since almost everything she had to say revolved around the icy zephyr. The thoughts always made Darwin chuckle, especially the fact that he had a fascination with Elsa.

Regardless of that, he was set to patrol this land. And that’s what Antaa and him planned on doing. Upon arrival, Darwin approached the same spot he had the first time he came, gesturing to Antaa with his bearded head as if to ask her if she remembered. When she chirped in agreement, nestled comfortably along his back, he nodded before spreading his wings and preparing himself to take to the skies. A shadow passed briefly above them and Antaa’s attention sprung on the pegasi immediately. The two were curious, wondering if this mare was from the Edge or someone simply passing by. At least they could ask!

It wasn’t long before both Antaa and Darwin took to the skies. His large pale wings pulling him through the air toward the feathered woman. Antaa sprung ahead of him, leaving a small trail of flames behind while Darwin tried to catch up. “HEY!” He called out to her, hoping she might slow down enough for the man to catch up. He wasn’t agile, much. Thanks to the strange heritage that was found in the make-up of his genes. “Are you from the Edge?” He called out again after her, flapping his wings the best he could to speed up his process while Antaa’s golden gaze lingered on the woman in front of her.

"Talk."

The Riptide Isles were not unfamiliar to the painted mare, but it had been some time since she had last visited the strange land.  Iona felt little affinity for the lands that had been the site of the battles with the Rift gods.  The Specter wasn’t much for Gods and politics, and these lands were seeped in them.  She had had her doubts during the original battles with the strange gods from these lands, and now they had Kaos to contend with - a subsequent side effect that no one had foreseen.  Even the Gods.  She wondered if this land had shown any evidence of Kaos.  Had he been lurking here, beneath their hooves, unseen in land that had been stolen from the Rift?

Iona was suspicious of everything now, more so than usual.  She wondered what signs had been missed. What signs were still being missed.  That’s why she’d wanted to come here - to one of the Riftian lands that had birthed the very creature that now kept her awake at night.

She shook away the thoughts of Kaos and the Rift as she pushed her wings to carry her higher and faster, cutting through the clouds with a well-practiced ease.  If anything ever made the painted mare feel better, it was the feeling of the wind in her face and the clouds dancing between her feathers.  She let out a soft sigh, relishing in the soft burn of her muscles.  She had flown the length of the Edge’s borders before departing southwards, so she predicted she’d be on the tail end of the patrol.  She kept a wary eye on the lands where she knew Kaos to lurk, but she did not deviate from her course, pushing herself further towards the islands she had seen birthed from the seas not so long ago.

She could see the Islands growing on the horizon below, but her gaze was instead drawn two two shapes above the Isles. Thankfully, she recognized them both.  Iona quickened her pace, catching the pair with relative ease.  Speed had always been one of her greatest assets - passed to her by blood and perfected by years of practice.  She slowed as she neared Darwin, who seemed to be laboring to catch up to Feather.  Iona fought to suppress a smile. "Darwin! Feather!" Iona called to the pair, confirming that they were, indeed, the group assigned to this land.

“What do you say we fly a lap around the Islands, then maybe see if anything is visible from the ground?”  Iona called over the sound of her own wingbeats.

it's who's going to stop me."

The young warrior is finally drawn to the noise of an unfamiliar voice – a stranger, accompanied by a peculiar bird. She projects a quiet coo to herself, before adjusting her wings. Expanding them, embracing the rough air to pull back. Enough that she slows and swings beside the stranger with a fair distance between them. Releasing a whistle between her teeth. Slightly envious of the fire that trails, and flutters out from each extended feather.

“Are you from the Edge?”

A confident smile breaks between her lips. Unrestrained, emboldened. Nodding once with an expanded, feathery frill of her crested head.

Another figure pursues them from behind, swerving beside Darwin’s other side. Ru tracks the body, recognizing Iona as she finally matches their speed. And greets her with a bright and brief whinny.

Forgotten warmth threatens to embrace her heart, as they form a group. Warmth that fills her breast with an old ache, one that reminds the girl of the miles and travels of her forgotten family spent in these eternal skies. She forces her eyes to take in the stranger’s features – Darwin, and his flighted friend. She nods to him, as Iona speaks once more. The girl’s eyes settling on the fiery phoenix, her smile softening as she wondered what its name was, and why it followed along.

But they were obviously here for more important things, than childish wonder. She flaps just slightly ahead to make out the black and white mare. And nods with a rather low, rumbling tone to mark her approval.

While Kaos was certainly a startling figure, unpredictable, unmatched as of yet – Ru was beginning to feel the need to deflect all and any worries, or fear. For the sake of preparing herself and her home wholly at the task at hand - of enjoying every second of her new life – because it seemed so much more precious than it had before she stepped into Helovia.

Inhaling the sea-scented air, she pulsed her wings to elevate herself just a little before banking left. Cooing after them in a means to follow, intending to make a wider radius to their lap, and therefore, a more inclusive circle.

Darwin and Antaa continued to push their wings further, trying to catch up to the woman until his words reached her over the wind. The mare then slowed down slightly, and Darwin came up beside the feathered woman with a smile gracing his lips as she confidently grinned in response to being from the Edge. They weren’t alone for long, as another from the Edge appeared. Iona, a mare he had only met briefly who held the rank of Specter had joined the small gathering. Both he and Antaa turned their heads to greet the painted woman, Darwin offering a slight dip of his head and a hello while Antaa trilled a greeting similar to Ru’s own whinny.

What do you say we fly a lap around the Islands, then maybe see if anything is visible from the ground?” Iona’s voice was heard over his beating wings and the slight crackle from Antaa’s flames. He nodded to her, his pale mane flying and tangling in the wind as he continued to beat his wings. “Sounds like a plan to me. Antaa can get lower and be another set of eyes.” He added in while Ru began to take a larger lap, he pulled his wings in tightly to slip into the interior while Antaa began her descent to see if anything of importance lingered beyond.

They couldn’t miss anything, at this point. Not while Ru took the outer circumference, Darwin taking the inner circle, Iona doing her thing too, and Antaa taking a close up view. If anything was lurking, hiding in the shadows, Darwin was sure they’d be able to spot it.
